Tumbling Along!

20150822_175850
I’ve got 7 rows together!

SEVEN ROWS!

That might not seem like a lot, but when I stop to think that this is all out of small bits of fabric that I wanted to go away --

And that I have sewn these rows by joining pairs of tumblers as Leaders & Enders at the ends of lines of chain piecing…and I only had to stop when the rows were long enough to find which row needed to go where for the best placement and sew rows together…

I am well on my way to a great free scrappy quilt for the year!

I know there is at least ONE more row at home –so I”ll be bringing this quilt section home with me on Monday morning hoping to add to it, perhaps during Quilt-Cam on Tuesday night!

5 rows pressed!

I am adding dark tumblers on either end of the rows as a self-made border.  Someone on our Quiltville’s Open Studio group for Facebook showed theirs and I loved the idea – so whoever you are, thank you!

Fun and Scrappy!

I am setting mine color/neutral/color as it makes the pressing easy.  It also makes the assembly easy because all of the seams will automatically nest if I press everything to the dark.

I like things that are EASY!!

Speaking of Easy --

Mom’s broccoli chicken salad!

I made up a big batch of this today. We had it at Mom’s while I was there, and I forgot what a good variation on slaw this is.

I posted the photo to Instagram and Facebook and folks are clamoring for the recipe so here you go:

Anita’s Broccoli Chicken Salad:

1/2 head cabbage, shredded fine.
1 large carrot –use a vegetable peeler to shred them in long thin ribbons ((Fun for older kids to do!)
1/2 large head broccoli chopped fine
3 green onions chopped fine, greens and whites.
1 handful of fresh parsley, chopped.  (Also good with cilantro, optional)
1 13 oz can chunk white chicken, drained and chopped.
Optional: 1/2 cauliflower, chopped small
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup craisins.

Mix all in a bowl and make dressing:

3/4 cup Mayo (Not miracle whip)
1 Tbl vinegar
1 Tbl Sugar (I used Truvia, 2 individual paper packets)
1 Tbl Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper

Mix dressing well and stir into salad.  Allow to refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.

This keeps in the fridge very well for several days and is so yummy, a meal in itself!

I’ll be adding this recipe to the recipes tab at the top of the blog so you can find it later.

As for what else I’ve been working on this weekend?  I can’t show you –it’s a MYSTERY!

Have a great Saturday evening, everyone!

  2. I put two rows of red tumblers on my placemats for borders and I am going to put self-made borders on my Tumbler quilt too - I am just trying to decide how many tumblers to put in one row. I am using 2 1/2" tumblers.

  6. Our Illinois weather turned delightfully cool so I spent my daylight hours working in the woods which I LOVE. Still, what's a day without sewing, so I hand-pieced on my Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses tonight. I think it's my 23rd of these blocks. Had more deer pix on the trail cam today.
