Slowly, ever slowly, the hoop makes its way toward the center of the quilt -
My Amishy Baskets project hasn't been getting as much stitching time with the long daylight hours of the summer months, but it is still progressing.
I had some questions about it - so here she is.
I might sit in front of the TV for one episode of "something" per night - usually settling in around 8:30 pm or so. And depending on the course of the day, I may be feeling too obliterated to put on a thimble and stitch.
But last night - I turned a corner!
I went all the way from where you see the hoop to the far left where I am now beginning to move up the next side.
Corner turns happen as a "fill in whatever needs to be filled in" kind of way. So here you can see that fill in bit of the gap between the last fan of the row I just completed and the top o the side I am now moving on to.
And the 3 small arcs that begin the next row of fans on top of those.
Again - I'm not marking these. I'm just eyeballing and going with it.
There are variations. There are wobbles and uneven-ness.
It all adds character!
The area left to quilt gets smaller with each side I complete working in a spiral toward the center where fans will just end when I run out of room.
And because I worked from the outside in, the quilt is already trimmed and bound and it will be ready for hanging because the hanging sleeve is already on there too.
Hand quilting projects take a long time - true. But I love having something to hand stitch in the evenings. I'll have to come up with something for this winter to take its place.
If even just for the fact that Lola loves to settle on to the place where I put my quilt in the hoop next to my recliner.

She really doesn't care if there are strangers or not. She has come to accept that quilters are kind folks who will provide loads of pets and scratches and treats. Life is good!

I was honored to be presented the most awesome hostess gift basket - full of cheeses, summer sausages and other yummies. We will be spoiled for quite some time to come!
Not to mention that the basket itself is wonderful - I love rustic baskets and this will likely find a repurpose for holding some goodies somewhere.
There is more creativity happening as we move into the weekend.

Ah yes, the tumblers. I have several strips sewn together. That was from the year i was at retreat in Eatonville, WA with you. Wow time flies! Has been about 10 years. Just need to get them into a flimsy now, light a fire under me and get a little MOJO going. Start my day with your blog. Thank you for all you do. Yesterday's trip to the Tent Makers of Cairo was truly awesome. What memories for you and those on the tour. Just amazing.

ReplyDeleteYou look really cool with this skirt. I know it is because of the knee, but maybe you'll wear more skirts? I personally love wearing skirts and dresses and having my legs less enclosed. Makes me fee cooler.
ReplyDeleteLove the unstudied but neat look of your quilting in the Amish-y Baskets. Way softer look and way more cuddly quilt results with the hand stitching. Machine stitching gets the job done well enough, and is so much faster for the majority of quilt finishes, but so nice to hand quilt a to-you-special project. Not thrilled with this year's leader/ender as it does not mesh well with the way most of my scrap bits are atm. Instead I'm making red + cream 4-patches and Blue + cream HSTs for my version of your "Jacob's Chain". Got it as soon as I saw it was published! Hurrah for creativity.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the perfectly timed update. I decided to hand quilt my Hummingbird Memory quilt while waiting for my mother to gain her wings. She was my inspiration to sew when I was 8 years old. I chose the Baptist fan pattern and finished the first border around the outside edge while at her bedside. 💔♥️
