Whoopie Pies, Ice Cream Sandwiches, Oreos–Or Cacti!?

MarksQuilt 001We arrived home last night just about dark.

It felt later than it was ---it was only 6pm but look at the beautiful sunset as we arrived closer to home.

Yes, through the windshield, so excuse the bug splats please!

I’m happy it is lighter in the morning. I’m not happy that it is getting dark so early.

If I stay in the basement with my daylight fluorescent bulbs brightly shining, and don’t look out the window, maybe I won’t feel like it’s time to go to bed 2 hours past dark.

I remember just a few months ago, how it was light in Soldotna, Alaska past 11pm ---and light again by 4am.  What a contrast it must be there now…getting close to being dark 24/7.

No wonder quilting thrives there ----it keeps quilters warm, and quilter’s hands busy when it is too dark to want to be out in it.

After unloading the pickup, and moving all the perishable food from the cooler to the fridge, I brought Mark’s quilt top down stairs to see about putting a backing together for it.

Where is that cactus fabric?!

Here it is!

MarksQuilt 002

Rats!  Not quite enough for two full lengths!

I figure I could get one full width length, and if I took the remainders, and cut them in half length-wise, and sewed those two narrower pieces end to end it would make a narrower width that was long enough.  I could insert something between the two pieces in a wide stripe that would go top to bottom of the quilt.

But as I’m digging –I took another look at this cactus fabric and saw….Oreo cookies with cream filling?  Or are they Ice Cream Sandwiches?  Or perhaps Whoopie pies?  Is there a hidden message in this fabric? LOL

Quilters can not live by Fabric alone..they must have CHOCOLATE!

A plaid that matches what is going on in the front of the quilt was found…remains of a previous backing.  Perfect.

MarksQuilt 004

Treadling the pieces together on the 227M!

This machine just runs SO smooth ---and she can sew in reverse so I can back tack the ends of seams.

MarksQuilt 005

It’s an odd match, maybe ---but definitely masculine and will use up both of these pieces of yardage.

MarksQuilt 006

Yep.  I still see Oreos.  LOL!

The quilt will be loaded today and I will get the quilting started.  My only hiatus today is a planned lunch date with my friend Mary!  Then I’ll be back at it.

Several have asked when the next Quilt-Cam will be.  I’m taking a break this week.  Emotions are too close to the surface and I have other things to take care of, but I promise we will get back to it as soon as I am able.  I’m off to Texas on Thursday!

  8. Sometimes we have to take time for ourselves and put aside the crochet, quilting or whatever to focus on ourselves.. I dont know what is going on but God will take care of it.. just pray about it. In the meantime.. Just a quick note of good news. My friend Mildred created a monster. Went to the Quilt show in Houston and bought stuff to do. Will post as I finish each project... lol.. am thinking of taking my sewing machine to my sister in laws for the long weekend to do some sewing... but then.. If the great niece is there wont get much done.. will be playing with her. Oh well.. we will persevere. Love the Cactus and the plaid together.. hang in there.. you are in my prayers.

  11. Hee! Yes, a bit of an odd match, but a surprisingly nice one. It works! When I look at those clusters of smaller cacti, I see clams or mollusks! :) Weird, I know, esp. since I'm 1200 miles from the nearest ocean.

Take care of yourself this week. We're all behind you!

  19. They DO look like Oreos!! LOL Did you see the article that said Oreos are as addictive as cocaine? Maybe the fabric designer was having Oreo withdrawal. :)

  20. I didn't see Oreos until you said that, now I can't "unsee" them. I may be looking for Oreos when I see cactus fabric. Your quilt looks like it has love sewn in.

  22. Beautiful backing - I would never have done that. Now I have to look at my stash differently. Here at the 49th parallel, the sun is now down before 5 pm, and I have to drive home in complete darkness. I remember when I lived much further north (not as north as Alaska, but close and yes, it gets dark waaaaay too early this time of year. Blessings to you and yours, and take all the time you need. In the meantime, I have been sewing up a storm as I send my prayers your way. Sewing is good therapy!

  23. Great backing. I wanted to tell you that I'm making Sister's Choice blocks and I can't believe how easy you make a nine patch. I finally understand the concept of leaders and enders so I'm using one nine patch as the leader ender for the next. I will be cutting out some pieces to use for leaders and enders. Thanks so much for the patterns you provide.

  24. Your sooo funny... that's all I can see in the fabric now too! A girls gotta eat! Now you've made me hungry! Oops...
When my SIL, FIL, were dealing with their cancer keeping warm was hard at times. I made feed corn sack's for heating pads (I made them out of fleece, some people use rice but the feed corn is more of a moist heat) and you heat them in the microwave for around 5 minutes. They both seemed to enjoy them a lot. Also, sometimes after kemo or radiation treatments the insides of the mouth/throat get extremely sore; (they don't want to eat) so we made shakes/smoothies with either carnation instant breakfast or a store brand and ice cream.... the coolness made it go down easier... and they got the nutrients they needed to keep up their strength. He is in our prayers; along with the rest of his/your family.

  25. Love the cactus fabric. And yes, I also see oreo's! But very prickly ones, I don't think they will taste that good.
You just take care of yourself and your family, I'm keeping you and your brother (and family) in my thoughts.
