A Smith Mountain Morning in Wichita!

IMG_0042
Squeeze it all in here girls, we can fit in this photo!

We had an ADVENTUROUS day yesterday with the Prairie Quilters in Wichita – including friends who had come from as far as Nebraska to join in our fun this weekend.

This bunch was such a hoot! We had an absolute ball, and I have made plans with Jean (purple shirt, second from the left) to do some antique mall hopping and lunch out on Wednesday because my flight doesn’t leave until later afternoon.  Yeeeeehawww!

We met at the extension office, and what a busy place it was.  Saturdays in this time of year also mean the farmer’s market has full control of the parking lot, and the place was hopping.  There was also a vintage/antique clock and watch show going on.

Just about 11:20 while we are busily cutting and sewing and pressing – the power went out for the whole building!  Our first thought of course was that “THE IRONS DID IT!”  But it turns out that something happened with the entire grid and power was out for 4,000 residents as well as some of the traffic lights in the area.

No, the irons did NOT do it!  But we were still without power!

This lovely featherweight just sat there.  No power!

It was decided that we would just go to lunch from 11:30 until 12:30, and we must have had good quilting karma on our side because the power was restored by the time we got back and we didn’t skip a beat!

I am so glad..I was trying to think of what we could do with no power.  We could still get practice cutting with the specialty rulers, we could talk technique, we could still do our show & share, but we needed power to sew.  So happy it worked out!

These irons were NOT to blame!

Happy Quilters cutting it up!

There were some variations in theme!

I like where these are going!

Always always always experiement and turn the pieces around.  You might find a layout you find more interesting! And if you did it by mistake?  Just own it and go with it! LOL!

Smith Mountain Morning, Wichita KS 2016

I did some wandering last evening!

I sure love it being light later.  But BOY was it windy out!  I walked down to the Old Town area….more photos to follow in a future post.  But don’t you love these buildings and the brickwork?  And of course, that tile entrance way!  They just don’t make them like this any more.  Wichita is also famous for bronze sculptures all through the downtown area.  Beautiful art!

I did some of this!

Can you see what's going on here? Sometimes you've got to literally watch TV in mirror image when the desk faces the wall and the TV is behind you!  I’ve got two Winston Ways blocks done for my QOV Mini Quilt Auction.  I hope to finish the next two tonight.  So grateful for quilters who will loan me their machines while I am in their midst!

  1. We had a power outage at a retreat. Caused by a branch that fell across wires. I had handwork and we had fun. We worried about supper but the power returned before we starved

  2. Smith Mountain is near the top of my favorite quilts list. Glad you weren't inconvienced much by the power outage. I was happy to spend all day yesterday at an "open sew" with my quilting buddies. Means that 3 weeks after surgery I have stamina for sewing/cutting/visiting/celebrating a friend's birthday for 9 hours. Yippee!

I have to tell you, I watched Quiltcam with you last week, and heard you say about Quilts of Valor, and the blocks you were going to make. I also heard you say they were 1.5 and 2.5 squares. So then I went on the internet to find a picture of that block. I was successful as it was 1-7-12 blog. There were no directions but there was a layout! So I counted every square and how many there were and commenced to cutting. I really like the half square directions you have in your tips and techniques as compared to using the easy angle due to the hole eating my fabric! Needless to say, I have put it together, which I had the half squares going in every wrong directions. So this morning I took it all apart, kept the picture up, and finally got it correct. I am dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to quilting, but I have always been one who just dives in and starts. My block is not perfect, but I am proud of it and I can live with it. Thank you so much for being so generous with someone like me who wants to know but didn't know how to start! SonjaJJames@zoomtown.com

I just LOVE your posts and the pictures as well as the antique quilt photos and quotes. But try hard as I might, could not identify ANY of the photos posted taken in Wichita! I lived there 9 years and went to High school at Cathedral High and walked several blocks into middle of downtown to Central Ave to catch my bus home all those HS years. NONE of those buildings looked remotely familiar! There was a big department store middle of town called Buck's and another a block or so away called Innes. Then there was the big City Library. Else no clue where those
big brick buildings shown in the photos are located. Didn't go across the river much though so maybe that was the location? I think there were railroad tracks across the bridge ....
In any case, your photos brought back many fond memories ...

  5. Thank you so very much for the great slideshow of all the ladies having fun! So glad you got the power back on, we need that! Let's hear it for clean coal and no rolling blackouts in the future.

  6. I always enjoy seeing the color variations that people choose. Some really pretty ones here! I hope they will share their finished quilts (or even just finished quilt tops!) here in the future!
