A Day to Play at Cotton & Chocolate!

Our Split Nine Patch workshop was held yesterday at Cotton & Chocolate Quilt Co!

They had kindly offered up their space to the quilters of the Conejo Valley even though they were closed for business due to the President’s Day holiday.

Isn’t that just super?

We filled up the four hours of this half day workshop with as much scrappy fun as possible.

We concentrated on things like cutting from the BEGINNING – including strips and where to place the lines on the ruler on the fabric to be sure you are getting the full strip width you desire.

We worked with specialty rulers with our strips, and then fine tuned our machines so that the seam was working as it should to give us the unit size we need for these little fun blocks to come together.

The more you use it, the better you get!

Careful cutting and careful sewing in the right place are the key!

“I can’t believe it!  It’s perfect!”

Everyone concentrating so hard!

So many designs are possible!

We had a lot of fun gathering around the large cutting table putting everyone’s blocks together and trying different layouts.  You can find the free pattern for Split Nine Patch under the free patterns tab at the top of the blog.  There are layouts for all kinds of blocks like this one –try them all!

How cool!

We went from this….

To this!  And more!

Great job, girls!

Scraps are THIS kind of fun!

I want to thank the Conejo Valley Quilters for the great time they’ve shown me while I was in their midst!  I’ll be back in this area in June of 2017 visiting with the Camarillo quilters, a mere 20 minutes or so away from here so I hope to see some familiar faces and some completed quilts then!

Leaving California!

This is a shot around 4pm yesterday afternoon from Malibu where we drove after workshop was over.  Monica and I walked through a wonderful park across from Pepperdine University and enjoyed my last sunny ocean views while enjoying a gelato and just relaxing up before last evening’s guild meeting.

Despite my getting us locked OUT of the building with important things still inside after everyone left…(We got in through another open door at the back of the building luckily!) and my thinking I had lost the keys to my quilt duffel bags, only to find them still attached in the padlock when we reached our destination (Where is my brain?!)  The evening was a great success!

Quiltville Quote of the Day!

Vintage double wedding ring quilt found in Mineola, Texas

Don't settle for anything less today! I may not be traveling around the world looking for it, but I am traveling to Phoenix today, and that's almost the same thing!

I'm meeting with a friend I've known since we were both 12 for dinner tonight.

I'll be spending a few days with my dad, my brother and his family celebrating birthdays.

Have a happy Tuesday, everyone!

  1. It was a pleasure to meet you in person last night (I'm the one who told you I blog under a pseudonym)and to see all those lovely quilts in person - photos and pictures never do them justice!! Absolutely loved hearing YOU explain your system and how you started versus "just reading" at Quiltville. Hope you have a wonderful time in AZ with friends and family.
