Yipppeeee!
I’m so excited for my day to play on the blog hop for volume 13 of Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 blocks by 100 designers!
I have had my copy for a couple of weeks now, and these blocks are just FABULOUS.
So many ideas, so many ways to combine them, and best thing of all – they are all the same size as each other so will work seamlessly together.
This is my 12th issue, I’ve only missed one in the whole run of volumes. I missed the deadline on the first issue, but I’ve made SURE I’ve followed along in each issue since.
I love the challenge. Because I know it is coming up every six months, my little quilt-pickin’ mind is always wondering what I should try next, what something else would look like, what if I took this element and combined it with that one, would it give it a new look -
I’m eager to share my block with you, Dawn’s Early Light:
I’m feeling very patriotic!
Things I love about this block:
Strings! Small pieces! All of those fun neutrals! And the fact that it is an asymmetrical block which gives us many options!
Option 1!
Set the blocks straight for diagonal dynamics!
Option 2!
Rotate the blocks in a “barn raising” setting!
Option3
Rotate the blocks out from the center! Oooh! I like this!
Add some sashings!
I will often add a narrow sashing with heavily pieced blocks just to give the bulky seams a place to go instead of doubling them up on top of each other. I like the effect here.
Pull in a 4th color! Gold!
How terrific this would be for a Quilt of Valor?
Memorial day here in the states kicks of what I refer to as “Flag Season.” We’ve got Memorial Day, Flag Day, and Independence day all right in a row. It’s a great season for stitching up some blocks in red, white and blue.
My block is on page 29 of this issue!
We are going to hold a fun giveaway for 3 lucky winners!
One winner will receive a copy of 100 blocks vol 13 straight from the offices of Quiltmaker Magazine!
Two other lucky winners receive the mother load!
Winner #2 & #3 will each receive not only 100 blocks vol 13, but also a copy of the May/June 2016 issue with my quilt Razzle Dazzle in it!
Along with the bonus issue, each winner will receive either some fun and quilty fridge magnets, or bulletin board push pins, a scrappy quilty pattern and a charm pack!
Are you ready to enter? Our drawing will happen Monday Night, May 9th.

Squeal!!! I love your Dawn's Early Light block!!!! I have oodles of smaller (not the right size) neutral string blocks from my other string piecing projects. I've got a head start. I'll be taking left over red and blues from Minnick & Simpson to fill out the rest.
ReplyDeleteI'm skipping this popsicle stand . . . Sewing Retreat bound!! Brazos House in Rainbow, Texas here I come. Safe travels my friend for a fabulous week of teaching!! Hugs, Allison in Plano, Texas USA

The various settings were good visuals for me. Sometimes I like a block but cannot imagine the possibilities for its use in a quilt. Often I just use them in a pillow top. Thanks for all you do to inspire quilters!!

I really love that you are showing how it looks beside other blocks and in different settings. It really gives you so many possibilities. I wish the magazine did that as well, but it really is a great magazine to get lots of ideas from. Watched your quilt cam last night while doing a binding. Have a great time on your trip, it sounds like a wonderful place to be. Thanks for keeping us going.
ReplyDeleteBonnie: Another super block. I love the strings and I especially love the many different ways to rotate the blocks. Thank you for sharing this with us.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous block! I want to try so many of your block patterns, that I've decided to make 4 of each, and make a bunch of pillow covers that I can change out seasonally. I'll do this one in red & white for Canada Day! terri-fisher (at) shaw (dot) ca

ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the linky button works on my android tablet and phone. That's all I use and have no problems entering the giveaways. You just need to be connected directly to the blog.
I like the way the bloc uses strippy bits as well as squares and triangles. Another creative winner!
ReplyDeleteI love Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks! It's so much fun to look at the wide variety of patterns and imagine what they'd all look like in the same quilt!

ReplyDeleteOH, BONNIE! I just love this block. I did look at the new 100 Blocks, Vol 13 at the store the other day, but decided it could wait until next week to buy it. IF I could be lucky enough to win it, I would be so thrilled. I am in the middle of moving to my permanent retirement home, so did not want to take the time to add more magazines to the all ready overflowing bunch that I have to move. I love the different settings that you displayed the block in, also. I love Patriotic blocks and am always looking for new ways I can possibly do a QOV quilt, table runner, or things of the like. Thank You for sharing your skills with us! GOD Bless You!
ReplyDeleteI love Red white and blue quilts and the added bonus of string piecing really makes this one a stand out! Thanks Bonnie for all you do. nancy_steelemerritt@urmc.rochester.edu

ReplyDeleteJust love this block. So many possibilities.
ReplyDeleteI bought this copy a few days ago at my local quilt shop. Love #2 layout but its square. I have finally finished Celtic Solstice and it also is square. In that case, I could have done another couple of rows to change it but what do you do when its this kind of layout?
ReplyDeleteLois
Meant to say, I am looking at a full size quilt that will go over the pillows and have room for tucking.
