  1. Hi Bonnie,

DId you ever say how much cheddar fabric you needed to make the quilt you are doing? I would like to make a cheddar quilt also and just wanted to make sure I purchase enough cheddar fabric.

Will there be a mystery quilt this year?

  3. Oh Bonnie you are a lifesaver tonight! I have 8, 10yr old boys spending the night tonight and they are driving me up the wall. I am so nervous, I could almost cry. LOL! So I've grabbed the laptop, headed upstairs to my sewing room couch so that I can watch you and I've left my hubby downstairs to fend for himself! LOL!

  4. I agree Bonnie. I like the mystery of where I am going next with a quilt.

  5. Can's stay and watch. Husband has decided we need to go walking. When we get back I'll be 'deboning' the shirts I bought today that the thrift store. I've got enough now that I can make 10 more blocks on my quilt and go borderless.

  7. First time on your quilt cam. Yes, I don't like being bored, so I have many that I work on for a while and eventually they all get done. I love your ideas.

  8. Hi Bonnie - we are watching from the Farmstead Inn in Shipshewana - wish you were here for the retreat this year - there's a Roll, Roll, Cotton Bole on one wall and an Orca Bay across the room!

  9. I too took at nap this afternoon. It was raining here so perfect to do just that. Just finished adjusting the tension on my old Singer 206 after having her cleaned and oiled. Working on a simple drawstring bag to wrap a Christmas gift in for my dear mother who is also a quilter. I like to wrap her gifts in fabric that way she gets two gifts in one and I am not wasting money on paper that gets thrown away. :) We are celebrating Christmas early so Mom and Dad can head to Florida for the winter next weekend.

  10. Hi Bonnie,
We're getting the heavy rain you got last night. How big will the bow tie quilt end up when it's finished?

  11. I see nothing wrong with buying a few macnines,,,some people do shoes, some do bags, with less than 30 machines, you have a lot of catching up to do!

  12. Did you ever count the total of your Bow Ties? I have over 400 now and still am deciding how to put them all together. I could sort them while I watch Quiltcam.

  16. Hey Bonnie!
I'm tuning in for the first time tonight and I love it! I'm currently working on a quilt and I noticed some really bad OCD when it comes to matching colors. It's really hard for me to piece fabrics with non coordinating colors. I love, that you just go for it and the mismatched fabrics of yours ook great! :)

  20. What do you attribute your high energy level to? I am JUST watching tonight with NO excuses! It is just my 11yo son and I here tonight (the other kids and Daddy at a lock-in for church!), and I'm just loving rest! I wish I felt quilty, but I feel guilty!

  22. Hi Bonnie, what thread do you like for piecing? Hi from Leeanne in New Zealand!

  23. I buy 1/2 yard more than pattern says.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Always give myself at least 1/2 yd extra. If the fabric is one that I fall in love with and know that I will use it again and again then I will buy at least 2 yds extra. Stash is a good thing!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Definitely add a little extra yardage in your mystery quilt measurements. Leftovers are never a bad thing!

  26. I like the yardage for a pattern to be relatively accurate, and then I can add a cushion for error or shrinkage.

  27. Hi Bonnie!
Finished deconstructing the UFO I tried to deconstruct yesterday, earlier this afternoon, and am reconstructing it with you tonight. Used your favorite tool, the "Easy Angle" to trim everything down to a smaller size, and re checked my seam allowance and am just breezing right along. Loving how it is going together. Had a friend offer me 2 sewing machines if I will come and pick them up. He describes one as "an old basic ugly thing from the 60's", and the other as "an antique like the ones that you used a foot pedal for, only its electric". Thought of you as soon as he started speaking. Cant wait to go get them and see what they are. Thanks for QuiltCam! I am actually getting some stuff accomplished for a change!

  28. Hey Bonnie, Just wanted to let you know I tried your method of linking everything together so you can just join the rows together in the end and it works well. I had to remember to start at the top to get the right order but I will be doing it more often now that I have figured it out. Thanks for the tips and tricks.

  29. Bonnie - you are a "bad" influence. Today I found (And bought) an old Anker Machine. Runs nicely. Zig Zag, feed dog drop, even an extra bobbin case. But I can find out very little about it. Happy sewing. Thanks for all you share

  30. If it is my focus fabric, I may go up to 1/3 yd more. Can always make something else with it. If it is some small area 1/4 yd over. Better more than midnight run to who knows where. Walmart doesn't have fabric anymore. LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  31. how do you keep the foot pedal from trqveling out of range

    ReplyDelete
  32. No left over fabric? I don't understand that concept! At the very least, I would want one or two strips extra for good measure, 1/4 to 1/2 yard extra is better!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Seems to me that you prefer 9 " blocks for the center of the block. Small but mot too small. I was use to 12.5 in blocks. I think I like the 9.5 better. More room to play but more work.

  34. I usually buy an extra yard or two, as a smudge factor when I'm working on a quilt. Yea I don't cut to straight at times.. lol..
besides I need the extra fabric for other quilts.. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like to add 20cm which would be a quarter yard in your measurements. I'd post the fabric requirements are exact and tell people to add extra if they want to themselves.

I use a free Robert Kaufman app on my phone to figure what fabric I need. It's also lets you put the size of fabric you have into the calculator and then it will tell you how many pieces you can cut from it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Always like the extra quarter yard. It saves you if there are any oops on my part when I cut. Sometimes the fabric store has a bad (crooked) end that costs you yardage too.

  37. Hi Bonnie. Jane here in Liberty Lake Washington. Just got home from work after a crazy week. Loving that I can tune in for quilt cam. Going to work on hand quilting while you're sewing your bow ties tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like at least 1/4 yd. extra when I buy a specific fabric for a quilt but I like scraps!!! So I don't buy much yardage anymore, Bonnie--not since I took a Bonnie class last March!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I always buy extra fabric. I am more concerned about not having enough than having some leftover. I buy at least 1/2 yard, sometimes more, depends on where I am using it.
I am hoping to have some time tomorrow to kit up some spool blocks.

  47. You explained webbing to us last night and it was the greatest tip you could have shared as far as I'm concerned. This morning I sew a bunch of 2 in half-square triangles, then put them all together in a diamond pattern to make a small doll quilt. It was so easy to put together using the webbing technique. Thanks for sharing!

  49. Hi Bonnie, I answer to your question about yardage, I always like to get at least 1/4 yard extra. If I don't need the extra, I can always use it in a future project. I'm really looking foward to the new Mystery! Cindy In SC

  50. Do you have duplicates or did you go for just making one of each?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh since I just joined, have to say I love the cheddar.
Have to tell you about my new find. I just found a Feather weight for a small price. Am excited to start piecing.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Love the quilt hanging behind you, I have my copy of the magazine marked as I plan to make it later this winter. I notice that you do not press your rows before stitching the blocks together after linking them. Do you find this makes a difference? I have always been told to press between attaching pieces in rows and attaching rows.
I have tons of scraps and am trying to organize my strips like you so that I can use them, instead of looking at the drawers and saying "I need to organize them so I can use them."

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi Bonnie, I am busy cutting 2 inch squares from my scrap basket while you are sewing. Great way to pass the time and listen to all the comments.

  54. Hi Bonnie
I did the Orca quilt last year (in pinks and purples. I followed your suggestion of making as many units as I could each week and at the reveal I had enough to make a large lap quilt but I still continue to make units as I want this beautiful quilt for our bed :-). So many projects on the go, AND I will finish it - but not before I start your new mystery. Thank you, thank you.
P.S - a hot 35 degrees C (95F) here almost midday. A good day to stay inside inn Air-con and quilt.

  66. Okay, I have a question for you about using multiple machines. I recently got to use my featherweight for a week while my main machine was in the shop. As you undoubtably know well, all sewing machine feet are not the same.

How do you keep your seam allowance consistent as you move from machine to machine? Or do you do each project all the way through on the same machine? What about when you travel?

    ReplyDelete
  67. Bonnie, do you suppose Dave is missing you while he's gone and is watching you on webcam tonight??:)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I had the same experience with the manual blade sharpener that you did: not very good. I have had a better result by paying the extra for the titanium blades. They last at least three times as long as the "standard" steel ones.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Dont care for any of the sharpeners, but Alto Cutters have the best blades, last for a long time.

  70. Hello all, I was late joining in this, we had to go out of town to an appt, and didn't get back until late. I said looks like I'll be late to watch quilt cam, and hubby says Why didn't you set it to record? (What he knows about computers will fit in this dot.! Carol, in Arkansas

    1. Bonnie, I didn't intend to sound mean, just makes me laugh when he asks questions about the computer, he says he asks so he can learn about it, but never tries it, hard to get him to even come and look at something. But his addiction is to TV (politics!) Guess it's OK for me to be a sewing, old machines, and computer addict! And probably why we were late getting back was because I went to Joanne's and Hancock's since we went to Fayetteville, where they are located (closest to us) I had some coupons and needed stuff! Then comes Home Depot for the last stop - he builds things while I sew things. 'Night, Carol

  73. Hi Bonnie, Thanks for having quiltcam tonight. I really needed the extra motivation. A friend challenged me to a very intricate applique project with tiny pieces. I want to hand applique it so am preparing the pieces using the starch method. I worked much longer with your company than I would have by myself. Have a great night.
