In the Finishing Line Up!

I spent my weekend doing this!

It didn't take long really - the main little string block centers are the "middle" cut-outs from behind my recent hexie star applique finished a couple of months back.

It was only September.  It feels much farther back than that.

Does your year feel twice as long, too?

This quilt makes me so happy!

It was a great way to use the Hexie Star blocks -

Without any more Y seams!

And these were all the saved and trimmed centers.

But how to set them?

They are oddly sized -

So I had to do something that I could square down easily to go with them.

I decided on some simple hourglass units in neutrals and colors - which makes the little string blocks appear to be in an on-point diamond unit, when in actuality it was a simple straight set layout.

"Webbing" the top made the assembly very easy - I binge watched "The Winsors" on Netfix while assembling.

And this is what I ended up with.

All of 45 1/2'' square.

And I think this is as big as it will stay - wall hanging or table topper -

The string units you see between the hourglasses in the border were left over border from my recently finished crumb quilt which went out for a photo shoot in Saturday's glorious sunshine.

I LOVE this quilt more and more!

Breezy and warm out!

(Which ends this week - it's pouring right now and we should have snow by Wednesday!)

This really was a fun quilt to make -

Even if the blocks languished for a few years before I finally decided to get in there and finish them up.

Another thing that happened this weekend - I made the LAST Easy Breezy leader & ender block needed.  Hopefully by next #mediafreesunday I'll be setting those blocks together.

The common thread with all of these quilts?  They were made for me.  Not for publication. Not for a book.  Not for a workshop. Just made to be made.  And that feels really good to me right now.

Not much hand quilting happened last evening, either!

How can you stitch through this kind of love?

I hope you enjoyed your weekend as well - whatever you got up to!

I mentioned the pouring outside - I'm actually typing this at the QPO because of the rain/clouds.  I don't have any internet at the cabin, we live solely by cell data. And on stormy days cell data isn't sufficient to upload all of these photos to the blog.

My Monday has one exciting thing happening - I hope to pick up my van this afternoon from the deer attack repair place, and return my rental car to Galax.  I'll have my Moby wheels back.  Hooray.

I'll have a better chance of getting up our steep and winding drive to the cabin during a snow event than I would in this little roller skate of a rental!

We DO still have a Super Duper Quiltmaker Bundle Gift-Away happening - did you enter to win yet? Check out all of the goodies and enter to win ON THAT POST.

And there are more holiday gift-aways happening soon, so stay tuned!

Actions will always speak louder than words - written or spoken.

  4. Wonderful post, Bonnie. There is real joy in making a quilt, or anything really, that just needs to be made. My family can sort all that out after I leave this earth. No more will they like it as I work. I think the quilts will feel and pass that joy to the next one to hold it and snuggle.

  6. Love, love, love your new finish!! I am happy that you have decided to keep it as a "just for you" quilt and not publish a pattern. You deserve to have some of that in your home, to me it makes it cozier when no one else has that same pattern. Thank you for all you so FREELY give with your creations, you are SEW appreciated and loved by me!@

I am having so much fun seeing everyone FB pics of their mystery quilt progress. I am a teacher finishing up the semester, and I'm looking forward to some machine time over the holidays. I'm inspired by your string/crumb blocks/quilts.

  11. Bonnie, your quilts are beautiful! When you made the crumb quilt, did you use a foundation when sewing them into a block? I enjoy your Blog and read it every day.

  20. I am loving your recent finishes. And, you are so right, sometimes doing something just for yourself, because you want to and on your schedule is the very best feeling. When I saw it I thought, crumbs—perfect for 2020. But, when you mentioned using the neutral string border as something calm to contain it the parallel to how I have used quilting to help me endure was complete.
Can’t wait to work on my Sugar Top quilt!

  21. Your creativity always amazes me. I love each and every one. And yes, it is nice to make a quilt just for yourself. I have given everything I have made away. All the bed quilts I have are for double sized quilts make by grandmothers and great grandmothers. I cherish them, but all out beds are queen sized. So when I finish the current projects, I am going tackle 3 UFOs that will be just for us. Nancy A: SewingGranda@gmail.com

  23. The idea of clam shells and fans quilting design on the 4 patch quilt sounds interesting. Would the clam shells be started by lining them up across the bottom and the doing the fan inside the clam shells and then starting another row of clam shells to be quilted inside with the fan? I can't tell in the photo.

  24. Bonnie, I get you so much. When I owned my little quilt shop, almost every quilt I made was for the shop as a sample for a pattern, book or fabric line. Whenever I could work on something just for myself, it was wonderful. I am back all me now as I don't have the shop anymore. I love what you have done just for yourself.

  25. I love your scrappy quilt with the hourglass blocks between each scrappy square. I might have to put that one on my to do list. I have a whole bunch of scrappy 5.5" squares and could start making the hourglass ones to fill in. The string border is really nice too! Thanks so much!
