Under My Needle…erm…Hopping Foot!

20150708_154348
These are the moments that keep us humble!

Just when you think everything is going along swimmingly ---life throws in little speed bumps to cause us to slow down, to re-evaluate our attention span, to cause us to refocus our efforts, letting us know that we have not been paying attention to things we should be!

This was supposed to be a “load this quilt quickly and let it run while you are writing” kind of day.

HA!  Think again!

It started out by measuring the quilt so I could piece a backing.

I had the PERFECT fun fun fabric – scissors on a light pink background that will be so fun for this adorable quilt --

Only the quilt is 84” square and two widths of backing was just not enough to do the job.

So much for an easy one fabric backing!  What does Bonnie do in typical Bonnie fashion??

Piece a panel from left over pieces and parts!

Now, the piecing part was really fun, and my love of piecing and making things work were in high gear – but did I really have time for this?

Evidently, time was made.  It has to be done.

So there is another life lesson –sometimes we have to slow down, and enjoy the detour that is thrown in our path.  The result may actually turn out better, and much for fun and interesting than what we had originally planned.

Loaded on the machine…looks great, don’t you think?

((And that scissor fabric!  LOVE!))

Loving the quirky fabrics in this one!

Oh, on that fabric? I got an answer from Jinny!!

1990 –it has waited a long time to be used in this quilt!

((25 years?  How can that be?!))

1990 was the year that my son Jeff was born.

Pinwheel quilting, with pastel variegated thread!

And then:

SQUIRREL!!

Just not paying attention.  This is what happens when you are an ADD quilter ---with too many tabs open in your brain at any one given moment!  Luckily it was at the edge, and no fabric was damaged in the process of getting my hopping foot released from stitching itself in to the quilt.

Quilted and trimmed and ready for binding!

Yes, I love this little added bit!

And the fun fabrics used in it to get the job done.

Next up – BINDING!

I’ve chosen a raspberry stripe that will be really cute at the edge.

Today will be spent with more writing –and I’m looking forward to Quilt-Cam tonight at 9pm Eastern.  I’ll have pieces and parts cut and ready to stitch for those step-outs I need for the taping in Colorado in just a few weeks!

These will all be units from my Addicted to Scraps column blocks and we can revisit them while we sew and chat!

See you tonight!

  1. I thought I was the only person that ever did that. Talking to my husband now means stopping the machine and turning my head without so I don't feed the foot!

  2. i've accumulated 4 king quilts in the 'needs to be quilted pile, 2 more than allowed. this week has been slated for preparing backings and bindings. absolutely 'NOT' my favorite part of quilting. I'm dragging my feet and so not enjoying it. i'm trying to find inspiration in your backing post to move forth and finish. :>)

  4. That is a wonderful back. Because of the inspiration from you - I RARELY make a back that is all one fabric. It just doesn't "feel right" anymore! :) To say the least, I love scrappy backs and this last addition is just SO RIGHT!

  6. It's good to know how old that Jinny fabric is SEW glad your quilt has a happy ending. Such a cute combo of colors! I can hardly wait to see which Addicted to scraps block parts you will be making during QuiltCam. Stitching down Binding time while I watch tonight. July is flying by. Time doesn't stand still for any of us.

You are so funny Bonnie. Most people with your stature in the quilting community would never admit to a snag. You are such an inspiration. Elaine

  10. It's amazing how life running away and you think everything is flow, then you hit a speed bump making you slow down a little and you just pause for a minute to reflect. Wish I could join you live for Quilt cam but I have to go to work. At least I can watch it from the archive over the weekend. Have fun.

  11. Oh, that photo with the hopping foot askew brought back some not-so-good memories from the days when I was a longarm quilter. I'm glad that you weren't stalled by it for long and got your quilt finished. I love your pieced addition to the back. Must remember the set-on-point-strip for the back. Can't wait to see the front!

  13. Sometimes a problem can bring a wonderful answer! I like the backing so much better than if it were the scissor fabric only. Clever use of pieces.. I am think about making extras when I make a quilt top just to have them around 'in case' something like this would happen.

I have fabric 25 years old, and now don't feel as lame about it as I did :).
