This was my view for most of the day today.
Can you see the autumn colors outside my window?
I’m still driven to get this done ASAP for Mark ---and I chose a simple quilting pattern, a panto called Check and Chase by Hermione Agee of Lorien Quilting, Australia.
I wanted something kind of curvy and free flowing to go with such straight, jagged piecing. Something still spiky and pokey, but with some swirl to it.
This fit the bill just fine!
I used the thinnest cotton batting I have on hand, being as the quilt is being shipped to Arizona. I ended up using Hobbs heirloom without scrim.
Quilting in progress!
Quilting done and trimmed! Ready for binding!
Close up of quilting detail. Is this perfect, or what?
My trees still have some leaves, but they are falling quickly!
Next up is adding a label into the corner, and getting the binding sewn on.
I do plan to hand stitch this binding. I know several said to just sew it down by machine, but every hand stitch is a thought, a wish, and a prayer – I can’t skimp on those. Besides, it will be nice to sit tonight and work on a binding with my feet up. That’s about as relaxed as I get around here.
If you are new here – welcome! The free pattern for this quilt is found under the free patterns tab at the top of the blog….scroll down to S for Scrappy Mountain Majesties. If you find yourself a need to sew fast and furious – this is the quilt for you!
Wow, you are cruisin'! Perfect all around, Bonnie. I applaud you! It looks so nice draped over your rail with the trees as a backdrop, but it will look just as good in Arizona!
ReplyDeleteit looks great and you moved so fast with it! this quilt is next on my list it is such a neat quilt.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! The quilt looks glorious on your veranda railing mimicking the colors of the trees and sky. I agree totally about hand sewing the binding. Beside the meditative nature of the task, I have yet to see one sewn by machine - even if neatly and carefully done - that is near the match for a hand sewn binding.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful! I know he will enjoy it. Chem rooms tend to be on the cool side from my experience so soft and cuddly will be wonderful even in Arizona. I needed that in south central Texas. I love that pattern. The stitches in the binding being hugs and prayers is a very important part of comfort quilts both for the maker and recipient. Hugs for you heart and prayers for you both
ReplyDeleteMy prayers and hugs are with you...
ReplyDeleteYou been smokin'. The quilt is turning out great. I envy you your autumn colors...the trees here are covered with snow now. So many still had their leaves on and it's really weighing them down.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful and stitched with so much love! Your brother is going to love it!
ReplyDeleteBonnie, what an amazing job you've done with this quilt! i love the quilting as much as i love the fabrics and quilting pattern chosen. I'm applauding your efforts to finish with a hand sewn binding. i do all my quilts that way because it adds something of me to each quilt that comes under my hands. I like to think that my prayers and blessings go on and on to whomever receives and sleeps under my quilts for as long as they are used.
ReplyDeleteOh this is gorgeous! Make one for me too while your at it! ;-)
ReplyDeleteBonnie, the quilt is amazing. I can feel the love oozing out of it through the computer screen. Your brother will love it. {{{{{{{{Bonnie}}}}}}}}
ReplyDeleteLooks perfect! Thanks for our visit today...remember what I said! Important!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'll be thinking of you while you are sitting and stitching that binding closed. what a worthy labour of love. This is a beautiful quilt Bonnie
ReplyDeleteBonnie you ALWAYS teach me something... today it is cut before sewing on the binding... I was taught to sew on the binding to the front... cut... then hand sew to the back... I always have to resew areas ... by cutting first makes for more accurate seams :) Thanks! More prayers to your brother as well! Kathi
ReplyDeleteYes :) I like to be sure my edges are straight and my corners are square before I sew binding on :)
Delete"... every hand stitch is a thought, a wish, and a prayer." I hope you stitch a little heart somewhere, for all the love that you have for Mark. Sending healing thoughts winging their way from Oz. This is beautiful.

ReplyDeleteVery nice. I like that you enjoy hand stitching the binding with thought and prayer. I do the same when I am not rushed. Some projects just deserve that. :)

ReplyDeleteBreath taking quilt!!! It will keep him warm and thinking of your during his recovery. My thought and well wishes are with you and your family.. Take all the me time your need...
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful. A group of girls (old girls class of '78) :) made a quilt for a friend who is battling cancer. We prayed over it and gave it to her for comfort as she receives treatments. Sending a prayer your brother's way. We also made two additional quilts that are currently traveling the country a "Lady's" and a "Men's" quilt being sent from class member to class member with journals. We hope at a future class reunion the quilts will appear. So far they have been from NJ to CA and many states in between. The quilts even have their own Facebook page where people post pictures of their time with the quilts. It has been a great project.
ReplyDeleteRelish the time you are relaxing sewing on the binding...you have had a very stressful several days. Know that your quilt will be on the way to your brother and you will have given him a special gift that no one else can do like you.
ReplyDeleteJust perfect and so full of love and care.
ReplyDeleteIt's absolutely beautiful and such a thoughtful gift for one who's ill. I'm sure he will love it. I've done this quilt pattern (from your site) as a baby quilt and really liked how it came out in the soft colors, but the colors you used seem so fitting-and perfect for a man.
ReplyDeleteIt radiates LOVE! Even though you made it fast, He's going to enjoy this for YEARS!
ReplyDeleteBreathtaking, Bonnie. He will love it! Perfect way to use your energy while you are feeling stressed. I agree you will feel good about hand stitching the binding.
ReplyDeleteGLORIOUOSLY GORGEOUS quilt. Mark will love this one because her sister made it just for him. Nothing says I love you like a quilt does.
ReplyDeleteSmiles, JulieinTN
I love the quilting pattern, it looks like wind swirling in the mountain range. I'm praying for your brother and all of you. God bless you all.
ReplyDeletePERFECT in every way!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTruly beautiful! With that thinner batting it will drape nicely and feel like an old friend from the get-go. Mark will love it and it will be just what he needs to snuggle under for a nap or just relaxing. Hand stitching the binding will be just what you need this evening and each stitch will indeed be a prayer and energy sent his way.
ReplyDeleteSafe and trouble free travels on Thursday!

Beautiful, perfect quilt. I agree with you...sewing the binding on hand gives you time to sit, enjoy the quilt, reflect and pray for the person receiving it. It's my favorite part of the quilt making process.
DeleteI am using this pattern for a small quilt for a recent widow, using the sleeves from her hubby's western shirts, as well as teddy bears for her girls and all her grands. I have 14 bears to make before Christmas and I want the quilt done by then too. I thought a quilt from the sleeves would let her continue to feel her loves arms around her for a long time. I am using her favorite color, lavender and purple, for the background, but sleeves from all 12 3X shirts!! Praying for your brother and all of your family. God Bless.
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteBonnie this is a beautiful quilt with the mountains and the quilted wind between them your brother will love it. I hope this process has helped you during this time too! Know that we are all thinking of you during this stressful time. Hugs from Aust. Look after yourself, Julie
ReplyDeleteIt turned out Awesome Bonnie! Thank you for sharing a little of your quilting process, it was insightful for those of us without a long arm machine. Our prayers are with you and your family at this scary and trying time. Remember to think only positive thoughts.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful job Bonnie! Our prayers are with you as you get it finished and send it on it's way!
ReplyDeletewow, that is just an amazing quilt, so very beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat is a very manly man quilt. The photo you took of it trailing over the deck railing is truly fit for framing. Sending good thoughts to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteYou should be sooooo proud of yourself, Bonnie. The quilt is simply fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteThis Quilt turned out so very wonderful! I know your brother will treasure it and the good thoughts it will bring always. The quilting is awesome ! I think you should take a break from pleasing all of us Bonnie followers and concentrate on you and yours. I think we all understand these feelings. Sending you lots of hugs to help . have a safe trip back to Texas and keep your chin up! We have your back girlfriend....
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tip to use a curvy quilt design on a pattern with points. Perfect and thanks Bonnie. I will keep that in mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm new to this neighborhood, but having visited Arizona in November and December, you can definitely get icicles on the pumpkins if you live in the right places. I bought a sweater at Thanksgiving in Phoenix on my honeymoon, and Flagstaff is the snowiest place in the country! I heard of Type A personalities, but I think you must be an AAA!
ReplyDeleteThis turned out fantabulous! Your love and prayers are reflected in every aspect of this quilt.
ReplyDeleteWow! That was super fast!
ReplyDeleteFabulous quilt Ms Bonnie! What healing will come from the work of your hands.....Your brother is a blessing to be sure.....as you are! {{Hugs}} add a stitch and a prayer from me....
ReplyDeleteThis is so amazing. I am so inspired by your talent and how you use it to comfort and celebrate your family. It is the vey best of what a quilter can do. The love he will feel is better than any blue ribbon (not that it isn't every bit worth one). Prayers to your brother and his family. Take care.

ReplyDeletedo not speak English, but I can say beautiful patchwork :D
ReplyDeleteThe quilt for your brother is perfect! The backing really goes with the top and the quilting is definitely what the top was destined for. Yes, I agree that you should stitch the binding by hand since each stitch is a thought, a wish, and a prayer. I always told my sons that when I quilted their quilts, each stitch was a kiss and a hug. Those quilts speak of our love for the ones they are made for. Prayers for your brother and the entire family.
ReplyDeleteI did this recently in aquas, turquoises, and tropical colors for a comfort quilt for a friend with cancer. It does go together quickly!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, Bonnie! I love the quilting...it's just says "hugs"! I know your brother will love and cherish it. I can't believe you put that together so quickly. Great job and thanks for showing us it can be done! Have a peaceful day!

Your needles must be smokin'! I too love the quilt pattern you chose to put on the mountains. I always stitch my binding by hand for the very reasons you said and in addition to that, it also brings me great comfort. I like to call it, the icing on the cake. Quilt on, my friend! ((((Hugs))))

ReplyDeleteLovely, lovely. Stitching it by hand as you lift up prayers for your brother will allow you to be in the space he will occupy when he gets the quilt-underneath the love and prayers put into it! prayers for you and Mark going up from here.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! I love the color combinations in this. Your brother is going to love it very much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a handsome looking quilt. I am sure your brother will feel all the love and prayers that went into it. Our family was in a similar position lasting the last year up to now. Count on your family and friends for support. It is quite evident that quilting community is thinking of and praying for your brother.
