A Saturday Out And About!

While some of the ladies from Irene's Sewciologists made plans to either hit up Batiks Etc in Wytheville, others loaded up and headed out to beautiful downtown Galax, VA to visit the newly opened Quilts On Main!

YES!  We have another quilt shop for quilters to visit on this side of the Virginia border, and I couldn't be more thrilled!

I wish the owners all of the luck in the world - this area has been severely starving when it comes to quilt shops.  Without Batiks Etc - Wytheville only has Walmart.  Without Quilts on Main, Galax only previously had Walmart and Hobby Lobby.

The ability to support small individually owned businesses and see quilt shops thrive is something I am really excited about.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Quilts on Main!

And what did I get up to while the quilters went hither and yon?

I had a date with the Hubster in search of new reclining love seats.  Our 12 year old 2 love-seat set (Our living room is small, we don't have full length couches for a reason - they don't fit!)  was great - until it wasn't.

After so much use they became loose at the joints, padding going flat, seats sinking in, and it has been time for quite a while to switch them out so we can have somewhere comfortable to sit.

We dropped the old ones at Goodwill.

There is still some life left in them, and I'm sure they will be just right for someone on a budget. The living room at home now has lawn furniture to sit on until these area delivered:

Two of them arriving tomorrow!

(Lawn furniture it is for ONE MORE NIGHT.)

With that job done, and time to spare since the quilters were out and about, I hinted at some antique mall wandering since there are several close-together places in Abingdon.

The Antique Barn is a fun spot to stop and look around.

Quilts were few and far between, and what there was wasn't in really great shape -  tattered and torn seemed to be the theme of the day.

But you know what that tells me?  These quilts were loved and used hard.  I traced my finger along the quilting stitch lines, knowing just how long it takes to stitch each arc.

Worn out with the using - so many memories in each frayed patch.

Nine patches & Square in a Square blocks.

This quilt had a lot of "upholstery" type fabric in it. They were using what they could!

A string baby quilt!

At first I thought it was a log cabin, until I saw the seams corner to corner making an X in each "block."

Tattered, torn and tied!

Huge hexies.  Super fun!

Hearts & Gizzards!

Who remembers this 1960s print?  I DO!

There were a few machines -

But not as many as their used to be and prices have skyrocketed on them.

I do love the blue color!

Sweet singer 15!

Oh, NO!!

I don't see how jiggling all the things can be healthy at all.  LOL!

Vita Master?

I'd rather be sewing!

(Not to mention by this time I'm laughing at the carpet - that's a definite NO from me too!)

Aesthetically - YES!

Now this is something I can get behind!

And this pretty much sums up the attitude after hauling all 3 to the vet on Friday.

Random things I liked, but didn't buy.

If there were 12 I would have picked these up for the inn.  I love the tumblers in this little carrier. They remind me of my grandmother.

The "rest on its side" iron - pointy at both ends to get into ALL of those darts and pleats!

Perfect washer??  For whom??

NO THANK YOU!

(Oh, that carpet! LOL!)

This.  My childhood was this!

My dad had this album when I was little.  We loved the Smothers Brothers.

Antiquing done, we grabbed lunch at a BBQ place right in the middle of downtown Abingdon and headed back to the retreat to see what the ladies had been up to on their days out as well.

We ended the day on a high note at The Tavern in downtown West Jefferson for dinner on the town.

As to the traveling love seats - they will be delivered to the inn tomorrow where we will load them on to the trailer and haul them up the mountain.

There is no way the delivery truck could make it up our drive.  We'll get them as far as they can go, and we'll take it from there.

Last night's fire pit!

Evening chill comes quickly after sunset these days.  I'm not sure how many fire pit nights are left for us - but we certainly enjoyed gathering around the fire last night.

It's the last day of retreat for the Sewciologists today.  I know there are several who want to go on a long hike and the weather looks spectacular.  There will be quilts over the rail photo ops and as much sewing time as they can fit in before packing it all up and heading out tomorrow morning.

Is it any wonder that yesterday afternoon required a 2 hour nap?

And October rolls on!

I've placed the PDF pattern for Spider & The Fly  at 25% off in both the Quiltville Store and Quiltville Etsy Pattern Shop - no coupon needed!

The price is good through 10/31/22 and will revert back to full price on 11/1/22.

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Trust yourself.

You know more than you think you do!

Happy Monday, everyone!

  1. When I was a child we had one of those irons with two pointy ends. It was a dry iron with no steam holes. I think it might have been a Betty Crocker brand. We thought we'd really gone uptown when we finally got a steam iron! Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

  4. My mom still has that iron! I think I was about 4 (!) when I went into 'ironing training' by pressing my dad's handkerchiefs with that iron.

  5. Same here with the full size sofa issue. I have the 2 recliner love seats as well. Still kind of tight and I should trade one for just a recliner chair, but I like the extra room to the side when I am attaching binding during the winter months.

  6. funny to see tumblers. we had those when i was growing up. in fact, i asked my sister about them (thinking they were long gone) and she put aside a purple one for me. i loved drinking coke over ice in them. lots of well loved quilts. i think i'd rather see them well loved instead of pristine. sounds like a nice weekend. thanks for sharing. patti in florida
