On the Way to Soldotna!

20150513_221229
This is Alaska!

What a difference a few ((okay, several!)) hours makes sitting on a plane, minding my own business, watching a couple of movies, sewing a few hexies along the way!

It’s MAY –but spring comes slowly in these far northern frozen places –and the white outside of the plane window is just breathtaking!

I am always glued to the window when I fly to scenic places like this ---

And this time I didn’t have a window seat, so it was me grabbing a glimpse any time the guy who HAD the window seat got up to stretch his legs….

Of course it was broad daylight when we landed after 9pm --- by the time we grabbed our luggage and got the rental car it was 10-something heading toward 11pm.

Your body will do weird body clock things when it is this light out at that hour:

Somewhere around 10:30pm!

Yesterday was a run around day – adjust to the time difference ((HA!))  Grab a few provisions and make our way down to Soldotna and the Kenai.

Why not stop at the Alaska Zoo?

Okay – why not?

Just so we can get funny photos like this!

I think this moose needs to go on a diet!

Actually, I felt more like this guy!

I have always had mixed feelings about zoos.  But I usually come out in favor of them – each story at each exhibit was about an animal that can no longer live in the wild – due to broken wings, or some other injury that meant it could not survive on its own.

Some animals are kept until they are rehabilitated and then let back out into the wild again – and this is a great thing.

But mostly, I think of the many children who get their first up close and personal experience in learning about these animals because there ARE zoos for them to visit – and there were loads and loads of kids out at the Alaska Zoo yesterday, educational field trips!  It’s important.  And without zoos, this would not be possible.

Enjoying the scenery at the zoo – spring is just springing!

I love this drive!

This is my 6th visit to Alaska, and I never get tired of it.  And there are always new things to see and do.

We were told about the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center…and it was SO worth the visit!  I know my photos don’t do it justice, but I am uploading them into a slide show.

Click the image below if you are unable to view the slide show on your mobile device, you’ll be taken to the photo album for viewing.

So I am here!  Along the Kenai!

Workshop today – need to be ready to go.  Since I’ve been up since 3am something (ugh!) I know I”ll need a nap, but there won’t be time.  I’ve also got a lecture tonight….

From the frying pan into the fire, but alive and kicking and so happy to be here!

Love from Alaska – and more when I can!

  3. I agree, zoos can be very educational. The animals are well cared for and their life expectancy is longer than ones in the wild. At least they don't have to work for a living like those in a circus. Sure, in a perfect world, the animals should be in their natural habitat. But we, as imperfect humans, have destroyed much of that.
Enjoying your travels to places I may never get to see for myself!

  6. After seeing how beautiful it is in Alaska I may have to visit some day. Tell us what is the temperature this time of year. Since you have visited many times, have you seen the aurora borealis?

  9. Welcome to Soldotna! What brings you to this part of the world? Are you here for the birding festival? Or is there a mysterious quilting fest that I've not heard of? :)

  10. Hi there. That "moose" doesn't need to go on a diet because it's a bison. It's supposed to be that size.
    :-D

  11. I've not ever seen a "bison" with a rack like that moose. :-)
