Father’s Day, 2018!

34034500_10213428689203918_8108205639831912448_n

This photo is a new clipping that came into my life within the last month or so.

My niece Emilee, my brother Mark’s eldest is into genealogy and has found some amazing things online by searching newspaper records, old school year books (found a photo of my mom at 16!) and we have benefited greatly from her searching.

What a gift – these things that were thought lost, or never even knew they existed.

This photo is of my dad’s dad – my Grandpa Wilkinson who passed away when I was two.  My brothers never knew him.  I remember him faintly.

And here he is as a young man, just having returned from WWII with a bit of his story.  I was in tears reading this as I never really “KNEW” this man.  He was taken from us far too soon.

My dad is the cutie patootie blond 5 1/2 year old in the front with short shorts - named for his father.

The other crazy family thing is just how much my brother Scott looks like Grandpa.  Serious family resemblance.  And I love that.

As the Hubster is currently working in Europe, We’ll be saving Father’s Day for when he returns home.  So today, my thoughts are with his dad who left us in November – and my own Dad in Arizona.  I’ll call him when the hour is not so early there.

And my brothers who are wonderful men, terrific fathers – love them to bits.

I did NOT love this to bits:

THIS was my job yesterday.  Ewww.  Just ewww.

This had to have been one of the dirtiest ovens I have ever encountered, and I’m not done yet.

I could swear that no one has EVER cleaned this oven since it was installed.  What a heinous job.  But a good day for it.

Jeff arrived at Quiltville Inn to do the yard maintenance about the same time I was bringing the oven racks out to spray them down outside and let them bake in the Virginia June sun.

20180616_134351

Mighty fine diagonal stripes, son!

Those poles will be coming out, this will likely become a parking area --

20180616_134745

My blackberries are turning from green buds to color!

20180616_134726-001

BERRIES!!

20180616_130727

By the time he was blowing the clippings from the walk ….

20180616_151516

Things were looking much better!

The inside of the glass door was so caked with baked on stuff you couldn't see through it.  This is so greatly improved.

20180616_120357

Almost shiny chrome, but some black bits remain.  Any advice?

(HA! I may be sorry I asked!)

The other issue is the iron stove top burner grids.  I have soaked, scrubbed with straight, undiluted dawn, baked in the sun, tried oven cleaner – and nothing is getting the built up grease layer off of these parts.  (DIDN’T THEY EVER CLEAN THIS STOVE?!)

I’m considering making the 25 miles trek to Lowes for some heavy duty degreaser..but maybe someone has a better way to get the build up off of these parts short of putting them on the gas grill and burning the crud off?

Elaine and the beautiful Embossed White machine!

20180616_150207

Isn’t this the coolest cabinet?

The top makes the machine a desk..and when a machine is needed, the top comes off.  BEAUTIFUL wood!

When Elaine contacted me about her grandmother Ruth’s machine, asking if I would want it for the Inn, I said YES.  It’s perfect, likely finding a place to land between two twin beds as “night stand.”

But look:

20180616_150352

Inside the right hand drawer…

20180616_150400

Ink well!

20180616_150839

Oh you bronze beauty!  How lovely you are!

20180616_150230

And look!  The plugs go right into the back of the cabinet!

It’s the cabinet that is “hard wired!”

I’ll have to get the wiring checked out and updated – but this is just so very cool!

This machine dates from the 1920s, and was very high tech for its time.  Top of the line, all the way.

Irene and her friend received my first official “inside tour” with apologies for the state of things as we work to get things ready – one toilet is apart and being repaired, the den is full of kitchen stuff that can’t go in the kitchen until the cabinets are painted, and there is stuff “EVERYWHERE” but hopefully they could look past that and see what is happening here.

20180616_145146

And we had our first “viewing of the quilt!” over the porch rail!

Elaine is on the left, and this is her completed Jamestown Landing quilt from String Fling.  She took the workshop with me in Fredericksburg, VA just this past February.  Isn’t it gorgeous?

And so a tradition begins…quilts over the rail at Quiltville Inn.  Smiles and hugs all around!

20180616_171609

Driving home to the cabin past rolling slopes of Christmas tree farms…

It was a beautiful day – and I had in mind that I would go back to a little local joint (about 4 miles from the cabin) where a blue grass band was setting up to play into the evening hours, but I got home, sat on the couch to catch my breath, and I knew I was done.  I couldn’t leave again.

I tucked myself up with some  hand stitching on a binding and enjoyed my quiet evening.

But this morning it is almost too quiet.  Hubby in Amsterdam, Jeff back home, Jason in  South Carolina, My Dad in Arizona ---just me here today.

Maybe today is the day that I bring the treadle out to the porch at Quiltville Inn and give it a whirl?

I just may.

Quiltville Quote of the Day!

Happy Father's Day!

And to those who have ever stepped in as a father by example, or taken on the role of a father who is not there, this day is for you!

We appreciate you!

  3. Oh boy! This is the first comment regarding those oven racks. I put mine inside a plastic lawn bag and then spray them. Don't have a clue about cleaning the top grates. Enjoying your blog very much!

  4. Have you tried soaking the stove grids in Coke? Restaurants use it on pans to get burned on stuff off and we use it to clean battery posts in the car...so it might work.

    ReplyDelete
  5. That’s a shame that someone was too lazy to clean the oven! You might try an SOS or Brillo pad on the racks. Maybe ceramic/glass stovetop cleaner. I have never used it for that but I used it to get some nasty crud off of an iron-%I had tried everything but nothing worked—on a whim, tried that—took all the crud off beautifully. Good luck!

  6. How I keep my oven racks shiny like new: In a large sink, fill with hottest water you can, add good amount of Dawn liquid, soak racks in it. Use one of those handmade nylon net scrubbers, or green scrubbers and everything comes off.

  8. I've tried, with great success, putting stove top bits and oven racks into a trash bag, pouring in some ammonia, tying it shut and let it sit over night. The crud should wipe right off. I have also poured straight ammonia on the stove top, it had a rim, placing a trash bag over the top and letting it sit over night or all day. It stinks but it will take the crud off. If there was anything that didn't wipe off, I used a popsicle stick to budge it off.

That Bronze White is so beautiful! My vsm collecting days have waned but I'd make an exception for a Bronze. (Or a Singer 222, or......

    2. Me too surprised others didn't mention it. It worked for me. It was great on the oven's glass door and other areas where oven cleaner can't be used. I put a glass pan of ammonia in the oven overnight and all the crud just wiped off in the morning.

    3. I do the Ammonia thing too. Works like a charm.

    4. Yep! Ammonio and a trash bag is what we used when we had to pass 'white glove' inspections to move out of (military) base housing back in the day. Just be sure to double bag and to put the bag(s) in an old washtub -- NOT the bathtub; it will ruin the finish if it leaks! Ask me how I know that one .. . .

  10. Oh, Bonnie the Quiltville Inn is coming together so beautifully. What a GORGEOUS and GRAND home she is. Wish I didn’t live so far away (Colorado). My mother taught me a trick with the oven racks and it might help you. She would take a cup of straight ammonia and put it into a large heavy trash bag and put the racks inside, tie it shut, and let it set in the bathtub overnight. Rinse, and they were clean as a whistle. There was no heavy scrubbing on her part. This might work for the grates too. Thanks for everything you do.

  12. I've put oven racks and stove top parts on a heavy duty garbage bag with a dish of straight ammonia. Seal tightly and put outside overnight. The ammonia should soften the crud and help it come off without too much scrubbing. You can do the same thing with the oven, a dish of ammonia and close the door! Hope this helps!
Love seeing how you are transforming Quiltville Inn!

  13. Bonnie, use washing soda for the oven burners..you can find it in the detergent aisle in a box. My mother swore by it when we were cleaning and it works great.

  15. The best trick I learned from an Amish woman to clean oven racks is to put them out on the grass overnight and let them sit until mid morning. Works like a charm. There is a bit of science behind why it works. Overnight, enzymes that the grass produces work to break up those stuck on bits and the dew on the grass loosens them up makimg them easy to clean.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Time to get a self cleaning oven, IMHO! I absolutely loathe cleaning ovens. You are a better woman than I. Ammonia should do the trick as others gave mentioned but it needs time to work.

  18. Having a family member who does the family's genealogy is a TREASURE for your family! Place your oven racks outside on the grass overnight.....something about the morning dew makes getting off that grim much easier. My Mother taught me this. I hate to use any sort of chemical and try to use natural. At times, I have had to resort to those Brillo steel wool pads. LOVE my old tooth brushes for hard to get areas. QUILTVILLE INN is a beauty! I can see your vision....THANKS for sharing! I love old homes...

  20. The ammonia in a bag works to loosen the gunk off grates. Then to get the left on gunk use a pumice stone. Pumie scouring sticks. Sold at Walmart in cleaner aisle.

  23. Hi, Bonnie. I also use the ammonia in a bag trick. Place the racks, the dripper pans, and anything else that comes apart in the garbage bag, pour in about a quart of ammonia, seal up tightly with a twist tie. Then gently slide the whole thing into a second garbage bag and tie it up a second time. It saves on leaky messes and helps hold the smell. I do all this outside and leave for 24 hours. I place all of it in the bathtub, tear bags open, rinse ammonia down the drain. Any remaining gunk is usually soft and just wipes off. I place an old towel in the bottom of the bathtub before the garbage bag , to protect the surface from scratches. Good luck with the cleaning.

  24. OMG! I have the same sewing “desk. “ my mom bought me a Singer Fashion Mate for 8th grade graduation in 1969. Shortly after, we got this desk at a garage sale. It was antiqued green, very popular at the time. I’m ashamed to say we threw the old white rotary machine in the trash. My brother in law retrofitted the hole and put my Singer in. Years later I painted it white and put in in the nursery. In the eighties I saw one in original condition in a used furniture store. Shortly after, I saw one going down the freeway in the back of a pickup truck. In the late nineties, I had it stripped and stained to match dark rosewood living room furniture. We moved five years ago, and the edge of the top was crushed. Luckily, it was expertly repaired and stained a lighter tone. It is solid walnut, I was told. Thinking of seeing of my vintage Necchi SuperNova will fit in it. Glad to learn it’s from the 1920s, and was probably sold by White. Elaine, if you know any more about it, please PM me.

  31. I agree with All8. We put the racks at cetera and a heavy duty plastic garbage bag, pour in a cup or so of ammonia, let it sit overnight and the black wipes off the next day.

I'm really enjoying the progress you're showing on the Inn. Thank you.

  34. Hi Bonnie....
Stove/oven.... take parts that need cleaning... put them in a trash bag, put trash bag on a tray of some kind. Put about 1/2 ammonia in bottom of bag... seal it up tight.... let sit overnight, outside or in garage. In morning take out (hold breath) clean up... dirt and grime will scrub right off. Love this... use this method quite often.

  35. If you have an Ace hardware store anywhere around, they carry an Ace brand of Janitorial Strength formula of Ammonia. It contains 10% ammonium hydroxide. No rinse performance. Meets commercial and institutional specification. It comes in 2 sizes. I usually buy the gallon size. It is stronger than grocery or big box store ammonias. I use it to clean all sorts of things, mostly when I mop my lineoleum floors. Fumes are strong.

  36. We own rental property and I have cleaned many dirty stoves and ovens. I have used the ammonia method but something else that works is to boil them in water with a lot of liquid fabric softener. No stinky fumes.

  37. Bonnie, I’ve gotten burned on gunk from my stove liners EASILY - use 1 (I used 1/2 for my 2 gallon bag) cup of ammonia in a heavy plastic bag & putting in the racks. Seal the bag & set outside overnight. The FUMES from the ammonia turn the hard grease soft & you are able to use a scrubby to EASILY get it off. HONESTLY, it really works!!!

  38. Hello everyone out there, I'm here to share my unexpected miracle that happened to me through the help of Dr OKHUELEGBE. I was happily married with two kids; we lived together as one because we both loved each other. All of a sudden, my husband started acting funny and started keeping late night. I took out time to know what was actually going on and realized that he was cheating on me. Later on, he told me that he cannot continue with me. I pleaded with him but he never listened. The worst part of it was that he left me and my two kids with noting to hold on to. But there was nothing i could do to stop him or bring him back to me. I work so hard to pay the kids school fees and other responsibilities for good three years. I cry all day and night because I didn't know what to do to have my husband back to me until this fateful day I read the post from one Mrs. Victoria testifying how the great spell caster helped her to get her ex back. I just wanted to try my luck because I never believe it will work but i said let me give it a try. I contacted the great spell caster and he told me not to worry that my husband will return to me in no distance time after he must have finished casting the spell, which i will get back my husband. The unbelievable happened on Sunday when I got a call and I was so surprised to hear my husband’s voice apologizing to me that he is so sorry for all his Wrong did, telling me he is coming back home to fix all the pains and hardship he brought upon me. Wow! I really appreciated the great work of DR. OKHUELEGBE. I will always acknowledge your "FABULOUS WORKS" and there is nothing i could say than to tell the whole world about my miracle. So, if anyone is out there reading this post and you have similar issue like this, worry no more Dr. OKHUELEGBE is there for you, he can also offer any type of help like Reuniting of marriage and relationship, Curing of genital herpes and all types of Diseases, Court Cases, Pregnancy Spell, Spiritual protection and lot's more. You can contact him on drokhuelegbelovespell@gmail.com

  42. Hi Bonnie,
Great hints here for cleaning your gunky oven, I will be trying them too.
I use bi-carb soda on the oven door glass with a squirt of good dish-washing liquid. Smear it around to mix the two together right out to the edges & corners. Using a sponge or your gloved finger (so not to scratch glass) rub extra grimy areas, a bit like finger painting!! Leave it sit for an hour or two then sponge off with hot soapy water. Repeat if necessary.
I also use bi-carb on stove top with an old toothbrush to get into any corners and crevices. I sprinkle it on dry & wet the toothbrush. You can also spray the top with white vinegar first then sprinkle the bi-carb & scrub with very tightly rolled up old pantyhose, amazing results.
Bi-carb will also remove food stains from laminex/melamine bench tops with just a damp finger rub, it deodorises cupboards, fridge etc, just put a small bowl in the fridge & it absorbs odours. Can be sprinkled on carpet before vacuuming to deodorise. Add it to the water you are using to wash floors or clean anything. Add a handfull to clothes washing & halve the detergent used, put white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. It is cheap, natural, doesn't pollute & is edible. I have not found anything it will not clean.
I love everything you are doing at Quiltville Inn. Sooo much fun finding all those fabulous antiquey pieces of bric-a-brac and furniture. Thank you for sharing your journey.

  45. I hope you had a relaxing day, today. The ammonia should work, or possibly white vinegar. After spraying and wiping down the racks a couple times, then I use a brillo/SOS pad, green scrubby, etc. to get them clean. You might try something like doTerra OnGuard, or Melalueca SOL Guard for cleaning them all down, especially when done getting the crud off.

After being in relationship with markiss for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that never believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I mailed the spell caster, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there. 47. Hi, Bonnie. I'd recommend checking with the manufacturer of the stove first, to see if they recommend a way to clean the grids. If they are cast iron, you can strip them back to "unseasoned" by putting them in a garbage bag and spraying with oven cleaner (spray right into the bag). I've stripped cast iron skillets this way; you may have to "season" them again afterward.

Then I simply scrub with a green scouring. It all the baked on grease cleans off easily. Not even tough on my old fingers.

  56. I put the grates and shelves into hot water in one of those heavy duty large black garbage bags with your dish soap, tie it off with a knot, and put it out in the sun on a hot day on cement or driveway that will radiate the heat for the day, the hotter the day, the better, then when the suns gies down I collect and scrub clean.

  59. My name is Miranda from USA My boyfriend and I were happy as far as I could tell and I never thought that we would break up. When his cousin died in a tragic car accident he went back to UK for a week to be with his family. I could not go because I was in the middle of entertaining out of town clients for work. He did not seem to be upset that I could not go so I let him be. The next thing that I know, he reconnected with an old friend from high school that he had a crush on years ago and they started to have an affair! I had no clue what was going on until a month after he came back from UK.He proceeded to see both her and I until I caught him texting her one night. I confronted him and he told me the truth about what happened. We broke up and went our separate ways. Neither of us fought for our relationship. I was angry and decided not to be upset about it and just keep it moving. Then after about a month of not speaking to him I became sad. I wanted him to tell me that he wanted to be with me and not her. I contacted Dr.Zack Balo for a love spell and he totally helped me! he was able to get him to miss me to where he wanted to get back together again. He had a lot of regrets and felt bad for not fighting to keep me and for cheating in general. He values our relationship so much more now and we are together now! You can also get your lover back with the help of Dr.Zack Balo contact him through his website: https://wiseindividualspell.webnode.com/ email address: wiseindividualspell@gmail.com Or you can call him +13203967742 THANKS.
