Here’s a shot at one corner where I’ve moved my Davis Treadle and have it displayed with a doll quilt from the mid 1800’s – yes---it’s hexies!
Refolding and reorganizing the stash cabinets is both a daunting and comforting task. I’m petting old friends! ((Something one should never say in mixed company unless you are surrounded by Quilters!)) And then wondering why I didn’t use them yet – how long have I had this fabric anyway?
The one thing I am doing a bit different this time around is pulling all the pieces that are big enough for backings and am going to put them in one place together, instead of separating them by color. I’ve sorted pieces that are 1/2 yard into smaller stacks.
Goodness, this is a lot of fabric!
Neutrals and Pinks are next to the FQ drawers.
Blues and Reds!
That’s it so far. I’ve got to run some errands this afternoon –including getting my hair trimmed, so I’ll be out and about for a bit and then back at it this afternoon.
For anyone asking – I bought these cabinets about 12 years ago when we were still living in Texas. They came from Home Depot –in a flat box. You have to assemble them yourself, or get your DH or son to do it :c) I don’t know if they still sell them, but I’ve loved them. I’m sure there is something else similar out there ----I know Ikea has great cabinets for storage that you can assemble fairly easily as well.
The one thing that I keep reminding myself is “It’s not good enough just to have space to store it – you need to USE IT!”
Oh, I’ll be making Happy Scrappy quilts for a good long time!
As far as QuiltCam goes – yes --- I think tonight will work! Look for me about 9pm Eastern!
How fun to have a nice new clean and organized quilting studio. And a true sense of what is in your stash. I expect it will inspire you to create more wonderful things.....
ReplyDeleteYour *scraps* look so inviting! Use them? YES!
ReplyDeleteIf there's power tonight I'll be sewing HST units to put as a first border on an UFO that I recently unearthed; it was started in 1999! Quiltcam will be just the needed *company* to prod me on. :>)

Is it Halloween yet? :-) Counting the seconds until Yardage requirements for the new mystery! I --- can't --- WAIT! :-)
ReplyDeleteSorry, I should have also said, loving your new carpet squares, and your STASH ! Yum! Is it Halloween yet?
ReplyDeleteSuch a tease you are with just a hint of quilts on top of the red/blue cabinet!! Sue K
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fabric shoppe!
ReplyDeleteWe bought some very similar cabinets at Home Depot a few years ago, too. I use them with the doors off for easier access to my fabric stash and sewing supplies. Makes me want to sew just looking at your fabric! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteall my fab. is in plastic containers, good and bad. I have to open to see just what is inside.but its dust free. there is never a fix all. Everything looks so nice and neat. see you tonight.
ReplyDeleteYour cabinets look fantastic, all clean and neat. I have exactly the same cabinet in my house, it's used to store bowls, pans, pan lids and miscellaneous other kitchen items. That's because my 1920's bungalow doesn't have much of a kitchen, there's no built-in countertops or base cabinets, all we have are two wall cabinets. Last summer my husband and I had to go to IKEA to buy a kitchen island to use as a countertop--we had only an old kitchen table to fix meals on, and it fell apart. I have not seen these cabinets at HD lately, but maybe you could take a photo of one and take the photo in to HD and ask someone about the cabinets.
ReplyDeleteIt is really coming together, you are going to enjoy everything in its place, makes life so much easier.
ReplyDeleteI got my cabinets like that from Target and I think Shopko sells them too. They are widely available though some stores only sell the wood-grain version. After I bought mine I headed over to Menard's and bought the proper depth shelving as close to the right length as I could find and then trimmed them to fit so I would have a couple more shelves in each one. That way the fabric doesn't have to be piled so high. The little plastic supports I found weren't exactly the same but they worked!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job. I have cabinets like yours and I got mine at Lowe's. I just love them you can really get alot of fabric in them and they are very sturdy.
ReplyDeleteGot some of those cabinets to use in basement storaage (got them about 8 yrs ago). They are perfect for lots of things!! Fun to get re-acquainted with those older friends. I also pulled out my bigger back size pieces last year, and I've started piecing some backs also to help use some of my stash. Looks like it's coming along nicely!!
ReplyDeleteLooks good. When you get done you can come to my house. I need organization badly. I ordered a sew adjus table this morning. Told the lady that you recommended it. She watches quilt cam too. Have my hand quilting ready for quilt cam tonight. Need to go through magazines and fabric also. Waiting patiently for Wednesday for the mystery quilt info. My Orca bay is ready to be quilted.
ReplyDeleteYour quilting area is coming along beautifully! One could hardly call it a basement anymore! ;-)
ReplyDeleteYummy stash! Love those cabinets. I have stackable drawers, which are ok, but I have to remove the drawers when pulling fabrics for a quilt. Love the carpeting!
ReplyDeleteIs there such a thing as "Stash Envy"??? LOL! I have so many Multi-colored prints that I have a really hard time putting them in one colorway or another--any hints??? Also, I have lotsa fat quarters--whyohwhy didn't I just get one yard....oh well..waitin' for the winds which are rampin' up from 40 mph now....sigh Julierose
ReplyDeleteWow! Lookin' good Bonnie! How deep are those cabinets? Is there a second pile behind what we can see? or is it just deep enough for the one visible pile?
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! A few weeks ago i got into my scraps and cut them all into strips, squares etc. i also realized that there were quite a few large pieces and had the same thought you did...put them together for backings, regardless of color. I am sew enjoying your basement renovation!
ReplyDeleteSuch a goreous stash! I started to feel jealous and then thought again...I would be overwhelmed! It is best that it is in your hands because you will definitely put it to good use. It will take awhile but you are a fast worker :-) Enjoy it! The new basement look is really coming together. Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI have those same cabinets from Home Depot - love them! DH bought them for me about 6 years ago and I've filled two of them to the brim with gorgeous yardage. I did have to do a clean out and destash about 2 months ago so I could keep the yardage stash to these 2 cabinets. I gave away over 90 yards to a local quilt ministry. They put out so many quilts for those in need in the community, certainly more than I could ever do. And the fabric is getting used - I knew these were pieces I would never use. It was a win-win for sure!
ReplyDeleteWe have cupboards like that here too... I have a couple with doors and one without doors. They are very handy. OMGosh you have a lot of fabric!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's looking good. I love seeing other people's stashes.
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous of all the room you have girlfriend.... keep it up!! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteha, ha, I just told my husband this morning that I was going to quite quilting when I use up all my fabric. He laughed!!! Can you imagine??? Of course he only knows about the fabric that is in the closet ;-) Not the ones in the plastic bins upstairs and in the laundry room shelves. I don't have any under the beds anymore, not since getting my wire basket system from IKEA. But, yes it will keep me busy for a few years.
ReplyDeleteI have a large wicker basket with my "future" backings in it! I just have to remember to check there when the time comes and not just start piecing a back or worse - run to the LQS and get an extra wide one!
ReplyDeleteEvery body else already knows, but how do u fold your fabric so neatly? I have read about comic book cardboard(?) to fold it around. What do u recommend ? Your stash looks beautiful ! I am not OCD, but piles like this make me feel so content. I find I have gotten neater since I started quilting. Funny, huh?
ReplyDeleteBonnie uses the same thing I do, her 4x9 rectangular ruler. As long as you leave an end open to slide it out.. lol..
DeleteI have the same fabric storage cabinets that you do (Got them at Home Depot about 12-13 years ago as well). I'm planning on stapling felt to the front of them for a design wall. I recently moved them to a different wall and have yet to get my fabric refolded. I wish I could work as fast as you! You inspire me and tire me out at the same time...lol!
ReplyDeleteSo fun to see your progress! I think I'll work on my fabric folding today...maybe during quilt cam tonight if not before!
Looking into covering my basement and was wondering how you decided on carpet tiles over regular carpet? Audrey
ReplyDeleteYour quilting studio is coming along g
ReplyDeleteCorrection..Your quilting studio is coming along great.See a lot of happy quilting time coming up....Woohoo
ReplyDeleteI would keep a close watch on the antique quilt on the wooden sewing table. There may be some damage from the wood oils staining the quilt back over time. it sure is a beauty.

ReplyDeleteYay Bonnie!!!! You win!!! I have cabinets but I still have empty shelves. Phew you made me feel so much better!!
Love your blog, love quilt cam.
Deb
I bought six of the same white cabinets at Big Lots a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteI use my 8 1/2 x 24 " ruler to fold fabric. Same size as a cardboard bolt.
ReplyDeleteI use my 8 1/2" by 24" ruler to fold fabric up on.
