Memorial Day & More!

Just about the time the rhododendrons start to droop and petals fall, the mountain laurel takes over -

And they are ALL OVER THE PLACE on our property - I just adore their little cupped shape and the darker pink markings on their petals.

It has been a colder Memorial Day weekend than I remember - it never got past the 50's yesterday, and this morning it was 39 when I woke up.  Supposedly we will be seeing that temp go up - but WOW.  I had to turn the HEAT on!

More white clusters on a background of verdant green.

With the weather being off-and-on rainy and definitely cold, it was a hunker in and work on inside stuff kind of weekend.

This is the thing I am MOST excited about!

There is a second laundry location happening in the garage/shop at Quiltville Inn.

The previous owners were going to turn this building into a "suite" for their planned B&B, but it never happened.  In fact we've found many weird starts that had no finishes, no rhyme or reason, and no way to tell which direction they were going with what.

Through the door on the left is where a proposed bathroom was supposed to be - it's got hook ups for toilet and shower, but plumbing that went nowhere within the walls, and wiring that wasn't connected to anything either - and the crazy thing was that they enclosed everything so that you couldn't even get to the starts and stops without removing the walls down to the studs.

Which we had to do to find out just what had been done, and what had not.  It's a mystery!

The door wasn't even there previously - they had completely walled it off.  WHY!? I don't know.  The bathroom-to-be was only accessible by an outside door on the other side.  Weird, I tell you.  Very weird.

There were shelves built into this inset space and all of the paint cans were stored here.  We removed the shelving and paint cans to find that there was electricity here - an overhead light - and it backs up to where the shower plumbing is in the bathroom behind it.

We can only guess that this is where the wet bar sink was going to go.

So to make a long story short - this space is too narrow for a side-by-side washer/dryer, but another stacked unit like the one we put inside the Inn (NOT A FRONT LOADER!) will go here.

The hubster has worked on this for days - all weekend - to get the electricity switched, and the plumbing brought in including the box for the water attachments and the dryer vent (not shown here) set in to vent out of the building.

It's getting closer.  It will never appear in House Beautiful magazine, but it will cut the time it takes me to wash Inn laundry in between retreats by HALF.  And that is priceless to me.

The washer/dryer combo has been ordered and should be here this week.

I found the missing project!!

It was folded under a stack of other blocks and had been placed on my postmaster's desk at the QPO studio.

So I am giving you a sneaky peeky at what I am now doing with this little ditty to be revealed on my designated day on Pat Sloan's Holiday Book Tour!

Yes, I snuck the frog in there for fun.

He is GREEN after all!

You'll see just where these are going on June 5th!

All of us on the tour were given free range over picking a project from Pat's new Holiday Celebrations book!  We were told we could make it in our own style, be it just a block, a few blocks, or the whole quilt.

I'm excited to show you what I made and where I jumped off.

Here is a video of all of the projects in the Holiday Celebrations book:

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

This is the day we pay homage to all those who didn’t come home.
This is not Veterans Day.
Today is a day of solemn contemplation over the cost of freedom. I know that those who served did so that we MAY have continued freedom, joy and happiness. It's not a day of sackcloth and ashes, but neither should they be forgotten.
In the hustle and bustle and enjoyment of a 3 day holiday weekend, please carve out a few moments of gratitude for all that has been given.
To all who gave their all, and their families who loved them and lost them, we thank you always for your sacrifice.

Not just today - but every day.

  1. It sounds like you have a "fun" house... but apparently the previous owners knew what they wanted at the time!
Enjoy the snuggle weather...(as it appears that Zoey and Lola are doing!)
Today we are in the 80's with high humidity and chances for rain this evening.
Today I am putting the border on my twin size for my customer so I can get her finished up. Itching to be cutting my scraps. (That's my summer project!)
Looking forward to NOT going to work tomorrow, & the next couple of months.
Enjoy the day and say a prayer for those who have fought for us and didn't come home. Last night they were saying a few stories during the Nascar race about the names of the soldiers on the cars, and they had me tearing up. So brave where they.

  3. 1. Thank you for reminding everyone of what Memorial Day truly is.
    2. I LOVE those Mountain Laurel. Thank you for letting us KNOW what the flower is. Second on this. If you flatten them out, they look so much like sand dollars.
    3. Thank you for just being you. I so truly enjoy your FB page, your group, and THIS blog. I have tried to follow a couple of other designer/teachers. NO luck. They just didn't suit. I only follow you.
    4. I do feel so badly for those who make you feel badly. You are a great, intelligent lady, I love your directions, and how easy to follow they are. Have a great weekend. So sorry it's cold, it's hot here in Florida. It's 12:30 and 82.

  4. think the former owners were just "tidying up" before they put it on the market. you never know what is behind the walls of your house till you tear into them! trying to regain my sewing/quilting mojo but it is hard. reading your blog helps a lot! still working from home, on a laptop for 8 hours is more tiring than being in the office where you can get up and walk around. Retirement is looking better every day. looking forward to the day you come back out to Asilomar so I can take a class from you! keep up the good work! Janet B.

  5. Awesome post, Bonnie. Book tour should be a blast. Remembering what our freedom has cost....priceless.

  6. When we built our house, the builder ran water lines and drain lines in the wall behind the living room built-ins. and closed them up. He did it in case someone wanted to put in a wet bar. We are not big drinkers and didn't want a wet bar in the living room....but if we sell, the new owners could do it.
