Glimpses -

Yesterday - 3pm on the back porch.

I'll never turn down an invitation when it includes sunshine and afternoon warmth (Well, it's November at about 60 degrees, but I'll take it!) and charcuterie!

When did we start using such a boujee term like charcuterie? (or boujee for that matter?!)

In my old age I would simply call this lovely spread "Veggie Tray with Cold Cuts & Cheese."  LOL

But it was a wonderful snack - the company could not be beat, and we even included Flat Karen who couldn't be with us this week -

We miss you Karen - but we know you are sewing along at home!

An encouraging discussion on hand quilting encouraged Barb to bring out here woolie applique currently in the quilting process "since forever."  It's LOVELY!

This impromptu share brought out a vintage hexagon quilt to die for - complete with gumby-green pathways.

The piecing is perfect and the quilting is intense with a 3-line starburst being quilted inside each hexagon.  Wonderful texture and a treasure.

Barb finished her Pine Tree Point!

And right on time as Christmas Tree harvest season has begun in earnest and we watched truckload after truckload of freshly cut pines being moved up and down the road in front of the inn.

I'm on the look out once again for a "road kill" tree dropped to the side of the road to rescue.  Some years it happens, some it doesn't.

Adding to the festive feel - Jacob's Chain is also growing!

I spy some Straits of Mackinac from String Fling!  These colors just call to me.  So yummy!

Rail fence building in action!

The neutral zig-zags are really going to add a nice diagonal stair climb effect.

Boxy Bow Ties on the design wall!

I love seeing blocks in other people's scraps.  It's so much fun to recognize some fabrics, and find others that are completely new to me.

More progress has been made on Silk Path!

I know it's a lot of work to make all of those strip panels - pressing them in the direction given will have all the seams nesting throughout the whole block for sharp intersections where square meats square.

The variety in the fabrics is key - the more, the merrier!

As for me- this happened!

I only got as far as loading it and quilting the first row - because 3pm on the porch happened!

And then I advanced the quilt to find.....

The same fabric touching itself!  OH NO! LOL!

It stays.  I don't care.  It happens.  Fabric cut apart works really hard to put itself back together again.

Good thing it's a neutral - as a background it's not as noticeable to anyone other than a quilter.

And from 6 feet away?  It won't shout out.

Alternative for Tri Recs

So - you know how quickly I blew out of 100 sets of Tri Recs? Yep.  That surprised me.

I went back to my distributor - they are all sold out.

As soon as I put out the Indigo Way Mystery info all of the shops went to the distributors and ordered up all of the tools.  I'm not kidding.

So I searched high and low to find an alternative.  The Marti Michell Peaky & Spike ruler set will do the same thing.

I've got a limited number in stock. As soon as the shops who are without rulers find out they can use this too they will likely take all that the distributor has.

It's a good thing - bad thing!

But don't worry - I'll be providing paper-piecing templates for the units that use this ruler for those who don't have them when we get to that stage of the mystery.

So breathe.  Relax.  It will be okay.

And if all else fails, see if your quilty friend has a set you can borrow.

I want to thank everyone for diving in to Silk Path with me!

There are going to be wonderful quilts happening over the winter as you make this project!

Silk Path is easily constructed from strip-sewn panels: Sliced, mixed and matched, rearranged and sewn back together! No triangles required.

Introductory Special: I have placed Silk Path at 25 % off in both the digital pattern section of the Quiltville Store and in the Quiltville Etsy Pattern Shop

Full color photos, step-by-step instructions included.

Quilt Size: 84’’ X 84’’

Sale price good through 11/15/23.  Hurry now and save - no coupon needed!

And yes - I'll be drawing for 2 winners who will each receive a Silk Path PDF pattern from me, and a Facets of Brown Color Roll from Cotton to Quilts.

Enter to win on the Gift-Away Post!

The folks at Cotton To Quilts have sold out on these rolls every time they put more in the store.  They are also cutting as fast as they can for rolls in our Indigo Way Mystery.

This is a small shop in Louisville, Kentucky who is just celebrating their one year anniversary.

We are a rather large global quilting community and have descended upon them like locusts. That can be a good thing and a bad thing.

Let's show some support and cut them some slack if things are currently out, and check back often to see if more has been added.

Today - high of 60.  I've got a group that wants to go up to the Appalachian Trail in search of ponies so we'll do that at the warmest part of the day, mid afternoon.

Other than that - it's going to be all about getting Star of Hope quilted and the binding on.

How about you?

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Vintage Sunbonnet Sue quilt found in North Carolina.

It is entirely possible to do all three things at once.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

  1. With your 'fabric touching itself' photo - I looked and looked at it, and couldn't spot which fabric you meant for the longest time. I was so focused on the blues that it took me forever to notice it was a neutral. It's really not obvious. Never be noticed on a galloping horse, as they say.

That quilt is looking so beautiful - very delicate, with all of the neutral and light blue, and little sparkles of dark blue. Lovely, and a lovely tribute.

Peaky and Spike!! Oh I loved Doreen Speckmann. She was SO hilarious. Quilters' own stand up comedian. And she lived life with joy. Her book was (is) great too. She died too soon. --But she died dancing!

    1. So happy I got to hear her speak several times, what a hoot! So glad I was not on that cruise when she died dancing, what a heartbreaking shock to all.

  6. As an Oregonian, your comment about hoping to find a "road kill" Christmas tree cracked me up.
Good one Bonnie! You all enjoy your hike up to see the pony's.

  7. It might be the same fabric but with the stripes going in different directions . . . . . .. When I was growing up we would drive the roads for potatoes as we had a potato farmer around the corner. He finally fixed his hole in the wagon.

Lovely inspiration from all the retreaters' projects! I've got 3 more promised quilts to get quilted and bound, then I'll have to choose my next piecing project. Toss up between Bonnie's Jacob's Ladder variation (PDF stored on my computer in readiness) and "Silk Path", only I'll be doing both eventually in blues + creams. Somehow Blues seem to reproduce like bunnies in my stash. Everyone seems to know there has never been a blue I have not liked, lol. Another place to look for triangle in a square type rulers is Kaye England's Facebook shop if you can't get one from Bonnie or your local quilt shop.

We just call those trays "nibblys" although that does sound a little like cat food lol. I got my tri-recs set off Amazon for $25, they had 3 left.
Next time I looked, they were up to around $36..... this is Australian dollars. Can't wait to start. Have a nice break Bonnie, you certainly deserve it 😊

We had a friend who called my efforts at a meat and cheese platter, "ham on a board," and the name stuck. Delicious by any name. Beautiful quilts as usual Bonnie. Stephani in N. TX
