Yesterday was our first Split Nine-Patch workshop day and Debbie's Bitter Bees had it going on!
Being as Split Nine Patch is from the Free Patterns tab many got a head start on making half square triangles, and came with all of their 2 1/2'' square cut, sorted ready to share and go!
It didn't take long until there were a variety of layouts on design walls - playing with these blocks is the best part!

I love seeing everyone's scraps - Scrap quilts are like a catalogue of all of the fabrics that have come through their hands in their quilting lives.
Blocks are so simple they cover wall space in no time!
Busy happy hands and a humming featherweight!
The plan here is to have some all black/white and some with a red roses. I can't wait to see how this one works up.

The weather was so lovely that we filled the van with 7 of us who wanted to get out into some nature.

I love taking folks to this favorite spot on my walk - the "Oh, look at that!" from folks who haven't been here before makes it all so worth it.
And yes - this week the dogwoods have begun to bloom.

Evening feet up and hand quilting time -
I have moved mjy hoop to the LAST block in the second row. I'll start stitching on that one tonight.
There is just something about hand quilted texture.
It makes my heart sing!
Rain in the forecast for this afternoon - but this morning it's another lovely day.

Your hand quilting is so inspiring. I love hand quilting, whether it is an overall quilting pattern like the Baptist fan or more of a custom quilting. With custom quilting, I like to match my quilting thread to the block when possible. I feel that hand quilting is more forgiving to my quilitng mistakes than when I quilt on my domestic machine, even if it takes me so much longer to quilt by hand. I, too, quilt with a hoop in my lap.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been making the split 9 patch for years and completed several charity quilts with them. I now keep a project box of just the HSTs and squares to use as leaders and Enders. Going to retreat next week and I’m bringing LCR for us to play too.
ReplyDeleteWe love play Left Right Center with our grandson and kids. We do this when we go on our MN trip in the summer. We play with quarters and then the boys get to spend it on anything they want if they win. So fun!

ReplyDeleteAnd trying to get my son to mow the front half of the property , the back half is too saturated.
I want to make a handbag as my leather bag has gotten too heavy for me. A fabric one will be less. Also have a couple table runners in my head.

Hand quilting becomes a relaxing activity once you get used to it. I don't think machine quilting will ever become that for me. And the texture, especially after it's washed - - - cuddly, a warm hug from the maker.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter, who is not a Quilter, took a class & made a Split 9 patch with blues and tans. I got to quilt it for her using a Kisses Panto. Sew fun to remember that fun quilt. I have wanted to make one for myself to use that Panto again. Happy Fri-Yay. Stitching is on my agenda. Block construction continues...

ReplyDeleteI love the split 9 patch! I made a modified version in large king size for our bed. It’s my favorite quilt so far!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure many quilt blocks go by various names! As I was reading this, as I am making split nine patches as my RSC for this year, I was looking forward to seeing all the variations, which were wonderful! But my split nine patch uses the center block as not a half square triangle, but a solid square of whatever color group you are using! Lends itself to a different look.

I hope there is a lot of quilty inspiration over the weekend. I will definitely be putting the Split 9 Patch into my L/E line-up! I absolutely love the hand quilting, I wish I could.
