Isn't this just a fun and iconic site?
With this dreary February day unfolding in Southwestern Virginia I thought I'd post some cheery photos from our lovely warm day in Melbourne, Australia.
However, you have to be a bayside resident to even consider making a purchase (and even then, they’re thought of as lifestyle purchases). For those that are lucky enough to own one of these boxes, they are a prized possession that is usually passed down through the family.
The boxes themselves aren’t a new phenomenon. In fact, they were built more than 100 years ago in answer to Victorian notions of morality when it came to seaside bathing.

Colourful huts were set up so ladies could change into their swimwear in privacy, and they still retain their charm and classic architectural features to this very day. Made out of timber, weatherboards, and with corrugated iron roofs, they are a pretty edition to the sea views.
In keeping with their century-old history, the boxes don’t have running water or electricity, keeping them a part of the city’s past. Along with this, those who own the boxes must follow a list of regulations to maintain the heritage of the box. These include not being able to sleep in them or use them for advertising purposes. They are also not to be rented out to others, which means that the bathing boxes stayed in the confines of those who purchased them.
However, despite the lack of amenities, the bathing boxes offer incredible views – an element that attracts visitors from all over the world. The bright line of huts offers a eye-popping contrast to the turquoise waters of the ocean, and the panoramic views out across Port Phillip Bay are second to none.
Our lovely Melbourne guide pointing things out to us.
At the entrance to the Shrine of Remembrance
The Shrine of Remembrance was built to honor the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I, but now functions as a memorial to all Australians who have served in any war.
It is a site of annual observances for Anzac Day (25 April) and Remembrance Day (11 November), and is one of the largest war memorials in Australia.
Off the rails!
More manic sewing is happening - and since some folks say "Your page should be about quilting and happy things only." there will be MORE.
To these folks who try to limit my speech for their own comfort, please take a step back.
This is my life. This blog is my diary. The good, the bad, the ugly, the sick, the hurt, the angered, the sad, the terrified.
The one thing I promised myself when I started this blog which will be 20 years old this coming June (How can that be possible?) is that I would keep it REAL.
And sometimes I may talk about things that are important to me.
You are free to skip a post now and then if it is something you don't want to read.
But I am not skipping sharing my feelings as I experience my own life.
And if that means that I am angered and saddened that the president of the United States says in a press conference that we are going to OWN Gaza and all of the nearly 2 million Palestinians should be removed and absorbed into other Arab nations against their will so he can build up the Middle East Riviera on their homeland (Oh, beach front property!!) and I say so -
Instead of telling me to "Keep this page quilting only" Maybe allow yourself to simply think on these things. If you are uncomfortable, lean into it. Sit with it. Read up on it.
And if this kind of thing still bothers you - please remember that I am a human being, and you are a guest on my page. Take a break. Come back another day.
I will not shrink myself for anyone else's comfort. And neither should you.
To remain silent is to be complicit.
Fixed!
What a beautiful mess this is!
I now stand at 25 blocks. More will be made - but likely not today.
I've got two days of "must do" appointments ahead - and they are both in Boone.
I asked eye doc if I could come on Friday instead of Thursday. "Sorry, we're not open Fridays."
I asked the dermatologist if I could come on Thursday instead of Friday. "Doctor is at the Asheville clinic on Thursdays."
So I'll be making the 1:15 hour drive two days in a row because both of these things are important. It's just frustrating that they are in the same week when I've got a house full of quilters!
YES! The February Quiltvillians are in the house, and projects are already appearing on design walls.
This makes me very happy indeed, and I'll be leaning into these full house times to keep me going.

I couldn't live in the world without cotton.
Could you?
Have a terrific Thursday, everyone -
Thank you so much for this blog. Hugs to you (and some shared tears).
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie, I appreciate everything you do 💖 🧵🪡🧷
ReplyDeleteWell said.....what a mess our country is in....hugs to you...keep on quilting!
ReplyDeleteThe huts on Brighton Beach are adorable! The Shrine of Remembrance is such a beautiful building. Thanks, Bonnie, for sharing your experiences to places that I will never be able to visit in person. Happy Thursday, Jenny
ReplyDeleteThank you for your blog. I think I’d enjoy the evening news more if they included some quilting . You keep up quilting and a little more human. Don’t stop 💕
ReplyDelete"To remain silent is to be complicit". Amen, Bonnie!
ReplyDeleteWhat sad times, that you are obliged to défend your own right to free speech. Going on my own expérience in 1970s South Africa, "Lets not talk politics" ALWAYS meant "I don't want to hear any criticism of the régime". So BRAVA for speaking out like a free woman!
ReplyDeleteYes Bonnie. I'm happy to hear someone shares my views. It's a scary time for our country. It seems the billionaires are owning it. Anyone who doesn't like to read your comments can use the unsubscribe button. Also enjoy pictures of the animals in your life.
ReplyDeleteI’m happy for you to share whatever you like. Many of us are similarly freaked out right now. Thankful for quilting as a respite.
ReplyDeleteYour blog, your thoughts. Yes! Reading your blog is part of my routine. Love & hugs.

Bonnie, please continue to express your feelings and ideas. That is why most of us follow your blog. We love reading all your blogs and seeing your photos, quilting or trips or others. Hugs, Beverly
ReplyDeleteI can’t believe someone would have the nerve to tell you what you could put in YOUR blog! Amy Dryfoos
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog every day.
ReplyDeleteI applaud your stance to do what you want with YOUR blog and I truly enjoy having this to read with my breakfast every morning. Thank you! As a sub-note, I would like to ask "Why is no one asking the prez where this money would come from for the US take over Gaza when the big concern by unelected Musk is to cut $$$$ from the US debt?" Nobody mentions this, do they.
ReplyDeleteDidn’t realize anonymous was my default, sorry. I enjoy your blog each day. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Bonnie! I come here to visit your space for the inspiration, creativity, laughter and sometimes even tears shed--you enrich my life, and for that I am so very grateful. Sadly, our nation is going through an incredibly difficult time right now. May humility, humanity, love and compassion always rule the day...
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Bonnie! If someone doesn't like what you post, they can find another blog to read!
ReplyDeleteLoved seeing my flag on that beach hut - must belong to an ex-pat. There are lots of beach huts across the UK and some modern ones do have electricity. Great post today and also for staying strong on your beliefs. Love reading whatever you get up to :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you for saying what you feel! Love your blog and keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteYour blog, your subject matter. I love your blog. Don't change a thing. I am enjoying your Australia pictures. Judy in PA
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! I read it every morning it gets my day off to a good start to check in and see what you are doing, making the places you travel to and take us along! I love your spirit and strength and opinions that I personally 100% agree with. I am not Anonymous lol Thank you for ALL you do for us! Theresa Alkire

ReplyDeleteI don’t believe any leader of a country should just think they can come in and take over a country. I sit on the Canadian side of the US. We have been enduring the rath of Mr. Trump. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Sewing up a storm let’s me productive in my happy place. Enjoy your Quiltville Inn guests. Elaine from Ontario.
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie... WE SHALL NOT BE SILENT OR COMPLICIT!
ReplyDeleteBonnie,
ReplyDeleteI share your tears, your fears, and your outrage with current events. Even if I didn't, it wouldn't matter because this is YOUR BLOG! Thank you for being you and being real! Keep on going! Your posts are like visiting with an old friend on the front porch. Thanks for the Australia pics! My traveling days are over, so your travel pics are an added bonus for me! I love your posts, whether it's about the pets, political and world events, your travels, your laundry, your inn guests, or, of course, your quilts.
Bravo Bonnie! Just because we are quilters doesn't mean we cannot have a say in what horrible things are happening in our country today. Freedom of speech!
ReplyDeleteBravo Bonnie, bravo!
ReplyDeleteYou go, girl!!
ReplyDeletehi bonnie;
ReplyDeleteI applaud the fact that you are speaking out regarding what Trump is doing. This is your blog , with your thoughts and feelings. You are so right. We are guests on your page. If you don't like what is written , then please feel free to scroll on by. More people need to stand up and be counted. It's frightening what he is doing. I am a Canadian and him constantly referring to Canada as the 51st state is very concerning. He is signalling his intent. Not because he really believes that it is better for Canadians, but because he wants our resources. He has his own agenda. LIke someone else in Germany did.
thanks for doing all that you do.
