Dogwood Days began its quilting process yesterday.
But it was not fast moving!
I think I encountered every problem that a long arm quilter dreads.
In my case it mostly revolved around the constant snapping of my top thread -
My goal was to make it to half-way quilted yesterday, but in all honestly I was happy to make it 1/6 of the way before I had to abandon everything and head to town for an appointment with the Chiropractor.
But let's take a moment to love this perfect backing!
Of course there wasn't quite enough yardage, and it's directional. With big print. So I played by the "Necessity is the author of invention" and threw in a dark pink racing stripe to make the backing wide enough.
And then I set in to quilting. And all of the thread snapping started.
I changed needles. I readjusted needles to make sure they were straight and not rotated. I cleaned, oiled, retreated everything, and changed top thread.

Can you see the swirls?
I am loving this one - I just want it to behave!
I'm already thinking an aqua binding - just something to finish the edge in the same color family as the piecing at the outside edge of the quilt. Any other color would shout, and it's busy enough as it is.
I'm hoping to have Dogwood Daze ready for PDF pattern release just as my dogwood tree is getting ready to bloom here. Look for it in April.
We will be releasing Waterford mid-March!
Yes, there will be a gift-away and introductory pricing. Stay tuned. There are exciting things happening every month.
After dinner binding stitching!
This is moving along not to shabbily as I only started stitching the binding down on Sunday evening.
A couple more nights and it will be done and I can return to hand quilting the center.
I'm looking at perhaps releasing Abbeygate closer to fall. There are still several months of hand quilting to happen here, but I'm happy that the fuzzy batting edge and the excess backing margins are now gone. It's a lot less to wrestle.
Good Morning from Zoey Jo!
This morning I am off to the inn early - The Lincoln quilt guild gals are on their way from Lincolnton NC - having moved their retreat a day earlier to avoid the snow that is to start falling tonight and through tomorrow.
They'll be all tucked in and cozy and sewing away while the outside does whatever the outside does in February.
I'm heading over to open doors, turn up the heat and be there when they arrive.
What's up for your Tuesday?
Quiltville Quote of the Day -
It's no contest - Hands down!
If anyone needs me, you know where to find me!
If anyone needs me, you know where to find me!

Love that quote of the day! I call mine the craft cave because I do a lot of paper crafting as well as sewing and quilting. Hubby made a big sign for the door in the shape of a cave entrance, and it says on it "Tena's Craft Cave. No matter how bad of a day I'm having, when I walk in there I feel my stress just melting away! Good luck with the incoming storm!
ReplyDeletetrue here too, my sons and grandsons all know to troop upstairs to my sewing areas to find me.
ReplyDeleteI missed putting my name on post about where family finds me most of the time, cutting ,pressing or quilting. Johanne Hagar
ReplyDeleteBeen there with the frustration when the longarm just doesn't want to cooperate, snapping upper threads, skipping stitches, loopy stitches, etc. Yeah, my longarm does not like prewound bobbins either. Same checklist of things to do before really freaking out. Then I also step away from it, and while I'm thinking I tried everything I could and this stubborn machine doesn't want to work right, I search the internet a little, wind up looking at my Gammill support group, and search there to find a few other things I could try to remedy my machine saying NOPE when I want it to go. 12 years into this machine and, so far, it always works out. Sometimes the only thing wrong is just some lint caught in the tension knob.
ReplyDeleteAnd a good morning to you, Zoey Jo. And to you Bonnie.
ReplyDeleteThat’s a great quilt. We all have quilting days like that. Last summer I wanted to throw my long arm in the lake. Loved the positive video. Hi to Zoey too.Sandi Z.
ReplyDeleteCute cute pic of Zoey! Hopefully new thread will continue making your longarm happy. My sewing room is my Happy Place too. Jenny
ReplyDeleteBonnie! Thanks for the heads up about releasing ABBEYGATE...it's absolutely gorgeous! I'm going to start gathering my red/whites for this pattern release.
ReplyDeleteIs it going to be a Monday all week? Never used pre-wound bobbins. Hope it works when you restart this morning. I love your Quote today! Never Disney, just extra time in my Quilt Zone.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, ypu might get food for thought from this youtube about lubricating your thread, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xRjSAbl_NU by a sewing machine repair person.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pep talk Bonnie. Yesterday was a day in frustration. I "reversed sewed" so many times. I made piecing errors and of course did not see them until the top was assembled. The whole thing almost wound up in the garbage. i stepped back relaxed then re-started. Now my top is complete and ready for quilting.
ReplyDeleteBad Thread Happens!

Zoey is so precious! Truly a loving companion. Yes, the big sign in my sewing studio “MY HAPPY PLACE”.
ReplyDeleteSo thankful for the peace and productivity in this space!

Well, I know about that snapping thread. It is VERY frustrating... though I never really thought to change the bobbin. Of course I still think that my problem was the age of the thread; in that it was very old. I did change the color of it after I ripped out the first row anyway, and it went perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about the blue and white one; I might have to cut some scraps up for L/E's. Hopefully the retreaters have a smooth week. We are back to work & school this week. Have a wonderful one! :)
I have a small sewing room that's also my "office" (bill paying, record keeping space), but I have a comfy rocker, a t.v. and my sewing stuff. It has cheery yellow walls, and south facing windows, so it is very much my happy place!
