So I thought it was best to take photos of what was going to happen to the edge of the quilt before I bound it.
I think you can see here that I basted close to where I was going to be trimming, and then used a ruler to square the corners and trim the edges straight.
In this view here - I am losing half of every-other hexie - but there is enough float of background fabri beyond the flower border that it works.
I had done a knife-edge binding on my own hand-quilted hexie quilts, but with machine quilting there was no way to stop 1/4'' before the outside edge of the quilt without leaving starts and stops visible - and starts and stops can get in the way.
I wanted binding to encase all of the stops and starts - and decided to go with a straight edge binding.

I quilted with a golden tan thread in an edge-to-edge design called Radicchio by Urban Elementz.
Yes I still love my Sew Q Laser for doing things like joining lengths of binding on the diagonal!
But it's my Singer 201 machine that always has the walking foot at the ready for all of my bindings. That machine is a power house! Click to Play:
It is such a heavy beast!
And it's not that I used an extra heavy batting - it's just Hobbs 80/20.
On and ready for hand stitching to begin.
This is going to take a while!
But it's a great finish - and I love feet up hand stitching time in the evening. It can take as long as it needs.
Is she stretching out for that one line of railing shade?

That was so smart to make the edges of your mom’s hexie quilt straight instead of trying to follow the angular hexie edges. I was very curious to see how you were going to handle that! So glad to see you still use a vintage sewing machine for the binding. I am still just sewing with my vintage machines but have been considering adding a new machine (like a Juki). That binding is perfect…I am pretty sure I had that same fabric a long time ago. It was one of those fabrics that went with everything and got used up quickly. The fabric collection that Cotton to Quilts is offering looks gorgeous! Wow!
Ohhhh I sure hope your mama changes her mind. It has turned out so beautiful! And what a nice way to finish her quilt.... together! I read somewhere that we should act our age! But I've never been this age before... so how am I to know how to do that! Hugs Bonnie...
Bonnie, do you ever use a glove (such as Machingers) to help you when attaching the binding? I see you don't here. It's a beautiful quilt and a treasure.
One summer we took an RV trip out west... I can't remember what state we were in but all of the pronghorn were laying in the shade of the telephone poles (Like Tula!) as it was the ONLY shade... there would be 4-5 sitting/laying in the shade line of each pole. IT was very cool as it was a great way to see the Prong Horn that we had never seen before! LOVE Hamilton Gardens. Thank you for the gift-away opportunity!
I love the quote!! Today my daughter has a job interview, for her first job. Fingers crossed!! Other than that, we are trying to get back into a normal routine. I have about 2 weeks of summer break left, so I am going to try & finish up the patriotic projects that I was working on before my step-mom passed away. Such a crazy summer. I hope the new group has fun this weekend, & am glad that they beat the rain in! :) Happy quilting!

I enjoyed seeing your beautiful quilts today at the Hall of Fame. My husband took me for my birthday on a 2 hour drive to see them. Bonnie yo u inspired my vintage machine collecting about 7 years ago- I now have a 301 set up for applying my bindings with a walking foot and seam guid3 just where I want it, a thread under 3/8" seam allowance that works just right for me!

ReplyDeleteYes, both boys have a hand quilted hexie from me. This one is my mom's though it will come back to me eventually. Hopefully not for a long time!
