Good Things Come in Red!

Who else gets all excited about New Year's gravel? LOL!

This big red beast came rumbling up behind the Quiltville Post Office (QPO) yesterday - and just in the nick of time.

This is actually something that we've been wanting to do for months - (okay 2 1/2 years since we bough the place!) and we had FINALLY had enough of the mud with all of the snow melt to do something about it.

Yesterday became the 4th favorite holiday of December: Winter Solstice, Christmas, Gravel Day, and New Year's Eve!

Not a bad way to end the year!

On the side drive!

The QPO sits on lower ground than Quiltville Inn and the surrounding yard, so all run off heads right toward the back door of the QPO.

There is ALWAYS a mud hole by the back cement pad, winter, spring, summer fall.

This should help greatly.

There us still some hand raking to do to get it where it needs to go, but it was sure fun watching that truck raise its hydraulics and let the gravel spill out the back end as it drove slowly in a circle around the parking area.

It made me think of when the boys were small, and how they loved to watch construction equipment and big trucks - calling EVERYTHING that resembled their small sand box toys a "TONKA".

"Mama!  Look!  It's a Biiiiiiiiiiiig TONKA, Mama!"  My heart got a squeeze in the remembering.

Okay, life must be pretty much in the slow lane for this to be the most exciting thing!  But gravel on a muddy drive and parking area is THE BOMB!

Bye bye mud!

I love how the old Fields Woolen Mill looks in this "snow's all gone!" winter photo.  Though not on our property, it stands there burned out and vacant - a symbol of days gone by in these parts.

And the other good thing that comes in red?  A sneak peek maybe?

This is just a bit of the next "behind the scenes" thing!

These are the things that make me giggle.

Yes, you CAN include a green and blue alien (or is it a slug?) as a neutral if the background is white!

You'll be seeing more of this project down the pipeline.  In a few weeks. So just hang on!

Sew Those Winter Blues Away!

Gather your blue and neutral scraps for an escapade of crazy easy sewing!

Small Blocks with Big Fun, guaranteed to chase your winter blahs far, far away!

Finished Quilt Size: Approximately 81'' x 95''

Yesterday's response to our new Winter Blues PDF pattern has blown me away!  All I can say is Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom and top of my heart.

At the end of this very strange and difficult year, there are still bills to pay.  it doesn't fill the gaps left from not traveling to teach and lecture, but it helps!  And I really can't thank you enough for your support by purchasing PDF patterns and items from the Quiltville Store.

The introductory price is good through Sunday, January 3rd, 2021 (YAY! 2021!) and will revert back to $12.00 the morning of January 4th.⁣
This quilt would also be great in completely scrappy colors, or in whatever else inspires you to create.⁣
I can't wait to see where your scraps take you in 2021!

Once again - if you have never ordered a PDF pattern from my store, and plan on downloading it to an iPad or iPhone - click HERE so you know where to go to find your files once it is downloaded. Apple doesn't give you a choice. (Hint:  Make sure you know where your FILES APP is.)

One side left to bind!

For those who asked what the name of this panto is, is it any wonder it was hard to recall other than "Feathered Something?"
It is actually called Nemesh Feather Grande by Bethanne Nemesh. Check with your favorite long arm site to see if they carry BethAnne's designs. I purchased mine through urbanelementz.com. They offer both paper and digital versions.

What's Also Fun?

Seeing what you are making from my patterns!

Check out Rianon's progress with Sugar Top

"I‘m making Bonnie’s Sugar Top quilt. This is my progress so far...."

Aren't her fabrics fabulous!?!?

This is Jen's!

"All laid out...now the work begins. I used up a fair amount of my mens’ shirt collection in this one"

If you have a quilt in progress from one of my recent pattern releases, will you please share the photos with me?  I love to see what you are up to!

The PDF patterns for both Winter Blues and Sugar Top are found in the digital patterns section of the Quiltville StoreSugar Top requires a 60 degree triangle ruler with a height of at least 8 1/2’’.

I recommend the Clearview Super 60 and I will be designing MORE quilts with this ruler in the future – it is so much fun to work with these angles!

Today's plan: Putting the finishing touches on Grassy Creek Mystery , Part 6!!

Are you ready?

How many of us are feeling THIS WAY!? LOL!!

Please share how you will be spending your New Year's Eve/New Years Day in the comments below! I loved reading about all of your Christmas Day activities -

It's likely to be a quiet evening here. I plan on finishing that binding on my Easy Breezy quilt, and then who knows what kind if scrappy mayhem I'll find myself in on New Year's Day.

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Just as our quilts will live on long after we will, how we treat others lives on as our legacy by those who felt the ripples of our actions.

Remember, it's all about the ripples - they go on and on! ðŸ’•

Happy New Year's Eve!

  2. I'm going to be doing some straight line quilting using my new Juki TL-18QVP. The quilt is for my daughter, made from 4 1/2" squares of her daughter's baby and toddler clothing.

When my hubby gets home from work we'll have a simple steak dinner- I'm thinking steak and fondue. Then we'll meet a group of our friends on ZOOM to play games and chat.

  3. Love the gravel. We have a short driveway from the road to the garage here in our McCall cabin. We have to replace every few years as the snowplowing inevitably removes it into the yard ;-)

We are spending a quiet NYE here at the cabin, in the mountains, where it snowed all day long yesterday! It's beautiful.

    Happy 2021 to you Bonnie!

  6. Morning Bonnie - I've seen that cartoon too, probably be wearing my bathrobe and fuzzy slippers in my recliner checking my eyelids for holes. Daughter fast asleep on the couch, dog undecided who he wants to lay beside, he doesn't do furniture except his big bed which he shares with his mum, he gets the middle half. I think I'll put Greystoke in the DVD, go out on the porch at 12 and make some kind of racket then go to bed. If she wakes up, daughter will make noise too and then probably go back to the couch for the rest of the night.
Happy and more normal New Year to everyone - keep on stitching

  7. Now more than ever it is all the "little" things that count and bring us joy. Happy New Year to you and your family. Blessing for 2021 and more of the little things. My day today will be with #3 grandchild. He is worth no sewing. LOL

  8. I’ll be sewing binding on a quilt, cooking Hoppin’ John, turnip greens and cornbread, and watching Alabama football! Roll Tide!

  9. For 15 years, up until 6 years ago, hubs and I worked producion in a computer manufacturing and our NYE was spent at the plant - from 6am to midnight, yup an 18 hour day. At 12:05am we were outta there, and went to a bar for a nightcap and watched people who had been partying most of the day. It was very entertaining! We 'retired', and are now very content to spend the evening at home, watching TV and going to bed early, because it will be a new year tomorrow whether I am awake or not. So this year, with the bars and restaurants closed where we live....doesn't seem different to us lol.

  10. OMG! Laughing so hard! I did get new pj's for Christmas. guess they will do. HAHA! So, ready for clue #6. And really ready for the shiny red quilt to! Love all your new patterns & have them in a special Bonnie Binder. BUT, first up I have to finish geese on a string & the grassy creek mystery, THEN I can start on all the others. Thank you Bonnie for all you do for us. Hoping for a much healthier & friendlier 2021 for you & yours. And for all of us. Bring it on!

  11. Happy New Year!! And thank you for all of your creative designs. My New Year's Eve plans? Reading a good book and drinking a glass of wine - while my husband changes the TV channel every 5 minutes. LOL

  12. We live in Portland and are heading down to our cabin at the beach - Arch Cape, just south of Cannon Beach. It will be a quiet evening and weekend. Supposed to be rainy and stormy so we will stoke up the fire and enjoy it all.

  13. I will be indulging my daughter and husband by watching a Three Stooges marathon that a Boston television station offers on New Years Eve every year. Even though she is now 18, she still wants to follow the tradition.

  14. Gravel! Its a good thing! hahaha I will be spending my New Year's cleaning the house - getting ready for the next line of showings so we can sell and move to the mountains. Eye on the prize!

  15. We are up in snow covered Mountains. Our neighbor saves his yard debris all year long to have an epic bonfire in the snow on New Year's. Coffee, cocoa and whiskey will keep us all warm as we naturally social distance in God's great outdoors. So thankful for you and this blog. Happy New Year to you and yours!

  16. Laughing at the alien fabric saw veiny fabric to the right just finished using that fabric in my basket quilt on front and for backing. We are all connected by our scrap fabrics LOL. It's cold here in the Midwest, will be Making Alfredo with shrimp in our sweats and watching an empty Times Square when the ball drops. 2021 can't get here soon enough for me.

  18. Happy 2021 to you, Bonnie. I plan to finish up clue five of Grassy Creek today. Then have a quiet evening. Wish I had something ready to sew binding to, but since I don't I'll probably be knitting tonight instead. And watching a movie. I'm glad you've got gravel in your driveway. Many blessings to you.

  19. We will probably spend it in pjs. I am working on a 60 degree triangle quilt in grays and white for my daughter. I am not enjoying it. Maybe if I had your directions and ruler. 😂

  21. Hey, I grew up in the country and I know exactly how exciting new gravel is!

Our long second drive to the utility barn needs gravel badly. Usually we can get crushed (recycled) concrete dirt cheap, but we're very nearby one of the biggest interstate re-design projects currently happening in the country. We haven't been able to beg, borrow, or sell a kidney to get gravel or crushed concrete around here lately. Hopefully spring!

Your green alien made me smile. :)

  29. You have been an amazing positive light in this crazy year. I am really loving the new patterns you've done this year - especially Appalachian Autumn. And now Winter Blues. Both are on my list for 2021 - one will be a gift and the other "AA" will be for me. New Year's Eve will be spent watching the virtual celebration from the Plaza and bundle up to go outside for the fireworks display at midnight. New Year's Day I usually spend getting myself going for the New Year - I send out cards on the first instead of at Christmas, and I write my thank you cards at that time, too. I am a lover of snail mail. Of course, I'll be eating my traditional foods for NY - black eyed peas, greens, and cornbread. Sending you best wishes for the coming year.

  30. We had our driveway done this fall and I completely understand the excitement. I was at work and ended up staying a little late because my husband wasn’t sure they’d be done when I was due to arrive. I felt like a race car driver not having to worry about all the bumps!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Our New Year's Eve will be extremely noisy if it stops raining in time. Even though our address is Houston, TX, fireworks are allowed and in our neighborhood, ANY excuse to celebrate is embraced and it often sounds like a small was going on until the early morning hours. We've learned how to mask the noise when we're ready to sleep, so have fun everyone! And Happy New Year!

  32. I have spent the past 5 days cleaning and tossing in my sewing room. There is still more to do, but I'm going to take a break and practice very basic ruler work. Plus, I will work on my Grassy Creek clues. I'm slowly working on it. If the weather cooperates and doesn't allow fireworks tonight, I'll be in welcoming the new year in my dreams.

  33. I plan to finish the quilting and start the binding on my last (22nd) quilt of the year...Wow! I can hardly believe I made this many! And I’ll continue watching “Imposters” on Netflix. I so enjoy reading this blog every morning. It inspires me to enjoy whatever the day brings. Thank you Bonnie :)

  34. Tonight I will be working on my epp hexie Christmas wreath for 2021 (hopefully) and tomorrow taking down my Christmas Tree. I put it up the weekend of Thanksgiving and take it down New Years Day as I don't normally have plans for this day and figure it is a fresh start to the new year even though some times it makes me sad but it is time as New Years Eve is the end to the holiday season. Happy and Safe New Year to Everyone.

  35. Haha Bonnie! I, too, know the great joy of fresh gravel and the thrill of the big truck rumbling up the driveway, I love it! Gonna dress up for new years zooms - dress up is earrings and a nicer than usual tshirt but not going so far as to put on a bra! 😉 The nice thing about living on the west coast is that the ball drops in NY at 9 PM then we can go to bed! Happy New Year, let 2020 leave us quietly!

  36. are there plans for a book release or will you be doing individual patterns? I love all your new patterns and will be probably working on the Winter Blues as my leader/ender project.

  38. Love the digital patterns! So much more fun than waiting for a book to come out. Biggest challenge is not creating new UFOs because I want to start them all immediately. NYE will be in my sewing room.

  39. My husband and I are planning a quiet evening but that is normal for us on New Year's Eve. We stay off the roads just in case there are people who have just one too many. Then on Saturday we leave for Phoenix for a month! I have my quilting projects packed up and ready to go to work on while my husband golfs. We have never been able to do this before so we are really excited. We are driving and will be very careful to continue to keep our distance and wear masks but are really looking forward to being outside. We got 9" of snow this week in our area in Iowa. Have a blessed New Year, Bonnie!

  41. Tonight I'll be Zooming with my Thursday night sewing group. We'd probably be partying together if that was possible this year. Today I'm hoping to finish Week 5 of Grassy Creek and be caught up for about 12 hours until tomorrow's clue comes out. Happy New Year, Bonnie. There's nothing better than new gravel to fill in those mud pits.

  42. I totally get the gravel joy. We're having chili and sparkling grape juice. Cocoa later and jigsaw puzzle. Tomorrow will visit my mom, in lockdown with chemo and infusions. Taking her some easy meals. May 2021 be a better year.

  43. Such a delightful post, Bonnie! I've spent the last 2 days cleaning up after gift making in the sewing room. All my leftovers are stripped or in squares. Seems that I have a lot of blues....and there comes Winter Blues. Showed it to my husband and he really likes it too. Your border really intrigues me. The pattern will be in my possession before you can read this! I am going to wait a few weeks to order some mail to me things. Happy New Year to you and your family. Some wonderful things happened in 2020. Growth.

  44. Happy New Year. Today is actually our 50th wedding anniversary. What a year it has been. We were going to have a party and renew our commitment but cobid happened. So we are home.
I do not have any of the alien fabric left. But I sure liked it when I used it all gone to the last bit.

  45. I LOVE all that red!!! Can’t wait to see the whole thing! I ended up with a tote full of reds from an estate sale, along with many other totes full of fabrics!! They’re all washed, ironed folded and ready to use😊

I’m making chicken & dumplings to deliver to someone while her mom is in the hospital with Covid😊
Our son’s kids, 9 yr old boy & 5 year old girl, will be spending the night so mom & dad can go to dinner with friends. Pizza, maybe games & then perhaps bacon, eggs & pancakes in the morning. Might be a day with their whole family then; but if not I will definitely be sewing!!

Happy New Year blessings to you all! Here’s to 2021 becoming better as time goes on!!

  46. I'll most likely be in the Hen Den cleaning up and sorting some scrap piles in anticipation of Clue #6. Can't believe I'm actually caught up. It should be a quiet evening at least until the neighborhood starts shooting off fireworks. Wishing you a Happy New Year. Stay Safe.

  47. The drivers of those huge gravel trucks are true artisans! I watched as one maneuvered the driveway and parking space where I was certain that truck couldn't go!Talk about skill!!!
My days are spent doing normal things despite what's on the calendar. It may be considered overkill since last spring but I'm taking the seclusion recommendation seriously. Quick masked trip for groceries to small market where they are very good about cleaning and disinfecting, Lysol spray shoes before getting back in the car then home to stay for 2 weeks before the next run for groceries. My 'visits' are here where I get to enjoy the company of other quilters. It makes my heart sing to know there are so many of us♥♥♥

  49. New Year's Eve will be spent eating a traditional dinner of kielbasa, hot dogs and sauerkraut. Also, prepping for a new quilt project and cross stitch project to start on New Year's Day. It's been said that whatever you are doing New Year's Day, is what you'll be doing all year. For me, that means quilting and cross stitch.

  50. Happy New Year's Eve to you and Dave! I have been putting together spare blocks and trying to piece them all together for my backing for Unity. I still have not gotten it quilted and decided that I would drag out all extra blocks from any quilt left over and sew them all together. Then see what else I can find to back my Unity quilt. Hoping to get it all piece together by tomorrow. Tonight will be TV night with hubby and knitting as we bring in the New Year early I am sure.

  51. Eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day has been considered good luck for at least 1,500 years. According to a portion of the Talmud written around 500 A.D., it was Jewish custom to eat black-eyed peas in celebration of the Jewish New Year (which occurs in the fall). This morning I cooked dried black eyed peas and found that they are pretty bland so adding salsa. I put stew meat in the crock pot and Darling Hubby cut all the veggies and added them early afternoon. We're going to eat stew and homemade biscuits for dinner with a little candle light. I plan to open the door at midnight to let the old year out and ring 2021 in with a bell from my childhood. I'm going to be wearing my long, black Land's End Nightie with a string of pearls and sparkly earrings and cocktail ring! Good riddance to 2020 and Happy New Year to All!

  72. We spent our NY Eve as we always do - snug and comfy at home. We did make it to midnight, kissed it in and then I started the new year right by reading for a while before going to sleep. 🤓 Today we are sharing a meal with our bubbled son, DIL & grands who live nearby here at our house. The turkey is cooking and the house smells delicious. Made the pies yesterday so it’s a pretty easy and lovely first day of 2022. Happy New Year to all!

  73. We are in a beautiful RV park for the winter, and as everyone else is doing, we are being very careful and staying safe. We had a small party in our group of 30. We ordered individual pizza’s and then we played games. Charades, and Corn Hole, by light. Then just before 10 PM we were all given throw away gloves and we were able to shake hands at 10, something none of us had done in months. That was our midnight! This was all held outside in the fresh air and we all social distanced. HAPPY NEW YEAR BONNIE! I love you blogs each day...... You are how I start my day and most of the time with smiles on my face.

  75. We stayed in on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. We planned something good to eat and drink and had a lovely time. We had stacked enchiladas and watched the movie version of Hamilton on TV. We had cosmopolitan cocktails to welcome the new year. Today we had something good to eat and worked on taking down the Christmas decorations while watching football and movies. Not much sewing going on but that will change in the days to come. I have skipped the current mystery but am deep into Old Tobacco Road. I LOVE the Winter Blues quilt. I realized that I have a bunch of blocks made by a Pam Buda pattern that will work as Block B in a scrappy quilt. I think I may have found how I am going to use that stash of little blocks. Happy New Year, Bonnie!

  76. Last night was noisy in the neighborhood...fireworks and Jimmy Hendricks national anthem playing. Today enjoyed a quiet day piecing my nieces wedding quilt while my husband was playing video games with my son online. Perfect day. Happy new year to you and yours. Thank you for all you do. I enjoy your blog and quilters wisdom.
