Quilting Stars

Last night after dinner I loaded the "Stars" quilt top that I made with the blocks that were sent to me from stashbuster friends when I graduated from massage therapy school. I finished the top a couple weeks ago.

I wanted to quilt something "cosmos" like over it......The feeling of a universe, a milky way, something...I was NOT in the mood to freehand anything. My brain wasn't feeling that creative. I looked through everything I had, not sure how to make up my mind, holding up each pattern over the quilt, will this do? will it not? I finally decided on a pattern called "little splash" because it has more motion than just "swirly".

It is looking so fun against these various blocks! Because this top was made by a gazillion different people with different tastes in fabrics, it has EVERYTHING from little heart prints to metallics, to batiks, etc. Something needs to pull this all together! I'm using a light blue thread because it travelled the best between whites/cream on creams/ light blues/dark blues without screaming out "too much contrast" between either dark or light fabrics.

I hope to finish quilting it today, get the binding machined on, so I can do the hand stitching tonight. I'm counting down the days until my new chairs arrive! I want to go to Target/Home Depot/Lowes etc...and see if I can find a graphic looking throw rug for the floor to further warm up the room, which of course means I'll need new curtains, and that rose border at the top of the yellow walls is going to HAVE to go! My dilemma is....it doesn't seem to want to peel away from the wall easily. (It was here when we bought the house) and I need to be careful enough not to damage the paint, and I will probably have to scout around (along with scouting for the rug) for a funkier border to cover up what I have removed....

  1. lovely photos of your quilting! :c) I am so glad I sent in a block even if it was a small one - b/c after all you are "Our Shinning Star!"

about the stubbern wall paper - my friend and her husband were just doing this last week, getting ready to move to a new home that needs a lot of work. She told me that they used Pinesole to remove stubbern wall paper!

I had never heard of this before but she said her dh used a paint roller and soaked it on the walls really good and it made it so easy to remove. Might be worth a try, she said it worked great - and the bonus would be that your walls would be very clean and smell good :C) Good luck. ~Bonnie

  5. That quilt is looking great! Little splash is from Jodi Beamish, right?
About the border-a friend of mine changes hers every couple of years. So instead of gluing them on, she staples them into place. When she wants a new look, she just uses a staple remover and voila! Then she staples the new one. She keeps the old ones in case she wants to go back to them, knowing that the store probably wouldn't have any more of what she liked.
So, there's an idea for after you get this old stuff off or even staple the new one over it.
    Hope it helps.

  6. I'll leave my comment here for the last three posts so I can downsize too!

The quilts all look fantastic! You really do run circles around us all! I love how the borders work for those quilts and the words are so fun to read! The quilting worked very well to tie all the colors together and get the movement of the quilt...good job choosing!

Finally congrats on getting one cabinet cleaned out and out of the room. That's a huge accomplishment because I have a cabinet liek that and I know how much I have stuffed inside of it...there's tons in just one of those. SO think of how much fabric you were able to use up in great quilts! Job done very well!

  7. This quilt will just be gorgeous!!!!
I wish I had the time(and patience)to work on my machine quilting skills, because every time I see your work, I want to go and do just the same. My earlier attempts shows that that will not happen, at least not within reasonable time.

    Thank you for the inspiration.

  9. Wonderful quilting Bonnie, I'm always so impressed by what you do. I'll look forward to seeing how you go with the wallpaper border, I have to remove one from Amy's room, she's no longer a 'fairy' girl.

  10. The star quilt looks great... you really did a wonderful job in putting all the blocks together into a harmonious whole.

And congrats on trimming down your stash and getting rid of a cabinet! What ever happened to the place where you used to have it... where the baseboard was pulling away from the floor? Did it come back into place when you moved the fabric?

  11. I endeed up getting a steamer from Lowes to get the border off in my kitchen. The builder had put it up and didn't put enought primer on the wall first so it was really hard to get off. I tried all the "chemicals" and other tips but in the end the hot steam did the best job and no damage.

The quilt looks wonderful of course!
