Hi Everyone!
I’m very excited to be participating on the first day of the blog hop promoting Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 blocks by 100 designers, Volume 8!
This is the 7th consecutive issue I have participated in, and let me tell you, these issues get better and better and better!
There are blocks of every kind to suit every taste, from traditional and modern pieced blocks, to paper pieced blocks – blocks for appliquers and embellishers and embroiderers alike!
I just love looking at the variety of blocks and all the different techniques used to make them and am so inspired by what is pulled together all in one volume for you!
My block started out as a “What can I do with all these left over bonus triangles” experiment!
The first block I did came from the bonus triangles from several Boxy Stars quilts that were donated to charity. I made the block from the bonus triangles in random scraps in 2005:
Saving bonus triangles in usable sizes mean I actually DO use them! I used my Bonus Triangle Buddy to mark my second sewing line giving me triangle squares that give me an even measurement for ease of use!

For volume 8 of 100 blocks – I wondered if I could tone down my usual scrappy everything look – for a bit more of a subtle color way:
I love blue and green together!
I dug into my blue and green scraps and my pre-cut squares from my Scrap User's System, including things like civil war, batik, old calicoes, recycled shirts, plaids stripes and everything under the sun as long as it was in these two color families. My usual love of scrappy neutrals as a background canvas did the job I wanted it to do – and there is everything in these backgrounds too including recycled plaids and stripes, batik, prints from the 1980s and modern black on whites!
You might even notice that not all the star points match perfectly. I sewed my block on my 1911 singer treadle machine. I’m not the best treadler out there, but I give it a good shot.
I loved this block so much that after I sent it off to Quiltmaker I just kept sewing!

No pattern is given in the magazine for the full quilt, but it will be making an appearance in my next book, More Adventures with Leaders & Enders, published by Kansas City Star and due out in Spring 2014!

ReplyDeleteI enjoy making scrap quilts the most, but I was unable to attend your workshop in Pgh due to being new in my job and not having any leave. The trunk show blew my mind. I am now following your blog and have bought a couple of your books. Your FB show n tells are the internet's *best* quilt show. My college friend was visiting last wknd so we could get her set up with some good retirement projects and we just swooned over pic after pic. Thank you so much for sharing so much!

I am always saying to myself "self, one of these days I will make that block"; but, life often gets in the way. Soon. Yes, soon I will get to make all that I want to make.

ReplyDeleteThis is a great block! My quilting group just did a half square triangel exchange and this would be a great block to use them in. I've never got this magazine before and if I don't win, I guess I'll have to just go buy it!

ReplyDeleteSince I started following you over a year ago, I've gone crazy cutting up my old stash into strips. I've made Boxy Stars, I have dozens of crumb blocks, and in the works right now are a bow-tie leader/ender project and a sister's choice quilt in autumn scraps that I hope to finish before Christmas as a gift for my sis-in-law. But even more fun has been collecting vintage sewing machines that I've picked up at rummage sales this summer. I have 13 machines now, including a Singer treadle hem stitcher that holds two spools of thread! Now, where do I put all of these treasures?!?! Anyway, I love this new block for my piles of 1/2 square bonus triangles!

They are almost done and I made a quilt of princesses for a great granddaughter who has not arrived yet. All the rest that I make go to charity because it makes me so o o happy to do so! ReplyDeleteOh Bonnie this quilt is gorgeous! I sleep under Easy Street. It has comforted me through the 3 surgeries I have had in the last 6 months. I made sure that it was finished washed and on my bed for when I came home from the hospital.

I just finished, Dancing 9 patch and a hexie flower quilt for my grand kids for Xmas. I have also started to put together Maverick Stars, and a pile of scrappy strips blocks for future use. I started trying to find them in stores because of your past blog posts. Out of the few past versions of 100 Block mags, I have made approx. 80 different blocks and shared them in an online Birthday Block Swap.
ReplyDeleteAs for your question....I haven't seen a Bonnie Hunter designed quilt that I haven't liked. I've made My Blue Heaven, Charlotte's Baskets, Scrappy Trips, Easy Street, with plans to make as many as possible from your books and website...not to mention Celtic Solstice. I am also doing this years L/E challenge of Split 9-patchs. Believe it or not...this Split 9-patch is probably going to fall into my "favorite" category. I was so excited when you announced it because I had several Folger's Coffee cans FULL of the correct size squares and triangles just waiting on your direction! :) In fact....I am AMAZED at how quickly the basket of L/E's grows as I work on other projects. I decided to play with the blocks I have assembled so far and now have about 80 blocks on my design wall. It is simply beautiful and I am thrilled with how it is coming along. Each time I complete another block using the L/E method...I must stop what I'm doing and go hang it with the others. Watching the quilt grow and grow makes me happy, happy, happy!!!!! :)

ReplyDeleteYou have turned me into a scrappy freak. I used to be a "one fabric per color" quilter, but now I don't even consider that option!! I just have to put borders on Blue Ridge Beauty, and have bought fabric and dug into stash to make a king size Smith Mountain Morning in blues and dark red/maroons.

ReplyDeleteOne of the first "real" quilts I made was your Pineapple Blossom. Made it to donate for a silent auction. Liked it so much, I made sure my bid was high enough I got it back. Love this block as well. Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks is my first go-to source for my groups block exchanges.

ReplyDeleteBonnie, I would love to win one of these magazines. I am a collector of UFO's. There are so many things I want to make, but I seem to have a difficult time finishing something before I see something else I want to start. I have Orca Bay started, also Strip Twist, and I have a stack of fabrics for Easy Street. This year I have tried to complete some of my many projects. I have one Christmas quilt ready to be gifted and another that just needs to have the binding finished. I have two more quilts ready to stitch down the binding. Since yesterday there are quilt blocks laying on the living room floor which is my design wall. I walk by and rearrange them every so often. I'm almost ready to start sewing on the sashings. My favorite quilt of yours, so far, is one I've worked on this past year using some of my daddy's shirts. I made Moth in the Window just for me. It has really been good therapy. My daddy always called moths "candleflies", so I'm naming the quilt, "Daddy's Candleflies." Thanks for all you do for us. You are truly an inspiration!

ReplyDeleteI recently finished Star Gazing from the "Scraps and Shirt Tales" book. I used many of my dad's blue shirts and some thrift store shirts for my neutrals. I think that it turned out beautiful. It was a labor of love. He will be gifted the quilt at Christmas. I have made at least 6 of your quilts and the favorite seems to be the last one. I am looking forward to Lazy Sunday which is at the top of the list. I love scrappy and try to make them with stash only. I would love to get this magazine with more inspiration. Thank you for the creative ideas.

ReplyDeleteI have gathered all my fabric and arranged what fabrics will go together. My big problems is trying make up my mind on which design I am going with. Since I have come to the conclusion I cannot decide I will go with a tried and true way of making my choice. I have a paper bag and in it I have put my block designs folded up, like picking out a name from a hat. I will reach in and pull out a block. Now I do not have to fret over what I will make. Game on! This is what happens when you have given us so many beautiful designs that we go on overload and we love every bit of the challenge. Thank you! Whether I win or lose I will end up with this book.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I'm hopelessly in love with you free quilt patterns. When I began making your sister's choice blocks, it got so out of hand, that I ended up with enough blocks to make TWO quilts! You would make my grandmother proud with your endless ideas for using up what you have on hand.

ReplyDeleteI have made Orca Bay, Bricks and Stepping Stones (twice), Pineapple Blossom, I'm finishing my Easy Street and getting ready for Celtic Solstice, plus I've got Sisters Choice in Progress :) I'm a Total Scrapper and now don't really like any of my quilts that only have three or four colors/fabrics in them, they are all most likely soon to be gifts, Thank You!!!!!

ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite quilts is my Eclipse quilt. Blocks were made by others in the Block Lotto. I won! As I received each block I embroidered the maker's first name and location on the block. It's a very bright, modern quilt. I LOVE it! You can see a picture of it here:

ReplyDeleteI think I have found my new best favorite. I have come to love almost everything you do and visit your free patterns and dream. I am not a big fan of string piecing (that's where I'm stuck with RRCB and OB) but I love the movement it gives your quilts and will eventually find my way to loving it when I find more time for just quilting. ReplyDeleteSo hard to pick a favorite, usually that would be the one I am currently working on. Orca Bay stands out a really fav, but then Easy St. is also. But maybe Hopscotch Butterscotch, is since I can't seem to part with it. Have to face facts, I love all your quilts. Keep coming up with them, I know I have the fabric to keep sewing them for years.

ReplyDeleteI am relatively new to the world of Bonnie Hunter. I have done Easy Street and Sister's Choice and have all 3 of your signed books and have converted almost all of my scrap bags into your Scrap Savers System. You may remember how pleasantly shocked I was at seeing Christmas fabrics in one of your gorgeous quilts at a trunk show in Prescott AZ. Seeing that Christmas fabric in that quilt completely changed the way I look at fabric!!

ReplyDeleteI would love the scrappy blocks and I am currently working on my EasyStreet quilt top, things got crazy last year and it had to be put aside. I am also doing leader and enders four patches this year.

I love how it becomes easy to do after a while and not having to hold or cut threads much anymore while sewing! Your blog is such a blessing of info and inspiration!
