From Mineola to Athens, TX!

20141026_124014
Athens, TX was the antique shop hop that WASN’T!

But as my fortune cookie says ---It is a happy talent to know how to play ((In Quilting is always added on my fortune cookies, how about yours?!)) and we were playing our way to San Antonio.

All of the shops we wanted to hit were closed on Mondays – but it couldn’t be helped.  We couldn’t hang around until Tuesday to see them!

However, Texas is known for its stately courthouse squares with beautiful courthouses and Athens did not disappoint!

The Athens residents also get to enjoy the hard work of someone who went all out to decorate the court house square for the season!

festive pumpkins, gourds and scarecrows!

On all four corners of the square!

The Henderson County Court House!

The Henderson county courthouse is large and stately, surrounded by lovely green lawns and monuments.

Awesome street sculpture from antique trike!

Anthens was good for a leg stretch and a wander even though the shops were rolled up tight.  We headed on toward Corsicana from here!

We were on a mission to stop where we could, when we could and a few places along our route did have some quilty goodness for us to see:

Appliqued 1930s butterflies!

What a great stylized shape!

Lovely old churn dash, late 1800s.

20141027_101056-001

Loved the fan quilting on this one – the front  has been brought around to the back and hand stitched down as binding!

1950s churn dash on a bench!

Oh this one!

We have got to unfold this one!

20141027_101640-001

Ocean waves!

This is a 1930s quilt, and I love how they have done each X with two fabrics ---instead of the scrambled scrappy layout that we usually see.  And that ORANGE!  Oh yes, please!

Close up.  How awesome!

Weird find of the day --- STEERING WHEELS!?

Just what everyone needs…in whatever color you want! Ha!

There was more to discover the next town over – which means there are more photos to come!

Irene and I had an errand day today.  I am down to the wire with only a few days left in the count down before we cruise!

Here we are at Retail Hell aka KOHL’s!

I really hate clothes shopping.  Shoe shopping is a torture of another kind and I was in a bind to find a pair of basic black dress shoes that can be worn with skirts, slacks, and dresses for this cruise coming up.  We survived, and shoes have been found, but am I the only one who would rather spend $60 on fabric or vintage sewing machines or antiques than dressy foot wear??

I guess it’s a necessary evil!

All I know is that shopping is so traumatic to my system and I was so worn out, that I crashed for a 2 hour nap when we got back to Irene’s house.

Dinner is on the stove, I’m sending this off, and we will be burning the midnight oil in the sewing studio when Irene’s daughter comes over after work!

I’ll be in my happy place again and shopping-trauma will be long behind us!

Have a great evening, everyone!

  1. I'm glad you survived shoe shopping without too much trauma. That orange ocean waves quilt is an eye-catcher. Love it! Enjoy your quilty evening.

  2. What is it with me and orange fabric lately? It seems to be the only thing I zone in on and want! Maybe it's because of fall and Halloween?? NAH... It just looks great with...EVERYTHING!

  3. I'm not fond of shopping of any kind and that's why I love Amazon and online fabric stores. :)

  4. Bonnie, I am right there with you on the shoe shopping. I don't like wearing shoes and do not enjoy shopping for them either. Thanks for the great quilt eye candy.

  5. Athens has a lovely quilt shop! Too bad you were there on a Monday! You'll have to go back! And I totally agree with the shoe shopping!

  6. I cannot tell you how I hate clothes and shoe shopping. What a waste of time and money. I'm with you, sistah!!

  7. That is SO weird!!! I detest both shoes and clothing shopping! If possibly affordable, I would have one of those personal shoppers do it for me. So you are completely understood Bonnie!

Gorgeous old quilts, wonderful for you to share them with us.

  8. I used to love shoe shopping. Now I have 2 pairs of dress shoes, one black, one brown. They just aren't pretty anymore. I'd rather spend money on fabric.

Love your thoughts on hand-quilting older tops. Now I won't feel guilty MQ some vintage ones I bought years ago. AND I can finally use them! I also hate clothes & shoe shopping. I don't care if I'm in style anymore or if anyone else is either. I like someone for who they are on the inside, not what they're wearing. Cathy D.

  10. only fabrics or books can make me turn around... 8^{
Most shopping is kind'a dash & dump style for me, I never change the shop where they have made me once happy.
Thank you so much for sharing the goodies in antique shops with us. I almost never go in, as at the counter bankruptcy is lurking behind me to jump in; good there is still no such shop in Witmarsum yet!
    Love from a hazy Friesland,
    Irene

  11. Am I the only one who misses the horns we had on those old steering wheels? No, I am not a bog horn-tooter, but sometimes you just need to give a quick, light toot to the person in front of you to let them know the light is green or to someone backing up to let them know you are behind them, etc...With the horns we have now (buried somewhere in the center of the steering wheel), by the time I have found the right spot to press (and you have to press hard) the moment of need has passed.

  12. I also don't like clothes shopping. My friends and family often pick me up clothes when they are shopping to keep me looking presentable. They have great eye for 'my style'. It is a great blessing and time saver for me. I would rather be sewing. Thanks for sharing all your adventures with us.

You were in San Antonio and didn't go to SAS Shoes!!!???!!! I have large and very, very wide feet and cannot buy a pair of shoes in most all shoe stores except at SAS Shoes. They have all sizes and the shoes are so, so comfortable and last a long, long time. I saw some really cute black dress pumps when I was there 2 weeks ago. Did I say SAS Shoes are very comfortable...they are the best!!! VT Quilter517

  15. I'm right there with you about shopping,(unless fabric is involved). I love the Churn Dash quilts from this post. Have a great cruise.

  16. I have enough fabric that I have no problem spending $60 for shoes that FIT and are comfortable. I even spent twice that last winter for boots that I wore everyday for 5 months and will wear this winter for as long as they hold together. My feet are worth it!! Like you I get exhausted and I resent that it is so much effort to buy clothes, etc. You implied you are ready for the cruise..... good work.

  17. I am catching up on my blog reading and the orange ocean wave quilt caught my eye. I looked at that pattern for a couple of years before I set out on a journey to use up my scraps on one. I finished my quilt a few months ago, looked at it for hours on end while making it and yet until I saw the orange one never did I see the X pattern. I love how color placement and choices really make and change the quilt.
