Whittling Down The Binding Queue

Stuff is moving faster in the binding queue than I thought it would!

I'm on side TWO of my Huka Falls Binding -

We had quite the discussion over whether I would choose a turquoise, aqua or neutral binding when I was showing the newly quilted and off the machine quilt to Christ's Christmas in July group.

There are many factors that come in to play here - if I want a "Dead Stop" at the edge of the quilt I will often use something contrasting and darker -

But in this case:

I chose a neutral with a slightly bluish cast to it that featured little turquoise and lime green doo-dads.

Here I am oining stripes end-to-end on the diagonal using the Sew Q Laser to keep my stithing line straight and true.

Yep! This is the ticket for THIS quilt.

It all depends.

A darker binding would frame in the flying geese points at the edge of the quilt, and I wanted them to have a floating appearance - I wanted the edge of the quilt to fade away, and the turquoise geese be the main focus.  So I chose a lighter binding this time.

I like how it is turning out.

2 sides and a hanging sleeve left to go.

Huka Falls will be ready as a PDF pattern release in January - Stay tuned for this one.  I'm getting stuff done ahead of time as I have a lot of travel coming up starting December with a sold out trip to England, and a trip to Australia in January - There is still room for you and a friend!

Come escape the winter snow, ice and cold with me in January.  Click to my tour page for more info.  Let's go!

Perhaps 3 evenings left to go on this?

I haven't shown photos of mom's completed hexie yet as we have had days of rain and I can't hang it out until the rain stops.  More rain today.  All day.  It's okay - I like the softer weather and the cooler temps. And we need the rain so badly.

I'll get a photo the first nice break in the weather we have. It's coming.

These are back in production!

Here is a little video of block assembly - short chains, webbing the block and just how I do things.  Click to Play:

Yes, of COURSE I cut out all my block parts with my Essential Triangle Tool!  Did you doubt it?

All of the half-square triangle pairs are cut already right sides together so I simply have to feed them through the machine.

The triangles for flying geese also stitch together easily and accurately if you do a simple test on your seam allowance first to be sure it is giving you the right result.

I'm not sure when the pattern release for this one will be - likely not this year as it is going to be a many-months-long hand quilting project.

But Ladder Star will be coming out in a few months - so you have that to look forward to.

Blue blocks are now done!

On to the red ones -

And yes! County Clare blocks are also growing on the side!

How are yours coming along?

Last minute goodbyes!

This is the scene that greeted me yesterday as I arrived at the inn - ladies were taking turns loading cars and some were just enjoying the last bit of porch time before heading home.

Thanks for a great retreat, ladies!

This afternoon the July Quiltvillians arrive.

I hope there is a break in the rain enough to just get their stuff to the porch and their cars parked in the lot below without them getting soaked.

The response to our Hamilton Gardens release yesterday has been phenomenal!  I can't thank you enough, and I am so excited that you are excited to make your own version while stitching down your scraps.

  1. What a great binding for Huka Falls! I love your explanations in your thought processes as well. Enjoy your soaking rains... we are getting some much needed cooling rain as well here in South Central Texas! Safe travels home to the retreaters, & I hope the new group can get settled in before the next deluge! I am still binding several small projects... & we're talking of going to see the new Twisters movie. Happy quilting! :)

  2. I've heard that there is some sort of "Zapper" at doorways that takes your thoughts away, which explains not remembering why we went into a room! LOL

  6. I can’t wait to see Huka Falls in full. I still can’t make out the actual pattern…and as far as your “quote for the day”…I couldn’t quilt laughing!!! That is a daily occurrence around our house!
