An Afternoon of Porch Treadling!

How long has it been since I treadled on the porch?

At least a year!  If not more.

And this porch was meant for treadling – in the right kind of weather, which is what happened yesterday afternoon.

This is the wonderful Singer 27 that Charlotte Angotti presented as a gift to Quiltville Inn and those who stay here.  Anyone who wants to try their hand (and feet!) at treadling is welcome to sit down at it – either inside the dining room, or out on the porch.

And this peaceful spot just beckoned to me yesterday.

Yes, there could have been a dozen other things I could have should have been doing.

But sometimes you’ve just got to sit.  And set your feet to rocking.

Watching a lonely country highway – a bin of scraps by my side.

Beware of man-wielding-drone! LOL!

There was also some practice flying while this was going on – I want to know who that old lady is – and why can’t she control the mess of scraps that is happening on the floor around her feet!

And I wasn’t alone!

Zoey spent the day with me yesterday – she had a 1pm appointment for a flea/tick meds update and a pawdicure!

The girl hates her nails trimmed more than anything and it had been since her spaying in April that she last had her nails tended to.  Well – other than the two I barely managed to clip while she was somewhat sleeping, but that ended in a hurry.

She does NOT tolerate anyone trimming her toes.  I am guessing that someone at some time before she came to us may have trimmed them a bit too short and clipped into the quick.  Youch.

From what the vet tech said, it took two people to hold her down to get the job done.  And she was rewarded with much treats after.  Maybe in due time it won’t be such a big deal, but she will go get them trimmed quarterly when we get her meds.  It’s worth the extra 10 bucks for ME not to be the bad guy every time toe nail trimming happens.

Little Ivy and Zoey Jo making friends!

In fact – they are quite enamored with each other.

She is SMELLING my food, mom!

Aren’t you going to do something about it?

Yes, Ivy was scooted away to her own food bowl, and Zoey’s food was taken up and put away after Zoey was done with it.

I know enough to know that dogs shouldn’t eat cat food, and visa versa.  But a little smell now and then out of curiosity won’t hurt either of them.

I also got an appointment set for Ivy at 1pm on Monday.  They were too busy to work her in yesterday in conjunction with Zoey’s appointment.

I will have them check if she has been chipped – and follow through with that if she has been.

If she has not been chipped – we will take care of that too, as well as checking to see if she has been spayed.

Please let her not be pregnant!  If that was the reason she was dumped off – shame on those who did the dumping.  She should have been spayed.  And chipped.  And loved.  And not dumped off.

If all systems are go – and no family is found, I think that we have a companion for Lola who will come around eventually, and definitely for Zoey Jo who can’t get enough of Ivy.

And Ivy is loving her right back – rubbing herself on Zoey’s legs, purring, meowing, playing -

The other thing that happened yesterday – HVAC guys came out.  The unit is TOAST.  No saving it.  So it’s a good thing that I brought the window A/C unit up from Wallburg and that we can get this taken care of with a new unit before fall rolls around and I need heat.

The company is about 3 weeks behind due to scarcity of units as things really slowed down on the manufacturing end due to Covid.

We’ve got a couple of warm months still ahead of us – so we should be okay.

And that is something to be grateful for.

How is your Wednesday shaping up where you are?

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Is there anything prettier than a simple 9-patch quilt? Now all I can think of is making some simple 9-patches!

However you spend your Wednesday, here's to hoping you find some time to pet the fat quarters!

  1. Another reason dogs (and cats) resist having their nails trimmed is that their paws have not been handled when they were babies. It's an important step in socializing them - rubbing and massaging their paws so they get used to them being handled.

    1. That's exactly what my vet told me when I introduced him to my new puppy. It helped a LOT but it did still take a while for her to accept her pedicure ☺

  2. I am spending my Wednesday waiting for the plumber between 8 and noon. My bathroom hot water facet broke and I think our water pressure regulator went out too as we hardly have any water pressure. I was up early and got my 8000 steps in before the rain hits for the next 48 hours they say. I got my housework done, so I guess I will sit at my Singer in the living room and sew strings while I await the plumber. I have used them all up and need some more for a project.

  3. The air conditioner in our new to us home didn't work the first time we turned it on. In was only 90 degrees then so we were good. Unfortunately the warranty company did not have a contractor in our area and it took weeks before they could find on. By then it was 100 plus almost daily.bwe found out ours was toast and then it hut 112 degrees, 95 degrees in the house!I was lucky that my sister gave us a small portable air conditioner that saved the day, kind of.iur air conditioner is fixed now. I can't that the local contractor enough given it was 150 degrees in our attic when he was working on it!! We provided lots and lots of bottled water!!

  4. I was trying to think of a name to suggest for your beautiful little kitty but then when you mentioned the name Ivy, it just seemed to fit her. It makes my heart happy that she found you and will be taken care of properly! What a beautiful thing to have happen when all else is so topsy turvy. Have a beautiful day Bonnie ❤

  5. The original owners would love that lady treadling on the porch!

I grew up on a dairy farm. Many times, we would hear a car slow down and drop a cat off. And that was 40 years ago. Some things never change.

  6. Isn’t it amazing how young ones can always get along? Like kids used to be on the playground...it’s the grownups that form dislikes and prejudices. Let us all remember what it was like to be a kid and show love to all those around us...family, friend, or stranger! Thanks for the reminder from the animal kingdom...have a glorious day!

  7. My dad once picked up a stray cocker spaniel. She was a beautiful dog who delivered 7 puppies shortly after she joined us! As kids we enjoyed it, but she was spayed right after that! She was a wonderful dog.
It's nice you have the treadle available. Some day I may try one.

  8. What a lovely way to spend some time on the porch with animal companions and the hubby overseeing all! Enjoy the rest of the summer! June

  10. Bonnie, I know just what you mean by looking at a picture of yourself and wondering who that old lady is! But, dear lady, I am much older in number of years but I share your youthful passion for fabric and piecing! Love the name Ivy. It is so sad when people dump them off rather than finding another home, seriously people.....Bless you for taking her in. She is so lucky!

  11. ZoeyJo and Ivy are so cute loving on each other, I’d never heard that cats and dogs should not eat each other’s food but I don’t have dogs just cats.
Love the picture of you treadling id love to learn how to use one, but I really have no space for one.
    Stay safe
    Love and quilty hugs

  12. The quilt Zoey is on is the type of quilts my Grandma made. I'm curious about its history.

  13. I love to use a treadle machine. I have a 1940 Singer 127, sometimes its a hand crank. My favorite is a 1936 Singer 201k. Also a 1917 White Rotary treadle.

My furbaby hates having nails clipped too. We finally for a lady who grooms her and can actually clip them.

  15. Zoey and our dog, China a Whippet mix, also a rescue HATES to have her nails done. She actually screams when you try to cut them. So she goes to the vet as well.

  18. Service techs give you the standard response "Anytime from 8-12." It's almost 2:00 and I just got the call, "Sorry ma'am, it's going to be after 5:00 before we can get to you." I took the day off work to meet them. Luckily I had sewing to do so the day hasn't been a complete waste. The new normal.....

    1. I got lucky and my plumber showed up at 10:00 a.m. and was done a little before noon. So I got some string piecing done while he worked.

  19. My dogs groomer some one would hold a dog friendly catin front of my dog and she forgot about the nails being clipped. If I had to do it myself there was a good smear of peanut butter put on the side of the fridge for her to lick off and distract her

  21. Love today’s quilt quote!
With you on the “Who’s that old lady?” in photos—I think you’re a year younger than I!
-beautiful kitty and so glad the pets are getting along as well as can be expected.
I’ve never treadled but would love to have that view whenever!

  22. I'm so happy Ivy found a good home where she will be cared for and loved. We've taken in several cats over the years. It seems that whenever we lost one and there was an opening another cat always came along to apply for the position. Right now we have two, brother & sister, that we got by default when they were about 7-8 weeks old. Their momma, who was a stray we started feeding & still a little untrusting of humans, was just starting to wean them when she disappeared. (coyotes probably) They're three years old now and as spoiled as can be. We take our orders from them! LOL

  23. I live vicariously through you when it comes to sitting on the porch with a treadle machine. I read your posts between patients and will be very excited for the day that I can retire and stay home and sew my guts out! :)
Love the fur friends too! Sweet as pie!

  24. Hoping all turns out well with your new fur baby. First sewing machine I ever used was a Singer treadle. Have very fond memories as a young girl, of sitting with my mother while she taught me to use the machine to make dolls clothes from fabric scraps left over from clothing she was making. Happy days!

  25. Fingers crossed you can keep Little Ivy. She is a little darling. Maybe she saw Lola and thought that these people like cats! I'm in! Perhaps she went awol, but if she isn't chipped, she needs shelter and food and she certainly found love! Even Zoey Jo doesn't really mind and looks like they'll all be great friends in time.
Had to laugh at the sneaky photo - husbands and drones are evil monsters! Blame the scraps on a breeze!
My two kittens are being collected at the end of August. Can't wait for fur babies. Feathered outdoor girls and boys are not the same as a purry friend or two. Even a puppy would be nice - maybe in a couple of years . . .

  26. Yesterday I got a corvid test and thankfully it is negative. Put a binding on a quilt and did some cooking. Did not eat the entire pasta salad out of anxiety as I did on Tuesday. Your posts especially about Ivy have been a welcome distraction

  27. We had the same problem with our pup. Now we use the Dremel and it goes like a dream. We spent a lot of time and small steps getting her used to the sound and feel before actually trimming. Of course it helped that many small treats were involved.

  30. My grandmother taught me on her treadle. I wish I had it now, great memories. My husband used a dremle tool on our dog's nails, first just running it around him and gradually doing 1 nail, then more. It was quite successful and less chance of getting into the quick. We started as a puppy, so it was always what he was used to.

  31. We got two cats from being dumped off. I hope Ivy is one of them for Zoey sake. I just love your approach to life.

  32. We adopted a Rottweiler a while back and he was wonderful - as long as you didn't touch his feet (unless you were a toddler - you could do whatever you wanted to him then). It took some patience, gentle scolding and treats to get him to accept the fact that I was the boss and he was going to lay there and let me clip his nails without resisting or growling at me.

  33. I would love to treadle on my back (or front) stoop...but my 1894-dated Singer in it's cabinet (it has a beehive cover) weighs a *ton*! Can't figure how to move it (even though it has wheels) because it's so darned heavy! Any tips?

P.S. Glad you've named wee Ivy, even if it turns out she's chipped and belongs elsewhere. And yes, I hope she's not preggers! Good luck!

  34. Ivy is a pretty name for a pretty kitty.

  35. On the bucket list: ramp the back room to the back porch so I can move the treadle in and out of the house without major bumping and grinding. Might not happen this year but it will happen eventually! We have been sweltering now for many, many weeks in Maryland so porch treadling is on hold. But back to Ivy and Zoey- looks like they are constructing a working relationship. Life is good.

  36. It's Not Wednesday, but I can go down and pet some FQs before bed. I did pet some earlier in the downstairs hallway. I love the Quote of the day, except mine would have to say I traded my marbles for "Fiber", be it fabric, yarn, crochet Thread, you name it!

This is the first dasy I have had to catch up on your blog, so trying to go backward to find when "Ivy" first came to stay w/ you.

  37. I love your new puppy! What kind of dog is she? Also, I am enjoying your blogs about how your kitties are getting to know each other. I'd love to get an older cat to keep my dog company, but our dog was never around cats and she likes to chase them. If I could find a cat that was raised around dogs, maybe that would work. I'm 76 and I don't want a cat to outlive me, and then worrying about what will happen to her after I'm gone. I really enjoy your blogs.
