A Blue Ridge Beauty Kind of Day!

20170512_140107
It’s raining.

It’s day number THREE of raining.

But we don’t mind – we can put the yardwork on hold and gather together and sew our hearts and brains out, build new friendships, strengthen old ones and have a roaring good time sewing up the scraps instead, all comfy inside!

Yesterday’s Blue Ridge Beauty class was sponsored by the Friendship Quilters of Linthicum and the Eternal Quilters of Glen Burnie, and held at Christ Lutheran Church in Millersville.

A full day of scrap happy fun working with simple units such as the 4-patch and half square triangle, but oh so many ways to do them!

I heard from many that they learned things that they didn’t know before, and that makes me so happy.  If that’s the case, I am doing my job.

Workshops are LESS about the quilt we are making, and MORE about the techniques that will be used in future quilts down the road, things that make us better at a craft we love so dearly.

The vintage machines were plenty!

Their modern counterparts humming along as well!

The Essential Triangle Tools were getting a work out!

Notice the Ruler Sticker pointing to the correct measuring line?  My students and I are loving these! You can reposition them around the ruler many many times before the sticky gives up, and they leave no residue.

There are still some available in the Quiltville Store and I’ve got more on order and they should be in any day.  I’ve loved sharing these with my students in class to try them out.  Thumbs up all the way around!

And always remember – the line you are measuring with goes ON the fabric.  Not on the mat above (or below.)  Get the line ON the fabric so you aren’t short cutting yourself on your strip or unit size.

Just goofing off!

Ursula made me this little wreath for the cabin with the leftover bits of blue that were too narrow for string piecing!  It made a cute hat!  This will hang in the half-bath on our next trip up to VA.

Uhoh!!  Time to call it a day!

Carole was kind enough to loan me her machine last night so I could get some sewing donw on my Rolling Stone blocks.  I went NEW SCHOOL with a modern Bernina and had fun stitching on it.

But I knew it was time to hit the hay when THIS happened to the last block I was working on.  Yep.  Time to say good night at this point.  More sewing on these from home.

My last workshop is today.  Time has flown so fast!  It’s day 9 and we’ve got Cathedral Stars from the Free Patterns tab up on deck in Lintthicum and when the workshop is over, I’m pointing Moby towards home and driving as far as I safely can tonight so my drive home tomorrow is that much shorter.

I’d rather spend my Mother’s Day at home than spending 8 hours driving down I-95 in one long trip.

Time to get the contents of my hotel room packed up, loaded up, and get on over to the workshop location!

And yes – it’s still raining.  Which brings to mind:

Quiltville Quote of the Day!

Some people dance in the rain. Others just get wet in the storms they have created for themselves.

Learn to dance in the rain!

  3. Bonnie,

Thank you for mentioning when you have workshops with openings. I am self employed too, so my time is really limited, but I am keeping my eyes open for a workshop I might be able to make.
