More Novelty Stars..

I still need 3 more…and they are cut out to sew this morning.

As I lay in bed last night, before my brain shut down so I could sleep ---I played with setting ideas in my head. Do you do that?

I am an “on-point” girl, but I quickly ruled THAT out…these blocks are all directional. There is a definite right-side-up to them….

Sashing? Maybe. A pieced sashing? Well, maybe ---and then there are the borders…The novelty fabrics I have are all scraps like this. I don’t have any “yardage” pieces really because these little bits all came from other sources.

Does this mean I get to go shopping?

Well, Maybe!

I keep reminding myself this is a BABY Quilt – A drag around, love it to death, snugglie –DO NOT GO OVERBOARD ON THE PIECING! It’s not easy for me to do – because those voices in my head are going “It needs this!” “What about THIS?!” “Oh, you know you could really…..” >_<

It was a lot of fun yesterday picking up each print square, and then digging into the strips, choosing 3 that would compliment whatever was going on in the center. As laid them out this morning…things aren’t quite balanced…I see a lot of green, and a lot of yellow/orange. And purple.

novelties 013

Several of these strips have NOTHING LEFT ---if the end of the strip was 10” or shorter, I cut them into 2.5” squares, or tossed them into the crumb basket. It never stops to amaze me that we can make SO LITTLE do so MUCH when working with the pre-cut scraps. They are always there, already cut to size, just waiting for the right project.

My favorite is the sea turtles block! Boy I’ve had that orangey-peach corner fabric for ages and ages…this is the end of it – after this, it’s gone bye bye!

  1. Bonnie - These are so cute! I see different colors than you, though. I see a lot of blue in addition to the yellow/green. Maybe what you see as purple looks blue on my 'puter? Anyway, very cute! I have to laugh at you saying there isn't much piecing here....those are pieced in my eyes! When I don't want a lot of piecing I put 4-patches with solid blocks....I guess everything is relative :-) Enjoy your day today, I know you must be loving this down-time at home. I hope you got some milk and groceries, that 21 year old is going to keep you and grocery store in close contact!

  2. Love the blocks - how about a multi-coloured polka dot sashing and just a plain border.
Or plain sashing and polka dot border.
I love polka dots - so cheerful.

I love these blocks, but I think they need something to tie them together. They sure are scrappy! I love scrappy, but I also like to rest my eyes a bit. I'd ask the parents of the baby-on-the-way what color the nursery is and use that for borders and sashing. A scrappy border surrounded by solid/almost solit borders would be fine.

  6. Beautiful blocks Bonnie(try saying that three times without spluttering!), I love what you've done so far. I think they're definitely calling for sashing, maybe something in a bright solid or reads-as-solid?

Your turtle block... I think I have those cute guys in a sort of aqua blue; and I have the corner fabric in a different colorway. I like looking at other people's quilts to see if I have the fabric!

  7. Love the quilt. It will be fun for this little one to enjoy all of the colors and design. I would choose a solid sashing and border to set off everything that is going on in the blocks. Anyway, whatever you choos will be great.

Love this easy block for so many reasons. The scrappy look is fab, and agree with others a restful sashing/border effect would make those blocks really stand out. Enjoy your day.

  10. Love this new version of I Spy. I have made several of your I Spy Four Patch to use a gifts when my sisters become Grandmas for the first time. Yup, the quilt goes to Grandma and stay at her house!!! I often buy fat quarters of these kind of prints when I'm traveling or visiting a new shop. Thanks for sharing, I see stars in my future!

  11. These blocks look like so much fun Bonnie!

I'm not so sure they need a sashing though--looking at them laying together like that I am loving the secondary patterns (scrappy four patch and four color split square-in-square) that form when the blocks are put right next to each other.

Although all that color and pattern would definitely make the top a really busy one. But then maybe the eye can "rest" in the outer borders.

  12. I think I'd use a 2 inch neutral sashing (light blues) with scrappy cornerstones. I think you should let yourself go shopping for some border fabric...give yourself a break girl!

  13. What a spectacular baby quilt! Bold graphics, fun images--what more could a little one want?

  14. what about a narrow black(print) sashing? Since I had to BUY black for the mystery quilt, I've seen some real cute black prints out there.

  15. How fun...bright and cheery! I think this might be the first time I've seen you do flying geese...one of my favorite blocks. Just curious, what method do you use to make them?

  16. It never ceases to amaze me how the same block can look like a star or an "x" depending on the color hues and contrasts. So much fun. Moving in less than two weeks, taking a little break from packing to see what you are up to and maybe piece a couple of those string blocks for the mystery. As always, thanks for sharing your goings on.

  17. I don't know what is in your stash... but I'm thinking a black/white stripe fabric may be a cute sashing??? also today on fb I saw a quilt that had stars sorta cocked to left and then right and those backgrounds were black and white... I'll see if I can find it again and comment with your name link so you'll see it...

I'm sure you'll come up with something just perfect for these... :)

  18. great example of how fabric selection can alter the appearance of the block. at a glance, block # 1 and block # 2 look completely different. love these!!! thank you Bonnie for all you do for the quilting world...

  19. I love these bright fabrics. How about no sashing at all and letting secondary patterns form. Or would that make the stars disappear?...Hmm, I guess you'll just need to keep playing - oh darn!

  20. This is a great baby quilt. Not all pink or blue pastels. The baby will love this and it will make a great I-Spy game. I'd set them with narrow or no sashing. I like the suggestion of a black print with bright cornerstones.

  21. I agree with Yankke Quilter - a small sashing with cornerstones-maybe more novelty prints for the cornerstones-not sure what color sashing. I do like the black and white print idea that Bonnie~bingo suggested. Lois

  23. I'm certain you will find another scrap of that fabric somewhere. I always do! It may be like the cows that just keep finding there way back.
