One side and the hanging sleeve left to go and Dogwood Daze will be in the DONE column!
I have had so much fun making this one - strings are just THE BEST.
And if you sort them by color family any project becomes a colorwash of variety unparalleled!
Of course Mabel didn't mind being a bit covered up as I worked.
And Ivy, checking out my stitches from her nest between my knees.
I wish I could say that yesterday was a whole lot of accomplishment, but not all days are like that.
Some are mundane - I don't want to regale you with how efficiently the towel baskets were folded, the dishwasher emptied and the flannel on the design walls rolled to remove all threads, the ironing surfaces having had their freezer paper protective coverings replaced...
It didn't leave me much time to do anything else -
I did manage a bit more of this -
There are less than 20 blocks left to make now.
Only 4 saw their completion -
And all the while I'm laughing - THIS is going to make a dent in the scraps? Yeah. Right. Hahahahaha! (But it's worth trying!)
I did have many questions yesterday on why I choose to avoid Hobby Lobby. It's personal to me - I try to let people make up their own minds on where to spend their money. But since you asked:
I just find that ethics come into question on many levels with Hobby Lobby. Our values do not align.
Hobby Lobby was charged with a $3 million federal fine and forfeited thousands of ancient Iraqi artifacts they had smuggled from the Middle East that the government alleges were intentionally mislabeled. The story is HERE.
More:
The owners of Hobby Lobby claimed that employee's insurance providing certain types of birth control violated their religious beliefs. They are forcing their religious beliefs on their employees through their insurance coverage.
This ruling allowed Hobby Lobby to deny employees access to specific forms of birth control covered under their health insurance plan. (But it didn't ban the "little blue pill" for men.)
Do these folks have to work there if they are not okay with it? No. They aren't being forced into that as the only job they could ever have. But it still sounds like overreach and religious control to me.
It is well known that the owners of Hobby Lobby donate millions of dollars annually to the National Christian Foundation, a non-profit organization where donors can anonymously funnel money to "nearly two dozen anti-LGBT and anti-Muslim hate groups." If you care about already marginalized communities, then consider where your money is going if you spend it at Hobby Lobby.
You really don't have to look very hard to find plenty of information on this.
It’s ironic really - because everything in the store is covered in "I Love Jesus" slogans and loads of wall art with bible references but they spew so much hurt to anyone who is not of their belief system.
Show me how you really believe by how you treat your own employees, marginalized groups and "others." And maybe I'll believe your signage.
I know people have to shop where they can find what they need - especially in rural areas. But basically, Hobby Lobby gives me the creeps.
We are all able to shop where we want and support what we want.
So this is likely more than you need to know. But you asked.
Man - I've been on a rampage lately, haven't I?
Is this what happens at 63???
I'm sorry - but not sorry.
In some ways I feel like I am barely holding on to sanity here.
So today there will be more log cabin blocks....Housekeeper Susan is on hand to make the inn sparkle, and tomorrow we will be welcoming in the March Quiltvillians!
Can spring please be around the corner?
I really feel the need to get out there and get some hiking in.
Quiltville Quote of the Day -
Growing up I'd get sent to my room.
Now I just send myself to my sewing room.
Now I just send myself to my sewing room.
Have a terrific Tuesday, everyone!
Well said -agree 100%!
ReplyDeleteThank you for 'agree'.
DeleteMy daughter and I do not shop at Hobby Lobby for the same reason
DeleteI don’t do hobby lobby either. Thanks for sharing it. Sad when companies with so much do so little
ReplyDeleteGood for you, spend your money where your beliefs are.
ReplyDeleteThat said, it is true that the older we get, the more we are willing to say “out loud.”
YES. I'm 77 and I just don't care as much as I did when I was young to hide my feelings. I tell it like it is. That's the way I roll now! Love your quote today and laughed out loud.
DeleteYou and I are on the same page!! Thanks for your eloquence.
ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly with you regarding HL. I even worked there for about 3 months. Worst employer ever!
ReplyDeleteSecond day in a row with above freezing, but snow piles are 4+ feet at end of drive way. I need spring too, but it will be a while in the Adirondack mountains.
ReplyDeleteI’m with you in we show our beliefs by what we do and how we treat others, not what we say
Thank you. I suspect you will get trolled, but you can look in the mirror. Quilting helps. It is not enough. But it helps. Hang in.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the above. Please don’t find anything bad about Home Goods!! Jean
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with everything you posted! I wish Home Goods sold quilting supplies.
DeleteThanks for your comments on Hobby Lobby- I have never shopped there because of their anti abortion actions as well as LGBT views and support for political views I don’t share but you have reinforced my feelings with all the info you shared. Thanks for keeping me sane in these crazy times- I have 3 children that have worked for the federal government- one has already lost her job and 2 that are doing the 5 things they have done last week. I took 2 flimsys to my longarmer- Old Town and a 100 block and sashed county Clare- thanks for keeping me busy- love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your adult children going through this.
DeleteSame boat - I know people, family and not, who were supposed to name their 5 things or else. Saw a good one on Facebook about making all billionaires name 5 things they did for society in the last week...
DeleteI agree 100%
ReplyDeleteYes, well said, Bonnie. Also, thank you for giving more information. I only knew about the fight to deny birth control as part of the employee health insurance plan which was enough for me to avoid shopping at Hobby Lobby. The loss of Joann's is unfortunate, too.
ReplyDeleteSame here in small town Montana, Joann's is closing but we are lucky to have 3 small locally owned quilt stores and a longarm store.
DeleteI vote in the booth and I vote with my dollar. I do not shop Hobby Lobby.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, they asked, you answered. They probably had no idea. I've only been in one and didn't buy anything, just checking out because they were new. After researching, said never again.
ReplyDeleteSpend your hard earned dollars where it will do good.
Sadly, man HL customers share the owners’ views.
DeleteThank you Bonnie. I agree with everything you stated!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie you are helping to keep the truth alive. We need you desperately.
ReplyDeleteMary Jo Kluth
Everyone needs to keep the truth alive. Thank you for doing your share.
ReplyDeleteI agree, I have boycotted Hobby Lobby the whole time they have been in Bangor. Among the same issues you brought up. My first rip there I was looking for Some "Day of the Dead decorations", When I asked I got a response that was so snide and judgmental about how they don't stock that kind of decoration.. What? They are a "Christian" store.
ReplyDeleteNo traditional Halloween decorations either.
DeleteYou're not at all "on a rampage". We've reached a point in this country, where silence will kill our Democracy and our Freedom.
ReplyDeleteMaking the choice to inform your readers' inquiry is a positive in my view!
Happy Tuesday :-)
I haven't shopped at HL for years. In addition to what you pointed out the owners are very anti-semitic.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see the comments of support you received. Add me to the list of your supporters. And no, your rampage is not due to your age. It is because you care about others and the world around you.
ReplyDeleteThank you for saying this out loud. I’m with you.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing this information. You are inspiring. Sandy Wright
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments. I, too, avoid Hobby Lobby for the same reasons. On another note, you may not feel productive all the time, but I am impressed with all you get done. I am so slow.
ReplyDeleteI am at the point of making a choice in my Sit and Sew group: speak honestly or quit.
ReplyDeleteGo for it, girl! It’s time for us all to speak our truth. Our truth is beautiful and inclusive.
DeleteYour opinions of Hobby Lobby mirror my own. I also have never spent a dime at Chick-fil-A-another group of hate-spewing, bigoted, homophobic owners.
ReplyDeleteWell said! Agree 100% on Hobby Lobby. I don’t shop there either.
ReplyDeleteLove today's quote! I fire myself from housecleaning every day. I need Housekeeper Susan to come for a visit to make my home sparkle. :-) :-) Jenny
ReplyDeleteHobby Lobby gives me the creeps too. Haven't set foot in there in well over a decade, for all the same reasons. As a Jew, I find the Jesus stuff everywhere in my face very offputting. You are now in the "losing allyour filters" stage of life - it's very freeing!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you Bonnie. I never thought it correct that they put restrictions on their health benefits. Thankyou for saying I like it is.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for saying it out loud!
I don't shop at HL either. I need to keep my values and morals in mind when I spend.
ReplyDeleteI love the string quilts, but the bins never seem to go down, do they?
Tara
Thanks Bonnie for saying it like it is. I’ve been boycotting them for years.
ReplyDeleteSusie Kainula
I also have been avoiding Hobby Lobby for years. You stated my reasons perfectly. They are thieves and support hate groups. I won't support them!
ReplyDeleteNo apologies necessary!! I really love what I can find at Hobby Lobby, but feel the same way about their political side. So I'm torn about shopping there. Luckily the only store nearby is 80 miles away, and I don't shop there often. I'm bummed by the closing of the Joann's stores.
ReplyDeleteYour comments perfectly reflect my own feelings about Hobby Lobby. I don't support a group that promotes hate. They are also thieves.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. Now that I know I'll not give them by business.
ReplyDeleteThank you for expressing my thoughts re: Hobby Lobby. I have not shopped th÷e for many years. Some of my friends are dubious, but it's my $5! I also do not shop Walmart, again my $5, I choose where to spend it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all you stated. I quit the quilt groups I was in as I didn't feel free to state my opinion in this very "red" area that I live and having to watch every word I said. I don't appreciate all the "Jesus loves you" signs when it doesn't appear to be love in their hearts - all we have for crafts around here is Hobby Lobby but I rarely step foot in the store - maybe 2 times a year - I hope you do not get hate mail
ReplyDeleteWe've all got Bonnie's back if she does!
DeleteI do not shop at HL or Chik-Fil-A - they both give me the creeps. Thank you, Bonnie, for your honesty and sincerity. AND, I fired myself from house cleaning - my attitude was really bad and I quilt on the job, too! LOL!
ReplyDeleteMe either…no HL or Chil-Fil-A for me for years,
DeleteFor all their anti-Muslim spiel, it's interesting how they gloss over how many millions for those looted artifacts went to Islamic State pockets.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a long time since I've set foot in HL. It will be a long time before I do again, for all the reasons you have.
I've threatened to fire the housekeeper, chef, and gardener. The whole lot are Slackers! And all of them are me. Sigh...
Thank you for saying that out loud. I don't shop at Hobby Lobby and a few other stores, but I understand that not everyone has the choice to go elsewhere. With Joann closing, I will have to order general sewing supplies online.
ReplyDeleteAgree! I was pained when I recently had to buy something at HL for our church quilt group because it was out of stock everywhere else. I avoid them whenever I can.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the question was asked and how you answered. My heart is heavy today with the ongoing death of this country's soul. I pray for eyes to be opened and compassion chosen again. You don't need to publish this comment. I don't want to bring others down or you for that matter! I'm just glad to read you write truth here when asked.
ReplyDelete@ Loris - It's not just the death of the country's soul. It's more dangerous than that. It's the rise of dictatorship, ignoring the Constitution, thumbing noses at laws, getting away with crimes, surrounding yourself with yes-men minions who let you, and padding courts and Congress so they won't stop you. Never thought I'd see something so terrible going on. I lived through the Nixon years and thought that was bad enough. But this tops everything, ever. I don't know how anyone, red OR blue, can support this nonsense...because next time, the target could be YOU. Midterms are coming...VOTE. (Although I live where Republicans are trying to cancel my vote on some stupid technicality that doesn't even apply to me, yet they have still targeted me!)
DeleteHere here!! We can switch around the Congress with the upcoming elections in the next couple of months. I hope the voters in those areas wake up and smell the dictatorship coming. Mary Trump tried her darndest to warn us what he was up to.
DeleteThank you Bonnie for using your platform to speak up and sharing your sources as well. I also haven't shopped at Hobby Lobby in years for moral reasons. We are each doing our part and educating where we can.
ReplyDeleteYay for binding and more log cabin blocks and the start of your retreat season and warmer weather.
Best,
Janice F.
Thank you for speaking your mind about Hobby Lobby. I, too, will not touch their store with a ten foot pole, nor eat at Chik-Fil-A for similar reasons. I'm told Christianity is a religion of love and brotherhood. It's a pity that so many people who purport to belong to that faith don't show any sign of it. I treasure those among my friends who do.
ReplyDeleteI applaud you for speaking up. Hobby Lobby, Chick Filet, Walmart, and Kwik Trip ( a local chain of convenience/gas station stores) are the ones I boycott for the exact reasons you gave. I hope you get more positive support than negative.
ReplyDeleteI’m with you 100% on Hobby Lobby. Haven’t shopped there in years. Thanks for enlightening others as to why we feel that way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100% about Hobby Lobby!
ReplyDeleteHave avoided hobby lobby for years for these very reasons. They are entitled to their beliefs, and i am entitled to choose where to spend my money.
ReplyDeleteBravo, Bonnie! With no holds barred, you say it like it is! It is a privilege earned by women of a certain age and older! I applaud your using your business platform to speak out in spite of the inherent risks of losing customers. Hopefully, you'll convince the lost to return to the side of decency and correctness.
ReplyDeleteAs a person of Christian faith I don’t shop at Hobby Lobby. What matters is living the faith by the way we treat others. Forcing beliefs on others is not living the faith. Respect is. My experience is that the more Bible verses a person quotes the less likely they are to live the faith.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that bothers me is the fact that what they sell says "made in China" on the under side. That alone supports factories that are a little sketchie in my opinion. Low wages, long hours, underage workers.Yet they charge top dollar for their items. I said something one day and was told "we couldn't make,a profit if we,didn't get the best prices. They have no conscience, they justify their actions with rhetoric.
ReplyDeleteWasn't the HL owner involved in the new Bible museum in Washington DC, and that's what all the relics were supposed to be for? That and the similar Ark Encounter place are on my Never Visit list, for all the reasons given. I cannot condone using one's religion to do the things those people (and more) have done. It's worse than just being a jerk or a thief period.
ReplyDeleteHL is a good example of being a maga Christian rather than a Jesus Christian.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the satirical "GOP Jesus" video? Spot on!
DeleteDear Bonnie, Thanks for the timely reminder that we only cast ballots on predetermined dates to express our political views, *but* we ‘vote’ with our lived values every day, including where we spend our dollars! Don’t buy *anything* on Feb. 28 in protest, and also call your Congress people on the DC switchboard—the number is on Katie Couric’s Instagram—and urge them to stand up to tyranny. Then quilt on!!!! 👍🏻🤩 Nancy O.
ReplyDeleteI wish the "buy nothing" days would actually work. They tried that with gas stations. All it does is delay spending by a day or move it up one. People are still going to get what they want/need in the end.
DeleteThank you Bonnie, it is important that we speak our truths. I was unfortunately exposed to my LQS owner's racist rant when she didn't realize I was in her shop. This had been my "escape" when I needed a break and it breaks my heart that ANY adult feels that way, but I will NEVER step foot in there again. I have not been in HL since they got religious exemptions for birth control, CF and Wallyworld are on my never frequent lists as well. Deleted FB, Twitter and Amazon accounts since the inauguration.
ReplyDeleteI knew that Hobby Lobby had issues re their religious beliefs and, therfore, never entered any of their stores. I didn't know about them having the law suit re artifacts. Thank God I have a fabric/quilt store nearby. I have also purchased wide backings from Marshall's Dry Goods. So far I have not had any issues with their fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI have never shopped at Hobby Lobby for all the above reasons. There's little enough one can do to combat hate, but where I spend my money is one small action.
ReplyDeleteNancy O. again: Too much? Too much probably—I’m sorry, Bonnie.🫣🙄 I absolutely lost.my.mind. yesterday when I saw that the Felon-in-Chief refused to sign the resolution that Russia started the war against Ukraine. Now America is aligning itself with a dictator who murders innocent people and also his political opponents?? And for what—money and power!!! My dad, a WWII veteran, must be spinning in his grave! It’s unconscionable that we Americans have been sullied and humiliated by a soulless, would-be tyrant. God help us! Needless to say, you need not publish either of my comments, but I commend your stance and fellow feeling. 💓
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie. It takes courage to speak up in this environment especially with a small business. Don’t shop at Hobby Lobby either, I gave back a gift card someone gave me and explained why. Not sure it did anything but embarrass her but felt it was an opportunity to educate. Mary Ann
ReplyDeleteBonnie -- Sometimes I wonder if we are sisters (except I am many years older). Agree 100% with all of it -- including sending myself to my sewing room! Not a bad idea to head there now!! Mary B, MT
ReplyDeleteI know about HL, and have been in one (on a vacation). I live in Alaska. Now that
ReplyDeleteJoann is gone, we have 7 local quilt stores.
Bravo Bonnie---thank you for speaking up
ReplyDeleteDorothy in W WA
100% agree, not just with your views on HL but also your right to speak out on your blog since people asked. Where I live, Joann's and Hobby Lobby are right next to each other. I won't be making that 10 mile trip anymore to get yarn and fabric with my daughter.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your views too and haven't shopped HB since the artifact scandal and their views on suppressing employee right to choose by virtue of insurance coverage. It's blackmail and control. I haven't expressed my views to the sewing/knitting groups I belong to as their views don't mesh with mine. These issues have to do with human rights and our ability to recognize injustices. You always have a way of speaking your truth without intimidation because you are pure of heart and conviction. I admire you.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for speaking up again. I have refused to shop there for the same reasons that you articulated and feel justified even more so now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for saying something detailing the "secrets" behind the faux Christianity of Hobby Lobby. I have seen too much hypocrisy in our country lately. I also refuse to go to Chick Filet ever since I learned of their anti-gay stance.
ReplyDeleteHow long til same-sex marriage is repealed, now that we "officially" only have 2 sexes in this country and all that lovely jazz that goes with that way of thinking? I just heard that 9 states are trying to overturn the ruling that allowed such marriages. Just like Roe, it's in danger. Unbelievable.
DeleteBonnie, thank you for explaining the reasons for your stance on Hobby Lobby. I'm so frustrated by the amount of prejudice cloaked by religious beliefs that defy the actual tenets of those supposed beliefs. I've also not stepped foot in a Hobby Lobby since I learned of their policies. Educating people about these things is the only way we'll be able to push back - thank you for using your platform to inform!
ReplyDeleteI agree, unfortunately HL is all we have. Will only go there as a very last resort.
ReplyDeleteBravo, never spent a penny at HL or C-F-A. They don't align with my standards of decency.
ReplyDeleteCeci
Amen sister! Please don’t be sorry for being a good person. There are lots of “religious” folks out there that are really not very Christian in their hearts.
ReplyDeleteYou're clearly not alone! My sisters and I raise a middle finger in their direction, any time we drive past a Hobby Lobby.
ReplyDeleteWell said. I agree with you 100%.
ReplyDeleteDitto on HL. It's sacrilegious to make billions of dollars on Christianity knick knacks?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bonnie, for using your platform to educate and inform your audience . . . and with such eloquence. Job well done!!
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie,
ReplyDeleteSince I clocked up my late 50’s and now early 60’s, I feel and voice my dismay at political and social issues. I attribute it to our acquired life time of knowledge and experience. We are confident and informed, so stupid, thoughtless and wasteful behaviour annoys the heck out of us. We aren’t scared to voice it with who we believe are like minded.
So glad you enjoyed your Aussie trip. I feel lucky to be an Australian.
Love what you do. People like you make America great.
I agree wholeheartedly about HL. Boycotting them is the only way I have to protest. Too bad they don't know or care,
ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly!! I just pop in to HL now and again, but never really spend any major $$ there. I am really saddened about JoAnn and all of the employees there. Praying for them to land on their feet soon.
ReplyDeleteIt was good to see Miss Mabel on the post... I was wondering how she's been! Ivy takes the cake though with her stinky face! HA!! I love it! Back to work this week... it will be a bit before I can get back to the sewing machine. Have a fabulous quilty week! :)
100% agree. I avoid it. I go to my local sewing/vacuum dealer to buy my supplies.
ReplyDeleteAgree 100% on HL & CFA. NOPE & NOPE.
ReplyDeleteYou sound very sane to me. I'm unable to fully enjoy being at a quilt retreat this week because the national news on the lodge lobby flatscreen TV is so awful... When HL opened nearby, our JoAnn's also closed shortly. In many places JoAnn's also provided space for groups to meet to quilt, and many kinds of crafts classes.
ReplyDeleteAmen to your post and every comment. My initial revulsion with HL was that everything had a made in China label and then as time went on and the other issues became known, I lost all interest in supporting them. Feel the same way about other businesses. Have not been inside Walmart in many years, and have proven to myself that it is absolutely possible to live without these big box stores that make us feel so dependent on them while they ruthlessly destroy local economies.
ReplyDeleteThere is a Hobby Lobby store in walking distance from my house, but I refuse to shop there. Thanks for being public about your stance!
ReplyDeleteI do most of my shopping at Krogers since it and a couple of drug stores are the only places to shop on my side of town. Krogers is usually cheaper than the drug store prices. Think Kroger will add fabric to their inventory? They seem to have everything else.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I totally agree. I have never shopped at that store and never will. There is also a new fabric company around that makes it very clear on their home page what their "religion" is and I refuse to make a purchase from them. We still have the ability to shop our political beliefs.
ReplyDeleteDuring the election one hobby lobby store had a man arrested because he was handing out bottles of water to people in line to vote. (The line up passed the store)
ReplyDeleteMy goodness if I paid attention to what companies support I wouldn't have a place to shop. I'm a very opinionated person and pert near everything these days ticks me off...LOL! Good for you for drawing a line and standing on what you believe.
ReplyDeleteThank you for NOT being afraid to voice your opinion. I agree with all of what you said. We’ve held back voicing these comments as others of the religious persuasion have no qualms about forcing their opinions.
ReplyDelete100% agreement. Maybe we should have a Quilters For Democracy walk on Washington when the weather gets better.
ReplyDeleteSue from AZ/OH (unfortunately two red states)
I've only been to Hobby Lobby a couple of times - I burst out laughing when I came to the of crosses and told my friend that I was going to burst into flames! Then I found out more about their practices and haven't been back.
ReplyDeleteNo Hobby Lobby for me either and also no Chik-Fil-A
ReplyDeleteI’m right there with you about Hobby Lobby, and add Chic-filet to the list. They are very similar in their doctrines.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime I am so glad you say what you feel and back it up with facts for the unknowing. You are a breath of fresh air….and a fabulous designer, quilter, hostess, animal mom etc.
Thank you Bonnie! I 'shopped' once at hl - and fled - for the same reasons. I thought it was creepy to shop there. And I've never been in a cf, never will. There are a lot of people who are 'religious' which is different from christian.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you re: Hobby Lobby. I won't shop there or at WalMart or at Chick-Fil-A. Now I've added companies that support the hate of our current President and Project 2025 or have dropped their DEI policies to my 'do not shop there' list. I'm rediscovering the joy of shopping with local business owners!
ReplyDelete
