House Dreaming on Mackinac Island

Mackinac_May2014 2185
When these lovely homes were built, they were considered to be “Summer Cottages”.

And I love looking at them, thinking of the history they've been part of while they've stood here on this Island in the middle of the Straights between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron ---who owned these?  What was their life like?  What memories were made here?

We took a long walk on Tuesday afternoon after my last class was done, The Hubster, my friend Jill, and Myself – just on foot, exploring we went, winding up down town for dinner on our last night on the Island, making rather good use of the warmest afternoon yet – temps in the high 40s.

We climbed high and looked down at lovely older inns.

And we walked down narrow lanes past cottages just waiting for occupants to arrive for “The Season.”

I hope you enjoy the slide show of the dwellings we passed on our evening jaunt.  Click the image below if you are unable to view the slide show on your mobile device.  You’ll be taken to the photo album for viewing.

Since we were there at the beginning of the season, most of these homes and buildings still sat quiet and vacant, giving the area an eerie feeling of Summers past --but the Island is awakening.  Soon it will be a hustling and bustling place, and I'd love to enjoy it in THAT season --- some day.

  4. Me too, Elaina. I am a Michigander and love the Island. I would love to spend the whole summer or even a month on the island. Oh well, now I live in Virginia and hope Bonnie was inspired to design a quilt with Mackinac Island in mind. So glad you enjoyed your visit.

  9. I may have missed it, but have you shared whether you liked the quiet and calm of not having cars? I think it would be amazing and it fits with how we love our vintage treadle machines, no plug, no motor.
