Mornings are meant for being outside -

That is for those who are willing and able to leave their sewing machines and projects for just an hour or so - and do something that is good for body, mind and soul -

Saturday's walk up Bear Branch road provided us with a glimpse of mid summer -

Different things are blooming in mid-July, and we were out to beat the heat.

Creeks burbled on by.

Saturday was brought to us by the color purple!

And periwinkle! My favorite.

Chicory is putting on quite a show along the roadsides and ditches. I love this color so much. 

Along fence lines -

This color.  It's everything!

So peaceful and serene.

Just gotta love a long and winding dirt road in the middle of nowhere.  I'd rather be here than any city.

And a bit of Tula during Saturday's lunch on the porch.

All gathered together, enjoying the day.

Sunday's hike up to Grayson Highlands proved to be pony-less.  

This time of year they are often up at higher elevations in search of shade.

My own theory is that when summers get busier with tourists and hikers, that the ponies simply say "enough!" and they go further afield.  I don't blame them.

We had a great hike, regardless!

There was one lone rhodie bush barely blooming.

Yep - about done for the season.

It was a gorgeous blue sky morning!

We were back at hte inn by 11:30am with still a whole day of sewing ahead of us.

We wound up our weekend with a relaxing fire pit last evening. The weather was grand, and I love winding down of a busy weekend into just sitting and talking - with some s'more making on the side for those so inclined.

Yes, both Zoey and Mabel are ther with us - and if you look at the far right you'll see a curious Tula Tallulah Lou on the walkway.

As the daylight departed and darkness began to take over, there were abundant fireflies in the woods just beyond the grass.  They twinkled to perfection.

What a great end to a busy weekend!

This is underway.

It's 109'' X 116''.  It's huge.

I ended up piecing a backing in tans and taupes - going out to buy 15 yards of one thing? I looked at what is available around me and no one had that volume - it would take 2 matching bolts.

All of my mom's neutrals are thrifted, gifted and gleaned. There are shirts and scraps and other things that came her way that she worked in, so having ONE thing as the backing just didn't seem to fit the style of the quilt either, so I pulled together yardage I had that would work within the beige/tan/taupe colorway.

And I'll share more through the coming week.
