Hi Everyone!
I’m very excited to be participating on the first day of the blog hop promoting Quiltmaker Magazine’s 100 blocks by 100 designers, Volume 8!
This is the 7th consecutive issue I have participated in, and let me tell you, these issues get better and better and better!
There are blocks of every kind to suit every taste, from traditional and modern pieced blocks, to paper pieced blocks – blocks for appliquers and embellishers and embroiderers alike!
I just love looking at the variety of blocks and all the different techniques used to make them and am so inspired by what is pulled together all in one volume for you!
My block started out as a “What can I do with all these left over bonus triangles” experiment!
The first block I did came from the bonus triangles from several Boxy Stars quilts that were donated to charity. I made the block from the bonus triangles in random scraps in 2005:
Saving bonus triangles in usable sizes mean I actually DO use them! I used my Bonus Triangle Buddy to mark my second sewing line giving me triangle squares that give me an even measurement for ease of use!
Click HERE to learn how to save your bonus units so they are ready to go!
For volume 8 of 100 blocks – I wondered if I could tone down my usual scrappy everything look – for a bit more of a subtle color way:
I love blue and green together!
I dug into my blue and green scraps and my pre-cut squares from my Scrap User's System, including things like civil war, batik, old calicoes, recycled shirts, plaids stripes and everything under the sun as long as it was in these two color families. My usual love of scrappy neutrals as a background canvas did the job I wanted it to do – and there is everything in these backgrounds too including recycled plaids and stripes, batik, prints from the 1980s and modern black on whites!
You might even notice that not all the star points match perfectly. I sewed my block on my 1911 singer treadle machine. I’m not the best treadler out there, but I give it a good shot.
I loved this block so much that after I sent it off to Quiltmaker I just kept sewing!
In the gallery section of the magazine you will find my Scrap Crystals block in a finished quilt:
No pattern is given in the magazine for the full quilt, but it will be making an appearance in my next book, More Adventures with Leaders & Enders, published by Kansas City Star and due out in Spring 2014!
Please visit Quiltmaker’s Blog, Quilty Pleasures for more goodies and give-aways HERE! All of the other participants of this blog hop are listed on the Quiltmaker blog, so don’t miss out.
If you are new to Quiltville, I hope you’ll stick around and explore a bit! There are a multitude of tabs at the top of the blog to direct you to things like my Free Patterns, Tips & Techniques, Vintage Sewing Machines and to my Quilt-Cam –when I am home and not traveling teaching quilting, I will turn on the live web cam in my studio and you can sew along with me! These episodes are archived on YouTube and are all accessible by the links in the Quilt-Cam tab.
You will also notice a tab called Celtic Solstice! Every year I run a Reader Appreciation Mystery. Celtic Solstice is this year’s online mystery and our introductory post is linked at the bottom of the tab with the yardage requirements, colors and other info to participate in this year’s mystery which starts November 29th! It’s a ton of fun---I hope you’ll play along!
We've also got a very active Facebook community, over 37,000 readers strong! Click the link at the bottom of this post to like our Facebook page and keep up with what we are doing there. Feel free to share photos of your quilts in progress and share with others!
This blog is updated at least twice a day so you will want to keep up with the latest news and adventures of a traveling itinerant quilter. There is always something fun to read in Quiltville!
Now – the good part!
Leave me a comment in the comments section below. If you've made any of my quilts before, tell me something about your favorite!
Remember - your email address MUST be visible in your profile, or in your comment to win. If I have no way to contact you back, I'll have to choose someone else!
The drawing will be open until Sunday, November 17th when I will draw the winners.
Happy Hopping, everyone!
Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI loved participating in last year's mystery, and I'm choosing fabrics for this one. too.
Your "Story-Time Stars" quilt was a lot of fun to make - now I just need to find a little one to give it to (or hold on to it hoping for a grandchild one day)!
I have collected most of these volumes and find them a great resourse. I love the clever way you've put your block together and your resulting quilt is awesome! I've made your Maverick Stars and a crumbs quilt and have several other quilts 'bookmarked'. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of this :-)
ReplyDeleteI would love to win a copy of this magazine . I started purchasing them mainly for your block. Someday I am going to make one of them. HAHA. Love following you on your blog and facebook and have been to 2 of your classes and a lecture but still can't wait until 2015 when you visit my guild. Thanks again for all you do.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your block. Sew excited that this is going to getbyou even more notice and appreciation.....well deserved. LOVE the quilt!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite so far that I have worked on is Double Delight. I used the browns, blues, pinks and golds. Couldn't believe that my choices would look so good together. WOW! I have all the magazines so far. Thanks for the chance to win number 8.
ReplyDeleteI made your bow tie quilt...fast and easy!! Thanks for the chance to win this wonderful magazine!
ReplyDeletePaulette
My favorite quilt is one I made for my Mom's 89th birthday out of blocks embroidered by my Grandma. It will always be my favorite.
ReplyDeleteStill plugging away on Easy Street as a Leader/Ender project. All parts are finally cut and first three steps are now complete. Hadn't made much progress since I ran out of pre-cut pieces to use as Leaders/Enders. I see the finish line in sight! Thank you for all your patterns.
ReplyDeleteI'm new to quilting, and love the way you can use up the fabric using this system, rather than throwing it out, or even worse - just leaving it pile up and get in the way.....Thank you for the chance to win what looks like a great book!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog and watching quilt cam have only caught one live as I live in Australia and am working when you are live so thanks that its archived now. Haven't made one yet but am wanting to make boxy stars as a first choice then on to my sisters choice block. Thanks for the chance to win. Pauline
ReplyDeleteI haven't made any of your quilts yet, but plan to do Celtic Solstice. I'm currently collecting fabric. I have started saving scraps. The quilt made from your block is really sweet! I love the whole thing!
ReplyDeleteI have actually been following you for a while, but I have yet to finish one one of your quilts. I am currently working on a scrappy strip and a scrappy trip quilt. Hope to finish one this month!!!
ReplyDeleteI've been pulling fabrics for the upcoming Celtic Solstice. This will be my first mystery quilt, and I can hardly wait for the first clue.
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch for the chance to win Volume 8! ☺

I really like your Scrap Crystals block and just love how you made it into a quilt using so many greens. I would love to win a copy of this magazine! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove the block! Thanks for the chance to win the magazine.
ReplyDeleteYour scrappy quilts caught my eye. I am a fairly new follower and I love your designs and ideas. I have been browsing your free patterns trying to decide which quilt to start. I'm so excited!
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to the Celtic Solstice mystery. It will be the biggest quilt that I have attempted so far. I am planning on the 75" X 75" version. I have a Scrappy Trips almost complete. I just have to decide what to do about borders.
ReplyDeleteI'm still plugging away on this. It got put aside after our return from Alaska as I had a couple baby quilts to work on. But, I'm happy to say that it's back along with my Winston Ways from Block Party in Portland. I am going to get these to completed before starting nothing else.....uh huh, really.
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie. Going by the front cover of the book there are some amazing looking blocks in this issue. Your block looks fantastic and I can't wait to read your triangle sorting tips as I seem to end up with a few left over triangles as well. Thanks for the chance to win a prize. Cheers, Tracy (Australia)
ReplyDeleteI love your block...I'm seeing potential for my stash, especially the 'ugly' prints...time to start cutting strips!
ReplyDeleteI have made so many and have all your books. The most recent waiting for quilting is the bricks and stepping stones. And my fabric is pulled for the new mystery.
ReplyDeleteI have done your last three Mystery Quilts, and have my fabric picked out for this years Mystery. My favorite is Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll! I really like the colors (I used yours!), it is on my bed right now! I would love to win the Book!
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I just love your block and quilt. Favorite pattern? Can't pick! But my Easy Street is my favorite quilt to date. Thanks for the chance to win:)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win! I am currently making the Scrappy Mountain Majesties, entirely out of my scraps. I am hoping to participate in your Celtic Solstice, but I certainly don't have enough scraps for that.
ReplyDeleteFun block! I have a bunch of bonus triangles in various sizes accumulating for that future quilt; I completed Easy Street up to borders and am looking forward to Celtic Solstice. Your pattern listings have spurred me towards work on a tumbler quilt, 1000 Pyramids, Sister's Choice, Bow Ties, Spools, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something :) Loving every minute!
ReplyDeleteI am a recent follower and I am doing Cheddar Bowties as my first leader & ender. I have also pulled fabric for the new mystery quilt which will be my first one. I have been sewing quilts with my vintage machines for some time and can't believe it took me so long to find you!!
ReplyDeleteI just reached the very last week of the Easy Street Mystery Quilt and I am in the middle of my first 'Trip around the world" quilt using left-over solids. I am pacing my Easy Street to be completed just before the next Mystery Quilt starts, which I am already pulling fabrics for!
ReplyDeleteWell, Bonnie, this glimpse of your Scrap Crystals quilt gives me another reason to buy your forthcoming book! In the meantime, it sure would be nice to win the magazine so that I can get started making blocks.
ReplyDelete--C.B.
My favorite completed quilt from one of your patterns is "My Blue Heaven." It is a beautiful example of a "coordinated scrappy" quilt. I am also trying hard to get organized using your scrap-saver methods. I cut a little bit every day & my messy scrap bins are shrinking. Instead I have nice, neat piles of pre-cut squares. What a nice feeling!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pattern I've made is pineapple blossom. I will make mor pineapple blossoms. Working on other patterns. Love the 100 blocks series, can't wait to add the nee one to my collection.

ReplyDeleteI love following your blog posts. You light up my life with all of the places I get to see through your eyes. So far I haven't had the opportunity to be able to be a part of one of your classes. I love Quilt Makers 100 block books and the chance to win one. Thanks
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I wish I could say I have made some of those quilts. I guess you could say that I am a green-go. I have done, geese's, then just this last week I took classes to do: Easy Pease Pineapple, Impromptu, and then Pinwheel. I had a great time in my classes and sure learned a lot, made new friends a long the way.
ReplyDeleteI like those scrappy stars! Love the 100 blocks and would love to win this new one. Thanks lia.vandenbrand@live.nl
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful opportunities you give you followers with a chance to win the numerous prizes. I would love to win one of the Quilt Makers 100 block books. I am attempting to make the quilt you did for your brother recently so keep your fingers crossed for me.
ReplyDeleteThank. Linda H
One of my first quilts was Bricks and Stepping Stones, and then I also made Strip Twist. I really enjoyed making Easy Street as your mystery last year; the king size version is decorating my bed.
ReplyDeleteI like most of your quilts, and I think the block you made here is great.
I follow your blog daily and love quilt cam, I have nearly completed Lazy Sunday and plan on making Sisters Choice soon! I have got 18 meters of fabric ready for Celtic Solstice, have been waiting all year for the mystery (found your blog last January as Easy Street finished). Love the way you use colour and contrast in your quilts. I bought String Fling but haven't made a quilt from it yet. Really appreciate the opportunity to win this block book, got volume 7 and love it! Thanks for everything Bonnie, Julie (Australia)
ReplyDeleteI love your new block and quilt and such a perfect name "scrap crystals". I have done and taught a numbers of your quilts as well as 5 mysteries. Have fabric picked for Celtic Solstice and am currently working on about 4 of your other patterns. Picking a favorite is hard but i really loved Double Delight which I gave away and hope to make again someday. I have not purchased any if the 100 blocks volumes yet so it would be great to win one......thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on being in the 100 blocks Vol 8. Beautiful block and fun to see your quilts made with this block too. Inspirational.

I've been quilting for just over a year now. I hate to waste anything so I've started saving my scraps in usable sizes, and I just love making crumb blocks from the tiniest pieces. Thank you for your inspiration and guidance.
ReplyDeleteCongrats for Volume 8! Really look forward to these wonderful collections. I have several of your quilts in progress and a growing collection of bonus triangles and strings. I 'de-boned' dress shirts when my husband passed and the fabrics are background/base for celtic knots on a quilt for our son, The buttons made great Christmas ornaments ~ used on styrofoam balls with beads~ son's 2012 Christmas.
ReplyDeletestill saving scraps! can't seem to accumulate them fast enough. have a goodly stack for your scrappy round the world, though; maybe enough to start. love all the greens the 'scrap crystals!'
ReplyDeleteMy first and so far only (but definitely not my last!) of your quilts is Boxy Stars, which is only a top, but is soon to be my first attempt at machine quilting. I have a few Sister's Choice blocks on my design wall, as well as a few split nine patches, and I'm looking forward to Celtic Solstice.
ReplyDeleteSince 2009 I have taken classes to learn different techniques. I have yet to finish any of those quilts. After retiring June 2012, I ran across your website, blog. Wasn't too long before you mentioned a mystery quilt. Well, since I had never made a whole quilt, I decided to give it a try. I don't have a stash of scraps, I have a lot of fat quarters, some from when I took my very first class back 30 years ago. I didn't have any of the colors for the mystery and it was so late my starting I only managed to get a few of each color. It is a lot of work to make a scrappy quilt look scrappy if you only have a few pieces, but I worked at it and proud to say my first completed top was a Bonnie Hunter Easy Street. I want to make all your quilts! Thank you so much for helping me relax and enjoy quilting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chances to win! I LOVE Scrap Crystals--you just keep making beautiful quilts! I've made Playing with Jacks in browns and blues, now I'm starting Scrappy Mountains. So many Bonnie quilts, so little time!
ReplyDeleteLove the theme and colors for the upcoming Celtic Mystery
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the first clue... I hope I will be able to keep up!
Thanks for the inspiration and instructions!
Bonnie, I had the pleasure of finally meeting you and taking one of your classes at Williamsburg VA. I chose "Winston Ways" and I have so far made 15 blocks so I'm half way there. You are such a wonderful fun person to learn new techniques that are down to earth and easy. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteBonnie, I'd love to be in the draw! I recently finished a boxy stars quilt and am itching to get started on Celtic Solstice as I am from Ireland! Perhaps I couod work on this new block to keep active!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great use for bonus triangles! I've been saving mine, as per your instructions, but haven't used many yet ... looks like I may find a way in your new book!! In the meantime I would love to be included in the draw for a copy of the 100 blocks. Thanks Bonnie :)
ReplyDeleteI love this block! What an amazing use of bonus triangles. I would love to explore that and many other blocks in the book.
ReplyDeleteAnother great give away! Thanks Bonnie. I've made Orka Bay, Jamestown Landing, Scrappy Mountains Majesty and Scrappy Trip around the world. I've loved sewing these beautiful patterns gifts from you. Thanks so much and I'd love to win a copy of 100 blocks.

ReplyDeleteBonnie, you never fail to impress with your quilts. Where do all the ideas come from? This year I'm not working on your Mystery, but of course I'm saving all the posts - you never know I still might do it. Love your site and all the information you share - thank you for the chance of winning a fab book.
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie, your block is looking great (as usual)!
ReplyDeleteI have 2 WIP's based on your patterns: Scrappy Mountain Majesties (needs borders) and Easy Street. I was hoping to have finished Easy Street by now (= finished the top), but due to moving from the Netherlands to Sweden, it is still in pieces. I did finish all the clues, I only have to sew it together. I'm still debating if I'm going to participate in this years mystery, I think I'll decide when I see the first clue.
I'm on the Bonnie trail...have been making all your mystery quilts and many more. I love, love, love scrappy. I've made other quilts from your books also. I think my absolute favorite is Blue Ridge Beauty. Anxious to try the bonus triangle thing and lots to look at in this morning's blog. YEAH

I have made a Scrappy Trip, huge Scrappy Bargello, Mountain Majesties, Zuckerwatte (a 2013 Christmas Gift for my DIL) and I am in the process of Pfeffernusse (renamed Herbstfarben because of the colors I used) They are all beautiful. You have also given my a different eye when looking at quilt block patterns....I want to design a two block scrappy quilt of my own. Thank You, Bonnie!

ReplyDeleteLove the new block! I am planning to make Celtic Solstice - it will be my first mystery quilt with you - can't wait to get started! Thanks for a chance to win the new magazine!
ReplyDeleteIf you live in a safe, comfy home in a country without wars/explode bombs ... GIVE THANKS FOR THE VETERAN'S OF YOUR MILITARY WHO HAVE MADE YOU SAFE TODAY.
ReplyDeleteIn the USA, it is Veteran's Day to honor all those who have serve, and especially those who have given their lives that we might live.
Thank you all

Love the "Crystal Star" blocks' Looking forward to another book and knocking out what I can on Celtic Solstice during winter break. Oh come on let's just keep CHRISTMAS break people! I hope & pray your brother is doing well.
ReplyDeleteI made your scrappy around the world quilt and I love it and the technique!
ReplyDeleteI have made your Pinwheels and Patches quilt. Loved using all my scraps and the fantastic motion of the quilt with your creative layout is magical!! You da best!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the Scrappy Bargello I made in 2000--it has 2000 squares.
ReplyDeleteAs a former Marine Captain, I salute all veterans and the great people I had the honor to serve with.
I have made many of your quilts; the one I seem to made most often is Bricks and Stepping Stones. It is a good way to use up my 3.5 inch strips. I also love how it showcases the fabric, each one looks so different by using different fabric. It is a great leader and ender project, in fact I have one going right now using only black tone-on-tones for the bricks. Thank you for your great patterns!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quilt is always the one I'm working on. But my real favorite is Roll, Roll Cotton Boll. Can't wait for the new book. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I first found Quilt Cam, you were working on a Sister's Choice quilt. I pulled a lot of greens and creams and made a version of that quilt lickety-split! It went together faster than any quilt I have ever made, even though it looks like I spent years on it, LOL!

I have made several of your quilt patterns. I am working on a weed wacker right now but my favorite pattern is the Scrappy Pineapple Blossom. They always turn out beautiful. It looks hard but it is super easy. Thanks for teaching us so much. Meg

ReplyDeleteYour quilts are beautiful and I am really looking forward to the mystery quilt! Thanks for a chance at another give away. Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteHI Bonnie! I love your blog and read every day. I recently finished my first quilt using your pattern "Jared Takes a Wife" and I am totally hooked. I learned how to put sashing on using the instructions on your blog. I learned about fabric values here, and I have gathered almost all of the materials for the mystery quilt and can't wait to get started! Thanks for having so much information available on your blog and for making it so easy to understand. I have never been one to sew, but you made me believe that I could do it. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've made many of your quilts from scraps, but this year I bought a bunch of shirts and made Goose in the Puddle. It turned out great! This quilt convinced me to go out and get more shirts to make more quilts. I like Goose in the Puddle pattern because it is simple enough to complete in a short period of time, but it is never boring to sew.
ReplyDeleteSo far my favorite is Easy Street because that;s the only one I've finished so far. I hope to change that with Celtic Solstice and complete Smith Mountain Morning. So many cool quilts and not enough time! Love this Crystal block.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all you do! I am busy busy on my split 9 patch leader ender! Can't keep up with you lady!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't made any of your quilts yet. I do love the 100 block books I have been able to find. I only have 3, been having difficulty finding more. Nice to see some available here. A friend introduced me to you page and I love all the things you share. Would love to win the new one. :-)
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Bonnie. I would love to have the "100 Blocks", but if I don't win it I'll just keep making your patterns into quilts. So far I have made the Scrappy Trips (in truly all scrappy colors) and the String X (in scrappy pieces for the string part and red and yellow in the rest). Currently I am working on split 9-patch blocks as leaders and ender while I am working on a Burgoyne Surrounded in scrappy browns with unbleached muslin for the background. You may think it is boring, but it is just what my son requested. I almost forgot that I have made 12 Boxy Stars just on a whim. I'll put them together someday. The fabrics for Celtic Solstice are ready in my sewing room. I have gathered enough so that both my mother and I can each make the quilt. Love your Scrap Crystals quilt and love greens and blues together! I made a quilt called Hidden Wells in blues and greens. Love it!
ReplyDeleteHi bonnie I am new to your techniques but have tried the new leader ended challenge for this year. Love the results of my 5blocks. Have collected my fabrics for Celtic solstice mystery . Thanks again for the chance to win the block CD

Hi Bonnie, I have made a few of your quilts and the one thing I love about them is that you challenge me. I am out of my comfort zone so many times with your quilts and have learned so much from you. I appreciate all you do and look forward to the upcoming mystery quilt.
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie. Thank for the chamce to win! Since I found you, nearly all the quilts I make (and most of the UFO's) are your patterns. I have all your books and have done 3 yearly mysteries and 2 magazine mysteries. They allow me to make complex quilts I wouldn't otherwise make if they weren't broken down into steps. I so appreciate your generosity in giving away free patterns. My favorite so far has been RRCB because it was my first of your quilts and I won a my first ribbon ever for it. In progress are Orca Bay, Sister's Choice, Scrappy Trips, Cheddar Bowties and Strippy 4-patches on Dots. This new crystlas quilt is also stunning and I can't wait to make it!
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie. I have started but not finished yet several of your quilts and love your patterns. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI have also been collecting these magazines and just purchased 2 of the patterns for my EQ7. Would love to win volume 8. thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing this Mystery Quilt. Thanks for the chance to win!!
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite quilt of yours is whatever pattern which I have just finished. I have done four and my most current completed is Boxy Stars and I have started Scrappy Mountain Majesties. I love getting the bonus triangles .. I have collected quite a few because I also completed a Sisters Choice quilt top. My first mystery quilt will be your upcoming one .. Have set aside my scraps already. Thanks for sharing your knowledge so freely. Cathy
