THINGS that drive me NUTS!

Just before my birthday Lisa and I turned a lunch date into an afternoon of joint running around which included copious amounts of Antique Mall browsing.

One of the things that has been at the back of my list for quite a long while was a request from DH to find a butter dish “With a handle on the top” so we could cover the butter without getting the lid OR our fingers IN the butter when putting the lid on or taking it off.

I found the butter dish. It’s fiesta ware, vintage – cute yellow.

Now look at this problem.

Who was the GOMER who put an extra chunk of butter at the END of the stick of butter…and how am I supposed to put this lid ON the butter?!

I’m shaking my head.

Oh yes, and just pretend you don’t see toast crumbs there on the dish as well.

A glimpse into what it’s like to come home after a week of leaving everything to the menfolk in my house!

Oh – on a side note --- you’ll be sure to want to come back tomorrow. My buddy Pat Sloan and I are cooking up a Give-Away to celebrate the extra day we have in February this year!

Stay Tuned!

  1. Messy butter dish with bread crumbs--pet peeve! Since I am the lone female living with DH and two college-age sons, your butter dish looks pristine compared to mine! : )

  2. This makes me chuckle....if it were at my house, I'd thrilled they put an new cube of butter on the dish. :)
Aren't pet peeves wonderful! Mine is the half full water glass left on the table for the cat to knock over. Men!

  3. I find toast crumbs in my butter to be VERY annoying!! I remove them and put on a paper towel....refuse to have them on my toast lol. Hubby doesn't see the "big deal".

  4. Ohhh, I want to commend you for posting on your blog every day. Another pet peeve is to follow a blog and some don't have posts since last year or early Jan. 2012.

  5. Have you ever heard of a butterbell, it allows you to keep your butter on the counter so the bread does not get torn when you butter it, but there is water in the bottom which creates a seal to keep the butter fresh. I got one for a friend, she loved it!!

  6. I'm with you on the toast crumbs. It's like I'm supposed to eat someone else's garbage!!! But DH and DS don't either one get it. That's what butter knives are for fellas.

  7. LOL...the toast crumbs drive me nuts, too! Just cut the extra piece of butter into pats and stick them along side of the longer butter stick. The lid should fit that way if you don't cut the pieces too thick. Too funny, still laughing....guess it's the same in all households. :-)

  8. This USED to be a minor irritation at my place, but after nearly 2 years since DH passed away, I'd give ANYTHING to see the butter in my fiestaware this way!

I'm with you. Toast crumbs drive me nuts. However, be thankful someone put butter in the dish. In my house it would not be unusual for there not to be butter in the dish.... everyone knows there is a butter dish fairy. Oh yeah, that's me.

  10. I gave up on the butter dishes...my pet peeve is crumbs in the jam or finding 5 open jars of strawberry jam in the fridge. His "solution?" Suggesting I make the cookies that uses jam until the extra jars are used up...male logic!

  11. LOL...here it is little bits of butter still in the paper and all over. They need us.

  12. My hubby likes the tub butter, so it is just the kids and I so I put the left over butter chunks from baking on a saucer. My hubby hates that I leave it out so that it is soft.

  13. Butter? Toast? Not something I see much of. Did I mention butter comes in squares? Your new container would be useless.

  14. I feel your pain. My hubs always wipes the knife on the side of the butter dish so there are always crumbs of some sort and you can't pick up the dish without getting your fingers in it.

  15. I can't stand crumbs in the butter dish. Everyone knows to use a butter knife to cut butter and not use it to spread on toast, pancakes, muffins. I made sure my kids learned this by the time they could feed themselves. I'm very ticky when it comes to shared food like jams, pickles, condiments etc. Have you used a Butter Bell? It's great. No need to put the butter in the fridge. It's always spreadable. The one that holds a stick is much better then the round one.

  17. That ranks right up there with the empty toilet paper roll.

  18. So which one admitted to being the "gomer," father or son??
Toast crumbs are just a way of life.
@GeeMa...my DH couldn't put on a new roll of TP to save his life. :)

  19. I'm training my Husband Wonderful and College-boy son to refill the toilet paper, but they both mess up the butter! Bonnie, men are bears with furniture! I believe that is a quote from Ron White, the comedian.

  20. Men! And I bet if you ask that elusive "Not Me" character will be the culprit.

  21. Yeah, if it was at my house, I'd take the lid off to find...nothing. Joke: how many men does it take to change the toilet paper roll? Answer: no one knows, it's never happened.

  23. You know, you can please some people some of the time and.....Love the dish though.

  24. Actually, I'm shocked that anyone knew how to add more butter to the dish. Do they know how to put toilet paper on the roll?

  25. You could always get a butter bell (aka, french butter dish) which keeps the butter fresh and soft without refrigeration. Your fingers never get close to the butter! See a diagram here, http://www.webexhibits.org/butter/crocks.html

  28. my dear hubby loves to go around vacuum cleaning, and loves to make his own need be felt by crumbling anything cookie'ish on the floor. the mice love him, in spite of the cats that chase them, and breed like in biblical times, be fruitfull - ehm crumbfull - and multiply! never mind the butter then.... 8^}

My mother bought this same butter dish at Christmas time for a present for herself. Unfortunately, we live on the West Coast, and for those who don't know why that matters...cubes of butter are different sizes.

Much like Best Foods mayo is called Hellman's mayo depending on which side of the Rockies you live, cubes of butter are different also. West coast cubes are shorter and fatter.

As a result, I washed her butter dish put a new cube of butter on the dish, placed the lid on the dish, lifted the lid and the butter had disappeared. It was stuck to the inside of the dome of the lid.

We had a good laugh at that, and try to trip the butter from the corners so it fits ;).

That would be trim, not trip.
