Cathedral Stars in Sarasota!

FL_Jan2014 148
I spent yesterday with the Friendship Knot quilters of Sarasota Florida!

I’m here with them for a couple more days yet –and it’s been fun getting to know the ladies—we also had a lot of visitors from all over Florida, and it’s fun to talk to the winter Floridians and learn where they come from.

Is there any better way to spend a day than with a gaggle of quilters digging in the scraps?

Two blocks quilts have always held a fascination for me – the things you can do with them, twisting, turning, alternating – secondary designs bring in the wow factor.

Cathedral Stars tucked on a quilt frame on end!

Our classes are being held at a local Mennonite church, in the room where they do their quilting both for charity, and hand quilting for others to raise funds to support their charity efforts.

If you look closely you will see that the star block is THE SAME block used in our Celtic Solstice mystery – but this time it is on point, and the 4 patches are scrappy..  What changes the look of the whole quilt is the asymmetrical alternate block, a Jacob’s Ladder variation with the ladders running north and south ---This is one of my favorite quilts of all time.

Another favorite on point setting – We had an Easy Street in class for show and tell!

This big quilt was deemed “necessary” and came down to Florida in an RV for the winter ---just so it could be shared in our class, and I’m sure glad she brought it when space in an RV is at a premium.  FABULOUS job!

Cathedral Stars, Sarasota FL 2014

Since today is Sunday, and we can't use the church space until this afternoon, I have a bit of a morning reprieve to relax and enjoy.

There will be some sewing in the hotel room, and perhaps a walk in the morning sunshine!

This afternoon we have a half-day Boxy Stars workshop planned for more scrap piecing!

Have a great Sunday, everyone!

  4. Bonnie, your classes are always such fun and so worthwhile! These ladies are having a ball and it looks like a lot of beautiful batiks have been brought out for this Cathedral Stars occasion. But my favorite is the one dear traditional and Civil War fabric choices; I confess that's my bias. The truth is that your designs look good any which way! Thanks!
