Hello Saturday!
It seems we made it through Friday, but it was not an easy one.
The fact that my phone alarm was set for 3:15am was simply not enough to allow me to sleep peacefully the night before.
I kept waking up about every hour checking to make sure that I hadn't slept through the alarm, or that it hadn't gone off after all and we would be late for our 3:40am departure for the surgery center for Hubster Dave's right hand surgery.
Yes, the alarm was set correctly. Yes, it did go off. But I had given up around 2:45 and got up. What was the point of lying there with my mind racing anyway?
His surgery location turned out to be really nice - unlike hospital waiting rooms and patient areas, they have done everything they could to make this outpatient surgery center a comfortable experience for those on the waiting end, as well as for the patients inside.
The little TV had info on where our patient was at the time, be it pre-op, procedure, or recovery.
There were consultation rooms where the surgeon would come talk to family members or responsible party (ie: ME, though I'm not so sure on the responsibility aspect at this point!) and then we were called back when it was time to come help our loved one get dressed while they were trying to crawl out of effects of anesthesia.
Dave's procedure to remove a bone from his hand (from the top) and to perform a carpel tunnel fix (from the bottom) took about an hour and a half or so.
My comfy spot and hexies at hand.
I did finish getting all of the aqua hexies around this motif, and started in adding them to the second one - but when they called me back to come get him I didn't take a progress photo - it as all systems go to get the man home.
The funniest thing has been the nerve block they put in his arm above the elbow on his right arm. I literally could not feel the arm, could not wiggle fingers, couldn't do anything -
One of the things we "just do" is quote movie lines all of the time, and we fell right into The Princess Bride with the scene of "He's only mostly dead..." in reference to his arm.
This joke continued through the day off and on as he would try to move his arm, adjust his elbow on a pillow, and just couldn't do it.
Because it was "only mostly dead."
The good news is - this morning it is slowly waking up and he can move his fingers...
This was from the evening before when we decided a pre-birthday dinner was going to be easier for him to use a fork with his right hand, then try to have him do it after the surgery with his left.
He turns 65 tomorrow. How did we get here?
Oh, and this is the first time he was able to use his medicare to take care of this surgery - so there is that milestone too.
A bit blurry and too much light!
And not everyone is here - some were out on a quilt shop run, b ut these smiling faces are the Richmond Express gals, and they are troopers holding down the fort while I took yesterday off to play chauffer for a man who won't be able to drive for a while.
A few o us did get out on Thursday afternoon for a bit of a road hike down Bear Branch - oh happy spring!
It's great to see the cows again, and I can't wait for this grass to green up.
Moo!
Through hurricanes and ice storms this old cabin still stands....though trees are down everywhere as witness to what we've been through the past several months.
And yes! The daffies are blooming in the side yard beyond the Quilting Quarters windows at Quiltville Inn.
Yesterday afternoon's quick check on how things were going -
Binding, relaxing and wollie stitching happening in the Hen Den.
Sally is working on this yummy lovely -
All to say that no matter what life throws at us - the stitching must go on!
And you know what also must go on?
It's time to draw for our 3 winners in my Bloom gift-away!

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Prayers for good recovery for hubby. Biggest challenge ahead will be keeping on track, not to do things “ because it really feels good”. My hubby tried amputating right thumb and after a month or so kept pushing it because there were things to be done.
ReplyDeleteTake care of both of you.
Yep, Yep, Yep...Love the Quote of the Day!
ReplyDeleteHopefully Dave's arm, hand, and fingers are all awake now. Glad the surgery part is over. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Happy National Quilting Day, Jenny
Wishing a speedy recovery for the hubster. When I had wrist surgery they did the nerve block too (it was wonderful) but I kept hitting myself in the head!
ReplyDeleteWishing the hubster a quick recovery. I had the nerve block when I had wrist surgery (it was wonderful!) but I kept hitting myself in the head.
ReplyDeleteHappy Milestone Birthday to Dave. I just had my 65th last month. As you said life is an adventure and growing old is not for sissies. Speedy recovery Dave. Fran in Pa.
ReplyDeleteYour quote of the day is hysterical - and way too true! Love your sense of humor. Best wishes to Dave for recovery as well as his 65th birthday.
ReplyDeleteFeel better soon Dave! My goodness Bonnie, what will he do now? No bow hunting for a bit, no dishes (gloves work 😉), no driving (he’ll be on the tractor in no time!), but he’ll be company for you as you sew (!!!), and will only need help with a few things. Hang in there & have great weekend. Sending you good vibes from 🇨🇦 🪡
ReplyDeleteGlad the surgery is behind both of you and that the mostly dead arm is mostly alive again. It's a wonder they didn't call you back into surgery to do the stitching up! You could have hand-quilted the scar into a nice Baptist Fan pattern for him. Best wishes for a smooth recovery. Yea, Medicare! LOL
ReplyDeleteLove today's quote - but wish it wasn't so accurate !
ReplyDeleteI just read the blog about the cutting mats, so I am just now posting about mine. My large cutting mats are stored against the wall with boxes and old 4-H posters holding them upright. Because they are behind my ironing board they are difficult to get out and put back. We have to replace a desk floor mat occasionally because of cracks that become major holes. But the rest of the mat is still in great shape. I had my husband cut the good parts into smaller pieces. That is now what I use for cutting most of the time. It stands against the wall by itself and not behind other things. And there are no lines. I have used it for several years and have not noticed it dulling my blades.
ReplyDeleteWe have several weeks before daffodils herein Ontario so it's nice to see yours! Wishing your Hubster speedy healing.
