Running for the Borders!

This was my day yesterday.

And if it looks like it was an easy choice - it wasn't!

I must have pulled 8 to 10 different combinations of fabrics from the stash cabinets as possible borders for my Churn Dash quilt - 

And I was ALMOST ready to give up when these two jumped out at me.

First the orange - but what to pair it with?

And then that wild raspberry tie-dye looking thing.

Sometimes it's hard to decide when it is a multi-color quilt top. I first thought BLUE!  But then no.  What about red?  (Note to self - I've done a lot of red lately, give it a rest!) 

I really didn't want a purple-purple.  And definitely not a green (See not to self above.  The same applies.)

Can I go with orange and raspberry?

Well why not!?

I think this will do!

All happy here - but what next?

The rest of the afternoon was spent also pulling backing fabrics.

I LOVED this green/yellow/rust/gray print.  But I had less than a yard of it.  It wasn't enough to use as borders. (And it's directional and a hard to match large scale print so piecing borders from it could look wonky unless you have enough yardage to watch the repeat.)

I had one long section of this mottled peachy/yellow with pink undertones and splotches used as the center panel.

A couple of other yellow prints flanked the green stripes and I was good to go.

why did this take longer than putting borders on?

This is before everything got a really good pressing.

I love the color combo in that green print.  But can you see what I mean about it being a bit harder to work with (Unless I had 8 yards for a backing?  Even then, I'd have to watch the repeat when piecing a backing because it could look really off.)

A favorite from 1981!

I remember - because I made a dress out of that same print in the pink colorway for my first date with the Hubster in May, 1981.  I bought the fabric at the local TG&Y.

This piece came in the scrap bags I recently received and I'm happy to include it in here with so many other oldie but goodies.

Nearing 5pm.  Time to go home.

I only got one row quilted.  The rest will wait for today. And then the war of what to bind it with will begin.

I'm sure Lola has some opinions.  LOL!

I spent last evening working on that (*&@#*&@ applique while Ivy told me about everything I was possibly doing wrong, and likely could do better.

A couple of more evenings.  Maybe by the end of the weekend.  And I'll be done.

PS.  If you notice the turned over laundry basket in the background - that's Zoey's toy basket and every evening she knocks it over, dumps all of her toys out and spreads them all over the living room.

It's an evening ritual!

Rain started pounding in the wee small hours last night, the sound of it hitting the metal roof above me waking me from a sound sleep. The rest of the night was intermittent dozing with my mind trying to let go of the sound and find my way back to rem.

We didn't even make it down to freezing.  We've got sopping soggy rain for the next couple of days, but freezing temps will arrive back over the weekend. I think we are officially entering the season of mud.

I know many of you are being pounded by yet another winter round of snow and ice and wind and yuck - hang in there!  Keep the home fires burning and quilt away while you can!
