The Cat's Meow!

I'm not sure what it is about quirky fabric combinations - they make me giddy with pleasure!

Do you see the partial cat face in this block?

While pulling neutrals out of the string bin for the light side of my wonky log cabin blocks - this piece made me laugh and think "Do I dare!" Of course I do!  And in it went!

These are the things I hope bring a smile to people's faces long after I am gone - if the quilt survives that long.

And until then - if it makes ME smile, all the better.

It's as if that partial cat face is saying "I spy with my little eye....."

We had some really weird weather roll through late yesterday afternoon and into the evening.

Things like - loud rolling thunder that rumbled for a long long time along with some lightning with drenching rain.

It's weird for January - and yet I know that California is seeing a lot more of this than we are here.

This morning there were snow flurries at dawn - and I don't think we are going to go above freezing today. More snow is on its way with a predicted 2''.  We'll see.  Right now it's not doing anything.

Binding is happening on my wonky log cabin and I love it!

While most of the fabrics in this quilt came from my recycled shirt stash, the neutrals were bumped up by random "go-withs" from the neutral string bin because neutral plaids are not all that interesting by themselves.

The binding fabric has been in my stash quite a while, and I love a good printy-stripe.

We settled in to watch the NCIS 3-part crossover episode between NCIS DC, Hawaii and LA. It was the perfect binding binge!

I've made it about half-way on the second side.

This is sure going much faster than the knife-edge hexie binding I just finished!

Chicken veggie soup with cabbage!

With this kind of weather it is definitely soup season and I made a big pot so I'll have easy leftovers through the weekend.

It's not really a recipe - I started with 4 leftover baked chicken drumsticks in the crock pot, covering them with water to cook until all of the meat fell off the bones.

I strained the broth from everything and let it chill to separate the fat while I deboned and chopped the meat after cooling.

I put all of the veggies I wanted (onion, celery, carrots and chopped cabbage) in the crock with the de-fatted broth, added the chicken back in, threw in some spices and garlic along with a can of diced tomatoes and a bit more liquid.

It turned out SO good!

Almost ready!

The remainder of my day was spent drawing graphics and taking step-out photos and writing text for Monday's Unchained PDF pattern release.

Yes!  There will be a pattern and fabric roll gift-away!

So check back here on Monday and get your entries in.

This quilt is a lot easier than it looks.  And the string piecing is *optional* If you don't want to cut your background from string pieced units, you can just cut your neutrals to size and away you go.

I'm including traditional methods for the square-in-a-square units, but also providing a page of paper piecing templates you can print and do that way if you desire.

The only thing in this quilt that didn't come out of the Scrap User's System - the only yardage I used - was for the inner green border and the green binding.

Sew much fun!

*NOTE*  If anyone can name the pantograph on this quilt it would be so appreciated! I can't remember - it was quilted on my old CompuQuilter and I don't have all of my old designs loaded from zip files into the IntelliQuilter yet.  I think it's an UrbanElementz design. Thank you!

*UPDATE*  Thanks to Liz - we have the answer to the mysterious pantograph I couldn't remember the name of - it's Tealights by UrbanElementz.com.  Thanks Liz!

  1. The quilting pattern on the winky lot cabin is perfect for it. At first, very fast glance I thought it was Baptist fan, but, well perfect.

  2. I, too, love leaving little surprises in my quilts. I bought a yard of Waldo fabric years ago, and I often hide a small Waldo in my quilts.

  3. Wow, that soup looks fabulously delicious!!! I have to try that myself. I too love cabbage in soup. I make a cabbage soup with the leftover ham bone from a smoked ham, and cut up any of the ham still left on the bone. I use low sodium chicken broth, and put in carrots, celery, onions, and potato. Sometimes I even add gnocchi . And lastly a whole cabbage diced up. Mmm, delicious. I've got a ham bone in the fridge waiting for me to make soup again. I make a huge pot of soup and use the small take out soup containers from the Chinese restaurant to freeze individual portions. It's always my go to for a hot lunch or instead of a veggie side dish at dinner.

  7. We are daring to drive the back road to LaGrande today. Meeting up with dea
rold friends 2 days before my 66th Birthday. Life is fun if you take a chance to enjoy it 😊. Love an impromptu meet up. Stitching after I send this Comment. Cute Kitty face. The only kitties allowed at my house are on fabric, not sitting on my quilts. Happy Froday, the 13th.
