Happy Spring, everyone!
Today I’m happy to be taking a little break from my own world, and share in the excitement of a friend and also C&T Author, Diane Knott of Butterfly Threads Quilting!
Diane’s new book, Scrap Quilt Secrets is just being released, and I have been privileged to hold an early release copy in my hot little hands.
Diane is a scrappy girl, right after my own heart and I absolutely love how she has pulled together all of the wonderful elements that make a scrap quilt spectacular with a check list of 6 “Secrets” that make quilts sing!
S is for Style!
C is for Contrast!
R is for Repetition!
A is for Accent!
P is for Palette
S is for Selvages! (SELVAGES?!?) Yes! SELVAGES! There are quilts using selvages in the book.
Oh my goodness, Let’s Get Scrappy!
This is my brain. This is my brain on SCRAPS! (Remember that commercial from the 80s with the egg, and then the egg in the fry pan? Just add fabric for me, it’s my drug of choice!)
How can I pick just one quilt to talk about? I love them all…..those applique flowers on the text print border for Crazy Daisy have me swooning!
But I know me. And the one quilt that I could go right to my strip bins and start creating RIGHT NOW is this one:
Detour!
As in: You need to stop doing what ever you are supposed to be doing, and make this quilt RIGHT NOW!
Diane’s caption for this photo reads:
Let’s be honest – sometimes you just have to buy what’s left on a bolt of fabric. It doesn’t matter why; it just happens. I bought this blue fabric because of the unusual shade of blue and the tiny check pattern. It happened to be on sale, too. Using this accent fabric allowed my huge variety of scraps to play nicely together. Without an accent, this quilt could look messy and confusing.Go find one of those special pieces of fabric, either in your stash or at the quilt shop, and build a scrap quilt around it!
Thanks for the permission, Diane!
In my own quilt-making I call these “one piece of yardage accents” that find their way through the quilt a CONSTANT within the block or quilt, and I agree. These accents or constants, whether of one specific color family, and still scrappy, or of one piece of yardage used throughout the quilt will really draw your eye so that the design stays sharp and crisp and the entire quilt doesn’t turn to mush.
So guess what we are going to do? We are going to have a little Give-Away for a copy of Scrap Quilt Secrets! The winner will be drawn on Friday Evening, March 25th!
Good luck, everyone!
Here are the other participants for the blog hop, each hosting their own giveaway and choosing their own favorite quilt from Scrap Quilt Secrets. Be sure to visit them all, starting off with yesterday’s kick off on the C&T Blog!

Quiltville Quote of the Day!
Vintage quilt with tiny stars shared by Katie in our workshops in Lansing this past weekend. It may be completely shredded in places from years and generations of hard use, but it sings with the things that Diane Mentioned above! It’s got Style, Contrast, Repetition, Accent, and Palette!
In my book it has two other important V’s VALUE (light and dark so you can see what’s going on in the blocks) and VARIETY! Variety is that thing that keeps us coming back to make more blocks. It’s more fun when they are different from each other.
Have a great Tuesday, everyone!
bonnie great minds think alike!!! i love this scrappy with those little blue squares, although mine might be CHEDDAR or BLACK or ORANGE!!! or maybe neon pink? lime? possibilities are endless and that is what scraps are all about....would love to have this book, so pick me, pick me...LOL
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie, Will you be selling this book on Quiltville.com, or Diane have her own website? I am a scrap addict, too. I think my bricks would be black. I am wanting to make a smaller Perkimon Daydream with a black center, instead of the yellow/red. I love that pattern, and have a one completed, but would like to take on another. Thank you for this offer. Paula in Omaha
ReplyDeleteThis looks like an awesome book. Thanks for the chance to win it!
ReplyDeleteSaw you were in Michigan. Love to have you visit our state but you always pick the most beautiful parts of it in the worst time of year. Traverse City in the summer can't be beat. Would love to win your book give away.
