I know I've said this many a time.
When asked what my favorite kinds of quilts are the one word answer is "Scrappy."
Scrap quilts with multitudes of different fabrics were always the one that captured my fancy.
But if you took it one step further and asked me "If you could only make one kind of quilt for the rest of your life what would it be?" The answer would be string quilts.
The options are so varied, the opportunities so vast.
I just can't stop making string quilts.
I had some time to do a little trim up of blocks and thought I'd capture it in video:
Of course, the video was sped up about 4X...if only I could really work that fast.
What are these blocks becoming?
I've gotten this far.
And of course, it hasn't made a dent in anything so this one may have to go King Size for any visible difference in the string bins.
But the variety in these scraps makes my heart sing!
Does anyone else recognize the 1950s blue with the tiny flowers? It's off to the left in the photo.
These are the kinds of things I can do when busy days interrupt my sewing time.
Or when my brain is too tangled up in other things to really consider anything more intricate.
String quilts for the win - ALL THE TIME!
This little ditty has a new home!
It's on top of the Imperial style table in the Hen Den, adding just the right touch.
The July Quiltvillians arrived late yesterday afternoon and the house is once again full with the reunion of folks who haven't seen each other since this time last year.
Many of them had to drive through horrendous storms to get here, but luckily it was only sprinkling as they unloaded cars.
Another fun week of quiltershipping ahead!
I was pretty wiped out last evening, so I didn't get much more done than this...but this second fill-in row end piece is on its way to being finished so I can move back on to rosette motifs.
So it's true - even on a busy day where you don't think you can do much, a few things stitched together will still give me something to show for it at the end of the day.
It's true what they say - my soul is filled with needle and thread!
And then there was this that made me smile:
This thrills me to no end.
Since this was taken at your quilt retreat, I'm also hoping they adorned the beds for some sweet quilty sleeping??

Quiltville Quote of the Day -
Though sometimes I do wonder if it is the cat who is smarter?
Have a terrific Thursday, everyone!
What an amazing and inspiring photo to see 4 variations of Old Town...wow!
ReplyDeleteI can't stop looking at them!
Love the pic of the Four Old Town quilts! They're all beautiful, and the purple/teal really pops with brightness. Love it! Happy Thursday, Jenny
ReplyDeleteMorning. This is for the lady that said that phone books are getting harder to find, there are -if you invest- all those booklets that they send once a year for your financial info and for you to vote. - those work really well and rip easier because they seem to be tinner. But I am one that uses fabric for the foundation - I use all the really thin pieces of old pillow cases or sheets. Love your strings, lots of work there.
ReplyDeleteI love string blocks too and never knew about them until you taught me :0) Great memories of all those classes with you back in NY :0) Happy Sewing and thanks for all the inspiration Bonnie !
ReplyDeleteCats are smarter. They just sit around and let us do all the work. They know they don’t have to work for their food. Susan
ReplyDeleteMy cat would think she was the smartest thing in the sewing room. She manages to keep her tail out of the machine and the rotary cutter AND she makes her choice of block arrangements known! hehe
ReplyDeleteAmazing Old Town in alternate colorways. Good to see the friends making them and sharing the Finish. TaDa!! I agree, sometimes just moving a few parts forward on a project, laying it out scrappy, taking a picture, then checking the picture before posting. That's a Goal achieved.
ReplyDeleteThis week I made two of my friends and myself a seat belt covers out of left over quilt blocks and the one I made for myself was from a string quilt I worked on at a retreat a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteI ordered and LOVE Abbeygate! Collecting reds and neutrals for it now..
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie. Was wondering if you would share what you put on pressing station to protect top of cabinet. I know you’ve probably posted before but I’ve FINALLY got my cabinet and can’t remember. Ugh. Thanks so much for all the patterns and inspiration!! Love your blog. It starts my day off wonderfully. Look forward to it every day.
ReplyDeleteI love all the Old Town quilt finishes. I am envious because I was making the blocks and making good progress when I had a house fire last month. I was able to save the blocks but my fabric is still boxed up and I haven't been able to find it yet. Someday soon, I hope to get back to it. I was also finishing up my version of another pattern that I can't remember now. Too much has happened. I do have a sewing machine and a couple of boxes of old scrap fabrics so I am still pulling needles and threads. All is not lost.
ReplyDeleteOh, the new project might be just the ticket to get me in on the "string thinking!!" I'm loving it! But then I am in awe of most of the new stuff you keep coming up with. My one thing would have to be log cabins. I just love them. Any variation!! Looking forward to the weekend, Idaho Square Dance is set to get on the long arm machine first thing Saturday morning!! Hope to see some great stuff this weekend as well! Happy stitching!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI still have some of that little blue floral fabric! I’m pretty sure my mom deconstructed my old dress! 🤔😉❤️
ReplyDeleteI love the blue string quilt pattern. I’m getting inspired to start sorting scraps!
