Talkin' Turkey in Helena, Montana!

Quilter’s’ uniforms out to play!

Do you see these?  It’s a superman shield with a sewing machine in the center instead of an S!  SO CUTE!

No, I don’t know where you can get them, in fact I think they made them themselves.  This was the extra fun set of sisters that came to my Talkin’ Turkey workshop in Helena, Montana yesterday, and what a day we had!

Our venue is the conference room at the Holiday Inn, and they are spoiling us rotten with coffee, tea, lemonade and iced tea, fresh sliced fruit and hot baked cookies while we sew.  We are in heaven!

We string pieced to our heart’s content!

Blocks were being made in a rainbow of colors!

String corners were added to center 9 patches!

Flying geese soon add to the parade of parts being stock piled!

And before we knew it – whole blocks coming together!

I LOVED this 1959 Bernina!

It belonged to Irene’s mother, and now to Irene who remembers it being used by her mother to make all of her clothes when she was little.  What a legacy this little machine has known.

Irene told the story of how her mother paid a whole $500.00 for this machine back in 1959, which was a LOT of money back then.  In fact, it is the only thing besides the house or the car that was ever bought “on payment.”  And what a worthy purchase it was.  Still sewing like a dream 57 years later.

We’ve got another lovely as well!

This sweet Elna is a workhorse of a machine, and belonged to our quilter’s mother in law.  This machine sews so strongly and so quietly that you can’t hardly hear it as it powers through block after block. These vintage machines are such a welcome sight in any workshop.  I LOVE their stories!

And THESE have been a hit!

The playing cards are available!  I had them shipped up here to Montana at the same time they were being shipped to me at home. When I get home I’ll be able to add them to the website!  They are going fast at $5.00 per pack.  I’ll let you know when you can get your own!

The rest of our day can be found in the slide show below.  Enjoy!

The pattern for Talkin' Turkey is found in my book String Fling.  Signed copies are available in the Quiltville Store!

It was a double duty day with no time to waste when workshop was over.

We took down the quilt, folded up the rack, took the trunk show and the contents of the book signing table over to the lecture location to set up, grabbing a quick bite to eat on our way.

Before I knew it, folks were filing in for my evening presentation, even some Canadians found their way down to Helena for the event.  SO happy to meet everyone!

Top the evening off with a stop at Dairy Queen and we find the perfect end to the perfect day.

Montana Summer Nights? AWESOME!  We clocked 97 degrees as a high by the time the workshop was over.  Sitting outside eating our sundaes outside of Dairy Queen it had cooled off so much that we were getting goose bumps in the breeze!  Compared to what the heat and humidity is doing at home in North Carolina right now, this truly is heaven.

Today we are firing up the machines again with a Texas Tumbleweed workshop full steam ahead.

  1. Looks like everyone was having a great time. Beautiful blocks, I loved seeing all the different color combinations. The funky bright one was really neat, never saw that before, it looked so nice.

  2. Lots of different color ways for Talkin' Turkey. Loved the vintage machines. So glad you are able to cool down in Montana at night. In Dallas it was close to 100, but by 8:00 pm it was still 98 -- just the normal for us this time of year. Glad you are having a productive and fun time with your students. Hugs, Allison in Plano, Texas USA

  3. I love the many colors of these quilts. It needs to go on my to make list, but i have 5 ob Bonnie's quilt started. Perhaps i should finish some of those first. LOL. Glad you are cooling off at night. After several weeks of warm sunny weather here in Alaska, we are now in a week or so of cool rainy weather. Your Alaska cruise was well timed!
