Quilting, Walking, Baby Goats & More!

I've got goals!

And those goals include getting out for walks/hikes with the dogs in the morning before the day gets to warm through the summer.

You want to talk about lush and green?  Come to Southwestern Virginia - this kind of green runs through my blood and settles in my bones and I can't get enough of it.

It may have looked sunny and summery, but those clouds would soon gather and bring us a mid-afternoon downpour.  Another good reason for not putting off walks until later.

Besides.  It got hot.

Up to the state line!

Yes, too hot!  Walks must come earlier.

Two girls on the side porch during brunch.

We can call them the clean up crew - they'll hoover all of the crumbs dropped during meal time!

And just in case you think I haven't been sewing -

This is what is going on behind the scenes.

The Hubster is in Kentucky for an archery shoot this weekend, so it's just been me and the dogs since Wednesday noon.  We've been shifting my own routine around - I'm taking them with me in the morning where they can spend some time in the QPO, some time with the ladies on the porch, some time walking - and then early afternoon I take them home to do their dog thing -

And I'm working from home in the afternoon hours, heading back to the retreat around 5pm for evening activities and girl time.

These are ready to sew all the corners on, and will go into a current behind-the-scenes project.

I like to arrange small units ready-to-sew on rulers to transport them back and forth from the cutting area to sewing machine.  Do you do something similar?

Kathy the bartender has mad skills! LOL!

5 o'clock somewhere came right at 5 o'clock!

The afternoon rain had cooled everything down just right - especially nice since we are still waiting for the circuit board for the Mitsubishi split unit in the kitchen.  Part of the house is without a/c!

Look who came for our evening entertainment!

Martha brought Cookie over to say hi!

There is nothing so sweet as baby goat kisses!

Taken yesterday morning -

The mountain laurels are just SO FULL this year.  Everything has been abundant - from the apple trees, dogwood, daffodils, rhododendron, lilacs and now these.  Is this sign of a hard winter to come?  I hope not!  But I am loving this.

Look at these clusters!

Another variety from out the back door -

This one is more pink.

Nature's beauty just can't be beat!

Todays plan - an EARLIER hike down Bear Branch Road, and back to the house before 11 for a top-your-own pizza brunch.

And MUCH sewing ahead!

What does your Friday look like?

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Look for and find happiness in the little spontaneous joys of life.
They are everywhere.
Don't let them go unnoticed!

Have a wonderful Friday, everyone!

  2. Last summer - during the overly hot, humid, steamy part of Minnesota summer, we started going for our daily walk at around 7:15am. We are retired and could go anytime during the day and had been, usually sometime later in the morning, but we started going during the cooler and shadier part of the day (after all, by 7:15 the sun has been up nearly 2 hours already). We came to love going at that time so much that we went at the same time all winter as well - even though it was dark and sometimes VERY cold at that time for about 2 months lol. We checked the temp, dressed accordingly (boots - always, it's Minnesota - hats, mittens, snowpants, layers of sweatshirts and sometimes a winter vest + a safety vest) and never missed a day all winter. It was nice to have our walk out of the way, a great way to start the day! It didn't matter what else we had going on the rest of the day - our walk was completed. (Sometimes retirees have very complicated schedules and includes procrastination lol).

  3. I'm shop hopping in south central Wisconsin. Their annual shop hop began on the first and, since it's my birthday weekend, this is what I choose to do to celebrate. Today I have 9 shops on my list before I head to my resting spot for the night.
I took a walk around the area where I stayed last night, had some breakfast and am killing time until I can wander on for the day.

  5. Lucy and I started to walk at 7 am (2.5 mi) in the morning before it gets too hot and 8 pm at night (1.5 mi,). I have to make sure she doesn't burn her paws on the hot side walks. The last couple of days when it was still in the mid/high upper 80s, I decided not to walk. I ha e been diligently working on a top for my daughter and can't wait to get it done so I can start on Bear Branch. I wish everyone a great weekend. At least the storms brought down the temps.

  6. It's a haircut day and pampering for this tired Grandma. Feeling older our 4th Grandchild Graduates HS tonight. I gotta drive 2 hours there and back, it will be dark and possibly raining coming home. Not my favorite thing. Wishing I was stitching! Happy weekend, that Mountain Laurel is so pretty!

  8. I love the photo of your scrappy pieces all cut, lined up and ready to sew! How fun to be able to sit down and put those pieces through the machine!

  9. Oh, Bonnie, such fun to see your goings-on. Thought of you last night at our guild fundraising auction. One of the items was a beautiful fantastic OMG I love it Singer treadle machine in a coffin top style cabinet. Researchers said it was made in 1900. I think it went for some dreadfully low price of approximately $75.00. Twenty years ago I would have snatched it up, but now I'm downsizing. I thought fondly of your lovely machine at the Inn.

  10. Hi Bonnie - just going back to your comments regarding the price of gasoline - in Australia we are paying on average $2/litre - 3.8 litres per gallon = $7.60/gallon or US$5.50+/gallon. Still - we are so much better of than the people in Ukraine.

  11. I just got gifted a whole bunch of triangles. I was going to sew them into HST's but maybe I'll wait to see what you are going to do with yours.
