Why Quilts Matter! Give-Away!

quiltsmatter1
***NOTE*** This Give-Away has ended!!  Contracts to pdudgeon!!

Have you watched Why Quilts Matter?

The series has aired on PBS and has been featured on The Quilt Show, but we're still trying to get the word out to quilters. All proceeds of the series go back to the non-profit Kentucky Quilt Project to fund future quilt projects.

In 2011, thirty years since its founding, The Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc., has created another “first” – a nine-part documentary series titled Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics. The series takes a fresh look at quilts and spreads the word about their unique position at the center of a startlingly broad grid of topics, ranging from women’s studies to the contemporary art market.

"Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics" is the landmark nine-part documentary series that offers a fresh, relevant exploration of quilts.

This fascinating series explores quilts in fresh new ways by taking you behind the scenes to reveal the unique position of quilts at the center of American culture. You'll go on an amazing quilt journey from function to art, to women's empowerment, economic clout, American politics and beyond.

"This compelling and visually rich series convinces us that quilts do matter. VERDICT: This wonderful series would be an important addition for all museums, libraries and quilt guilds."
- Library Journal Review

  2. Quilts matter because they represent the continuing love flowing from generation to generation in a family. They are a physical representation of that glue that holds families together.

  3. When we moved last March we gave up TV so I can't watch this series on TV...so see I need to win :0)
    thanks for the chance.
Quilting is my therapy, I use to think that was a cute saying but now I really do use it too unwind, and de-stress and feel like I am making a gift someone will really love.
And of course now that you have turned me on to scrappy it is a new love affair with quilting!

  5. I have an old quilt top my Grandmother made. The fabric is tattered because she only had old, worn out clothing to use for her quilts. I also have several quilts my mother made. These quilts hold a special place in my heart because of the connections to their makers.

Quilts matter because it is a way to leave a piece of yourself for your children, grandchildren, etc. They only have to wrap up in a quilt you made to feel your love.

  11. I think quilts matter for the same reason that art matters...each and every quilt is an expression of something that moved someone to create, thus leaving a small portion of their soul on display for the world to see! pbstrand@msn.com

  14. As a quilter, the more I learn the better quilter I become and can pass it on to others. Wish I had some from my family, but I'm making sure my family has quilts to keep and pass on.

  15. Quilts matter to me for a variety of reasons going back in my family, but mainly because they're a perfect junction between right brain/left brain impulses. They combine a creative and artistic outlet with tangible, practical, even frugal benefits. I personally couldn't enjoy the creative process as much if the end result wasn't so useful.

  16. Sounds like a wonderful series! Quilts matter to me in many ways. I am the only quilter in the family and I am fairly new, but now my niece is starting to sew. Hoping she gets bit by the quilting bug!

Quilts matter to me because they are a link to just why I love to quilt so much! My great-grandmother, who I never knew except through her quilts, was a quilter. And my mother-in-law taught me that it's okay to quilt (My own mother was a "city-girl" and not much into things "made by hand"... part of her struggles with "not much" growing up, I think. I love quilts! And the process of making them. Would love to own the series!! Thanks for thinking of us.

  18. Quilts are a window into the past and a link to the future. I have my grandmother's hand pieced and hand quilted quilts and hope that some day my grandchildren will have my quilts.

  22. Bonnie, great give away.
    Why quilts matter?
    Where do I start.
They matter having vintage quilts to guess about their stories.
They matter with our quilts from generations before us.
They matter when I know everyone in my large family all have a keepsake quilt from me.
They matter as a good reason to take classes and go to retreats to meet and share the love of quiting.
They matter because what else would I do 10-12 hours a day without quilting and quilting blogs to read, mystery quilts to follow.
They just matter so much. HUGS

Quilts matter to me because they connect me in a very sensory way to all the artful, creative, caring, conserving, and Anonymous women who came before me and who went unremarked and undocumented. Yet they left behind such a fabulously warm and wonderful legacy by which I can today warm myself and take so much inspiration.

Loved the first series of Why Quilts Matter. Look forward to seeing this new series.

  36. For me it's simple. My mantra is 'My soul is fed by needle and thread'. By looking at vintage quilts you can see into the soul of the maker; and some day, the same will be true of the quilts I have stitched.

Why do Quilts matter..... Has anyone ever felt it a legacy...Well that's how I feel. My grandmother (my daddy's mommy) was a quilter and I feel she left this legacy to me to carry on. I never knew this woman, only met her once at age 10, but never knew her. She wasn't the gramma who made me cookies, or babysat when needed...I flat out never knew her, but her quilts would show up each year out of our scrap pieces of clothing and it was like she was there to keep us warm. When I became old enough to play with needles and thread I would cut out pieces and put them together in random, hadn't a clue what I was doing, but I knew they needed to go together. So its my legacy to carry this on into the next generation. Stress of advertising brought me back to quilting, and wont give it up again....

I also have made comfort quilts and memory quilts for friends and family with cancer and for a cousin who lost a 2-year-old daughter. Each quilt is special, no matter how simple or complex it is. 52. Quilts tie me to my gone but never forgotten grandmothers. Growing up we had quilts, and I received one of my own from one grandmother and since acquired another needing repair from my other grandmother. The latter is made from woolen Pendleton jackets from the 40s/50s. Quilts take time to make, and each stitch, when being made for a loved one, is filled with love and when received it's like having love draped all over us :)

  56. Quilts do matter! I love to see my great-niece and great-nephew drag their "baby" quilts around their house then lay the quilt on top of their bed each night. And now they are begging me for "a bigger quilt, Aunt Lisa, one like dad has." In short, quilts create memories of loved ones, both while I make the quilt and for them using the quilt.

I have found making quilts to be a way to share memories via fabric and as a creative outlet. I made queen-sized quilts for both my children when they married, using fabric scraps from clothes I made them, and other leftover fabrics. I am very interested in this DVD series. We just moved from Kentucky last summer after living there all our married life (30 years). My husband took a new position and we are now in central Mississippi but we miss Kentucky! As far as quilting for a creative outlet: I have three projects in the works! Beth.neihof@gmail.com

  63. why quilts matter to me, first it was a way to leave something for my children that I had made that would last a long time, then it was a way to get through cancer treatments, to keep my mind focused on something, lasting and creative, when I was not sure how long I would be here, but just kept quilting, and I survived cancer, quilting is a way to help veterans know that I appreciate them paying the price for my freedom. Quilting matters on so many levels that I find it necessary in my life!! Thanks Bonnie for all you do to entertain me:))

Thanks for this chance to win! Quilts matter to me because teaching myself to quilt has got me through some very hard times. Now it is a huge part of who I am, and I look back at those quilts I made and feel a sense of having something good come out of all that bad. My daughter watched me quilt things together when otherwise I think she would have grown up watching me fall apart. Quilts matter very much to my family, as I think they do to many, many others. I'm indebted to every quilter before me.

The other way they matter to me is the wonderful feeling I get when I see the smile on the face of recipient of one of my quilts. I've never sold one, I always give them away... and the feeling of goodwill is almost better than a box of chocolates. :)

  112. Making quilts is a way for me to express my creativity, and it has kept me sane during many crazy times in my life. And I love giving away my quilts as a way to share my love with my friends and family. That's why quilts matter to me! Thanks for the chance to win this documentary.

  113. I'd love to watch this series.
Why do quilts matter? I think that they matter to different people in different ways: an unexpected present, a source of comfort for who knows what, sometimes even unknown to the giver.
To a quilter a quilt is like a child, or so I read recently. You invest so much time in it that it becomes an extension of yourself. But like a child when your work on it is done you have to let go.
After one and a half years of patchwork and quilting I've still got a lot to learn, but I have learnt that my best effort is exactly that and I must be satisfied with less than perfection. There's certainly no point I beating myself up over points that don't match; next time there will be fewer.
I've never considered myself to be unemancipated, but I have found a hobby, with its associated community, that gives me a new sense of worth. That matters.

  116. Quilts matter to me because of the love that goes into making them whether it is for a baby or a relative who doesn’t know they need one but you need to make that quilt so that you can put all the love you can into making that quilt because you can’t be with them when they need you. I also love the messages they relay that they were alive and well as portrayed in the Changi quilts form a person of war camp and now resides in the Australian war museum.

  117. Hi Bonnie,
This wasn't shown on PBS in our area, but I would love to see it.
Quilts matter for so many reasons, both personal and historic, but my initial exposure to quilting was through my local chapter of the Quilts for Kids organization. Making quilts for sick little ones gives me such a feeling of giving back, particularly as a cancer survivor myself. I have branched out to making quilts as gifts for family and friends, who all seem thrilled to receive them. I am so glad to have discovered the art of quilting, and the generous and caring people of the quilting community!

  119. Why Quilts matter to me: I quilt because I am. My love of quilting stems from my innate need to create, an integral part of my personality that cannot be denied. I have used many different mediums to fulfil that creative drive – pencil, paint, flowers, clay but fabric is what truly speaks to my heart. Quilting satisfies the desire to make something with my own two hands. It is at once, exciting to see the colors and shapes and movement come together, yet quiet and soothing as the fabric passes through my hands. The resultant quilt is tangible proof of my creative drive but it is not only decorative. A quilt can provide for the basic needs of humans – shelter & warmth. Quilting combines but the logical and organized with the creative and artistic – balancing both sides of who I am.
I do not have quilters that preceded me in my family that I am aware of, so my quilts are the connection to future generations and maybe a quiet nod to the past generations unknown quilter.

  121. Why quilts matter? Its a generation thing for me. My grandmother made some quilts. My Aunt has been quilting for 40 years. She is the one who inspired me to quilt. Now my mom quilts. She always has sewn but she quilts. Now I have 4 nieces and I hope to teach 2 of them to quilt. Quilting is a way for all of us to share apart of our lives.

  132. QUILTS MATTER because they connect you to the past and the WORLD. I have lived with quilts all my life. My Great Grandmother was a seamstress who used her scraps to make quilts. We've all had a hand at working on HER work....sometimes with thread she left behind. Thanks for the chance!

  135. Quilts matter on so many levels. When I make aquilt part of me is in it. My love. will wrap whomever it is made for. I always pray for the person receiving it as I stitch it together from the beginning right down to hand stitching the binding. Quilts also are alink to the past. My most treasured quilts are those made by my grandmothers and hubby's grandmothers. I am fortunately to have family quilts from the 1800's through the mid1900's,. many in pristine condition. They all have stories to tell and are so important to me.

  151. Quilts matter to me because they are a connection to women past, present and future that I would never have met otherwise. Making them brings me joy and keeps me sane. Viewing quilts made by others causes me to be amazed in admiring the creativity. Four years ago my husband had a motorcycle accident and ended up in ICU with a traumatic brain injury. It changed our life completely. I chose to give up a high stress job that I loved because I needed to be closer to home as we made the adjustments to our new reality. It made me reevaluate what was important and I now have a much less stressful job that I love with a more flexible schedule. Because of that I have more time to quilt, I feel less guilt when I spend my entire day off quilting and I've met the most amazing group of women who love, care and support each other!!! That's why quilts and quilting are important to me.

"Quilts matter because they link our past with our future. When my Dad was born in 1921, his Mom stenciled Animals in his baby room just above his bed. She would point to them and say what they were. My Dad learned them. When he was 3 or 4 His Mom made a quilt with the same stencils. My Dad learned to sew big stiches around the animals. Cival War blue shirting and white prints. When Dad's Mom passed away no one wanted the old stinky quilts. My Mom and Dad took them to use as packing around the items my Dad did get. There was the Blue and White. My Dad remembered working on that quilt. One year on vacation he took us to the house where the room with the stencils were. To this day the stencils have been preserved. This is WHY QUILTS MATTER! they have a story to tell and a story to pass on." shedeneal@charter.net
