When the Cats are Away

IMG_0895-001
I’m having a heck of a time getting to know my new Windows 8 laptop.

I know it’s just operator error, and a conflict with programs I’ve used for years that I really like – like windows live writer.

I like the photo editing options it comes with for blog writing ---and I’ve loved it.  But on this new laptop the text is SO SMALL while writing within windows live writer – changing the font on the laptop doesn’t change what happens in the editing screen, nor does changing the screen resolution.  I’m having to write this in a 24 size font – and then highlight everything and change it back to normal before sending it over to publish.  What a pain!

If anyone out there uses Windows Live Writer and has a solution for making the font a more comfortable size to write with – please let me know what you did!

On the regular browser pages I can hit Ctrl + and make the font bigger when I need it to be, but it doesn’t work from within Windows Live Writer.  And as I get older, I need things more comfortable for my eyes – not more straining!

Everything on this laptop is different – and sometimes that makes things not so comfortable – but I am challenging myself to just breathe and use it and figure it out before we leave for Dallas on Sunday!  Will I be ready to go solo with this computer when it’s time to fly? That’s what this blog post is for – to see if I can do the things I usually do before I HAVE to do them!

Miss Marple on my new HP Spectre!

The Hubster and Jason took off this morning to go check out a couple of 4-wheelers a guy had listed on Craigslist.  This gave me a couple of hours to finish baking and icing some cookies, and to start sewing the rows of my cheddar sampler together!

IMG_0886

The top is webbed together and I am joining the rows!

IMG_0887

Looking pretty good so far!

All assembled!

Close ups are fun!

So many great blocks!

Such a happy scrappy  mess!

Now the big question is…WHAT to do with BORDERS?!

I’m thinking of floating the whole center with something,……and maybe doing more strings for the border?  Or can it just be DONE and I can bind it?

Whatever it is, my time alone is coming to a close and it’s time to get the potatoes in the oven for dinner!  Jeff should be arriving shortly and I’ll have both boys here ---and the machine time will be over!

Tonight – binding with my boys by my side – that is unless I can talk them into another game of Farkle??

Much love from Buck Mountain ---

  3. I always thought quilts had to have borders-but sometimes I have to rethink and just decide that enough is enough and put on a binding! This is one that looks complete as is (outer sashing works as a border) and a binding is all it needs (probably in cheddar) to finish it off!

    1. I'm thinking solid red for the binding -- there is a bit of solid red in the center and I'd like to bring that to the edge :)

  4. Beautiful, Bonnie! I know it will be a hit no how you finish it! That's a whole lot of piecing, but boy is it ever worth it! Love it! Enjoy time with your boys!

  5. I would leave off the borders but then I do not think most quilts really need borders.

  7. I vote for binding, Too!
You have created a scrap quilt in its highest form, Bonnie.
I'm sure there will be Farkle at my house tonight, if you want to drop by. : )

  8. bind it ~ sometimes more is not more and this needs nothing more to detract from the happy scramble.

  11. I got a new desktop with Windows 8 on it last year for Christmas - I'm still learning just how to maneuver through it at all, and using my laptop with WinXP for everything...I'm one of those "comfy old shoes" kind of people, lol. Merry Christmas, and I'm with everyone else about just binding the quilt, it already has that scrappy sashing 'border' that frames it. My personal inclination, based on the pix, would be to use navy or some dark blue, but you said you might be preferring red and it's yours and you see it first-hand so would know better :) Blessings.

  12. I love the idea of red binding. Do you remember what manufacturer made the cheddar fabric? I would like to get some for a quilt I am planning. Have a wonderful holiday with your guys.

  13. Bonnie, I have not used Windows Live Writer, but now, after you mentioned it, and I researched it, it seems as though it could be quite4 useful. Here is a link that discusses your problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windowslive/forum/writer-wlsettings/windows-live-writer-font-size/14a75dbd-2208-4750-86db-b902524bbf78?msgId=825bc8a4-0b2e-4eed-9030-ab955253ed45

    I hope it helps.

  14. I love the idea of red binding too. I think the red will complete it. Nice computer! I envy you and others that can figure these techy things out. I'm always scratching my head and calling for my son cause I can't figure it out.

Wishing you and your family happy holidays!!

  15. For your computer, changing the resolution to something smaller should solve your issues. Yes, smaller will make your text bigger...think of it as that many FEWER dots on your screen in each dimension.

    Hope that helps!

  16. Love it Bonnie and the surprise red is great...I would bind it in red also. Good luck with Windows 8. We had to replace our desk top and our computer person said "Don't even try Windows 8" I have 7 on my lap top and he loaded 7 on the new desktop. I think he thought we were too old to change things too much. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

  30. Another Farkle player! Yeah, Bonnie. This was the game we played w our 4 sons in restaurants while waiting for our food. I even have a set of dice that are about 1/8" on a side. Easy to slip into a plastic bag & into my coin purse. Merry Christmas!

  32. Merry Christmas Bonnie to you and your family!
My dad has windows 8 laptop, hates it!

    It is perfect!

  33. Bonnie, you can get Windows 8 removed from your laptop, and have Window 7 installed if you wish. I asked about it at Staples. Their tech dept will do it. You do need Windows 7 disks, and it has a fee involved.

  34. I'm not to computer savey and struggle with windows 8. One of the biggest help I found was running my apps and internet from the desktop instead of the windows 8 start page. Google it to learn about it. The desktop works more like windows 7

  35. Bonnie, Have you played with Windows Accessibility options? I don't have Win8, but all other versions of Windows have Accessibility on the control panel. This allows you to magnify all text to a larger size. On Win7 you can actually set a custom size. Good luck with that. BTW I don't know of anyone who is happy with Windows 8.
