And When There's No Internet

There was a power blip Thursday evening - kind of late, nearly toward bedtime.

It had blipped at home enough to kick the generator on for a few minutes, but things went back to normal rather quickly and I didn't think much of it.

The cabin is 7 miles from Quiltville Inn.  I never even stopped to think that they would be affected as well.

Besides - they also have a generator that will automatically kick on if needed.

No problem.  I went to bed.

But in the morning when I arrived I discovered that they'd been without internet since the power blip the night before.

While the inn has a Generac - the internet comes through the phone line at the QPO next door and is beamed to the inn from the modem in the window.

It's a system that works well, until it doesn't!

But you know what?  The quilters are on retreat - who needs wifi??

The quilters kept on sewing!

And after lunch - they headed to town to do some shopping at Quilts On Main in Galax because - while they are in town and have cell reception they can send messages, check their email, post a photo to Facebook and connect all the dots they need.

Those who stayed behind, not needing a quilt shop run, or internet access, kept on sewing!

As for me - without internet my Verizon booster doesn't give me enough cell signal to even text home.

I headed home for my own lunch, and to await the Hubster who was returning from an appointment to let him know he needed to check in with Brightspeed (Which truly isn't very bright!)

Through the chat module on his computer (We use our cell hotspots for internet at home because they can't get us service here up the mountain.) we were able to get them to do a hard reset on our modem.

I headed back over to check if it indeed had reset and was working.

Hooray!  It worked!  Internet was restored at 2pm - while the quilters will still out shopping.

Those who stayed and played still had a great time!  Here is a Playing With Jacks (Free Patterns tab) finish that now just needs binding.  It looks great!

Oh, and see that tiny blue machine?  It's a New Home/Janome and flew all the way from Los Angeles inside luggage!

It weighs nothing.

It has a beautiful straight stitch and a full sized bobbin!

There was some impromptu photo taking over the porch rail!

This is Gail's - not sure on pattern name.

Emily used an Accuquilt die for her Hunter's Star quilt in progress.  I love how the pieces fit together with all of the dog ears pre-trimmed!

Halloween is right around the corner!

That means that some Punkin' Patch blocks from String Frenzy are underway.

I need to start a Halloween quilt.  It's all I can think about!

Gail's corner - her Leader & Ender Bow Tie blocks are coming together!

And those hexies! I love the setting she is working on!

Easy Breezy Leader & Ender finish!

Super fun setting - and all the fabrics are dots!

Eventually the quilters returned from town to show us all the goodies they purchased!

Some headed to the porch to rest up with an afternoon beverage and some snacks from the kitchen -

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Meanwhile in the front yard -

This bush has been out of control for a long time - too long!

It's gotten quite the haircut!

Check out the debris all around!

That looks so much better - Thank you, Hubster!

There are a couple more boxwood bushes to tackle to the right of the front steps - but the rain had started to fall and the one big bush was a big job in itself.

He'll live to tackle the other bushes another day.

As for me?

Between running home to deal with the no internet connection issue, (I couldn't do the work I needed in the QPO without internet either) I kind of gave up on my day and just hung our with the quilters.

And that bush-trimming supervisory position? It can take a lot out of a person. LOL!

It was an "I accomplished nothing!!!" kind of day for me.

But at least the mail order was filled and I was able to print invoices and postage before heading home for the night.

Maybe I just kind of needed an off day?  I think so!

Only a few days left!

  1. The internet is a two egded sword. Gotta have it, but when it's down we still survive. The electricity stayed on? Quilting is my Bliss. Grateful for each one I have made.

Sometimes a day off is just what we need to recharge the battery. Glad you enjoyed it!😁

  3. Yes, a down day is what the doctor calls for sometimes. I had one the other day. That little blue sewing machine was SOOO cute!! Love the inspiration days as well.I can be down the internet, but I still need power, especially here in South Central Texas. Hope you enjoyed the rest, and yes, Halloween will be here before we know it!! ( And hopefully bringing the cooler temperatures!)

  4. The internet is one of those things... it feels essential but can be SO distracting. I usually count internet down days as "snow days" and license to PLAY!
