Colder, With a High Chance of Quilting

This is the view that greets me when I walk through the sliding glass door of my cabin studio, and step into the side yard.

There's no denying it now - winter is on the way.

And the beautiful curtain of yellows and golds is nearly gone now, giving way to mountain ranges  and sun rises.

It's a fair trade off I think!

Nature's palette just can't be beat!

You know those kinds of days where you are running dawn to dusk - and you either forget to stop for photos (To catch the parade of Christmas Tree trailers rumbling up the highway!) or you are too buys doing all of those routine things that you are sure no one wants to hear about that you just don't capture anything?

That was pretty much my day yesterday.

Most of the October Quiltvillians had departed by the time I pulled up around 9:30am.  Laundry was already running - Bless Them!

I had a few hours to empty fridges, work on laundry, set things aright, reload things like soaps, lotions, shampoos, shower sprays, toilet paper and paper hand towels and get the morning mail order out before housekeeper Susan pulled in at noon.

Once the morning rush's check list had all of the boxes ticked - I could rest a bit and settle into this:

Triplet block from my Addicted to Scraps column with Quiltmaker Magazine.

This one is found in the September/October 2021 issue.

I needed something easy to sew, and though there were a bazillion and a half of these, They were easy to feed through the machine as I cut them in pairs with right sides already together.

On my Netflix - Victoria & Abdul.  CHARMING!!  I loved seeing this show. If you haven't seen it, do!  You won't be sorry.

"The relationship between Queen Victoria and her handsome, young Indian attendant Abdul Karim was deemed so controversial and scandalous by her family members that, upon the monarch’s death in 1901, they scrubbed his existence from royal history.

According to The Telegraph, Victoria’s son Edward immediately demanded that any letters between the two found on the royal premises be burned. The family evicted Karim from the home the queen had given him, and deported him back to India.

Victoria’s daughter Beatrice erased all reference to Karim in the Queen’s journals—a painstaking endeavor given Victoria’s decade-plus relationship with Karim, whom she considered her closest confidante.

The royal family’s eradication of Karim was so thorough that a full 100 years would pass before an eagle-eyed journalist noticed a strange clue left in Victoria’s summer home—and her consequential investigation led to the discovery of Victoria’s relationship with Karim." [source]

I sewed and sewed, I pressed and removed dog ears - I matched the sewn pairs right sides together with their mates for my next round of stitching.

Ready for the next seam!

I have spent some time updating the Addicted to Scraps tab at the top of the blog where you will find images of all of my Addicted to Scraps blocks now up to date, with links to click to obtain a copy.

Better yet - subscribe!  You know we've got a mystery in the magazine starting SOON that will run all the way through 2022 that is separate from our Rhododendron Trail mystery that starts here on the blog in just a few weeks.

The Quiltmaker mystery runs in the magazine, and you need to purchase the magazine to make the quilt. I will not be presenting the pattern here on the blog, but I will be sharing my units and blocks!

Rhododendron Trail happens here on the blog, and is free to you until it is retired in February, rewritten, and offered for sale as a PDF pattern in the Quiltville Store.

Celebrating 40 years of Quiltmaker!

Editor and designer Denise Starck has created a beautiful quilt layout using my favorite Addicted to Scraps column blocks in a quilt celebrating this anniversary.

And I am sewing along too! I've got just a bit of a head start, and I can tell you that you are going to want to make this quilt, so SUBSCRIBE!

Optionally, digital copies will be available for each issue as they are published and can be purchased one at a time.

I can't wait to share what I'm making during this mystery.  When Quiltmaker gives me the go ahead to share the blocks, I'll be right on it.

Zoey Jo, giving me the side-eye.

It was a long and busy day - and I was falling into bed at 10pm.

Quiltville Quote of the Day -

Even with my own family I have found it's often better to remain silent for a while instead of joining any debate.

No matter what happens, let’s not lose our respect and our love for one another.

Kindness can change the world.

And with that, I’m turning on my happy music, setting the tone for my day and heading back to cut up more fabric

Have a great Wednesday, everyone!⁣

  1. This blog post just has everything I need today... a wonderful sewing project, remembering the wonderful movie Victoria and Abdul, gorgeous fall scenery, coffee purcolating, Zoey, a fascinating hexie quilt, and an inspiring reminder to be kind (and sometimes silent)!! I'm off to start my day right after a dose of Bonnie :)

  2. Bonnie, I have been looking at the fabric color choices for the new mystery and not feeling them. Today, I looked at the picture at the top of this post and saw my color choices!
Will have to figure out which is which but now I'm excited to try my choices in the mystery.
Thanks for sharing your talents with us.

  3. A college friend once shared with me "it is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt."

  4. Simon and Garfunkel sang it best in the sound of silence. No barking neighborhood dog, I'm grateful for that today. I did re-subscribe to Quiltmaker, just for a year. I t will save me buying it in the Grocery store. Thanks for the Virginia Sunrise.

  5. I l-o-v-e the colors in the new Rhododendron Mystery, oh my, so delicious! And the beautiful pictures of the flowers that influenced it. I just had to reach out to my screen and give Zoey a pet - I feel such joy in seeing her unending antics, what a beautiful, soft look in her eyes as you take her picture!

  6. In our community there are several families who have married into other local families and most of them go to our church. When meeting new members (the ladies) I admonish them if they see any one gossiping about or arguing with someone in our church or community to probably stay out of it, because it is probably a family matter!! LOL "Silence is golden"

  9. Nice post. Wise words.
I'm plugging away on 1/2 sq. Triangles for my quilt & my easy angle ruler!

  11. I love seeing how the view from your side yard changes as the seasons change. The trees where I live (in the UK) are still quite green and have a lot of leaves - only a few have got the beautiful autumn colours.

  12. I watched that Victoria flick on Netflix as well and very much enjoyed it. What a sign of the times that the family tried to erase all memory of something that was so important to her.

  13. To Janie.....I live in NL and I have a current subscription to Quiltmaker with auto renew. Costs me $26/yr but a lot better than the store issues.

  14. Thanks for the tip on the "Victoria and Abdul" movie - there is a book as well and I plan to put it on my library list.
Fall in Ohio has been gorgeous the last few days, but a hard frost on the past 2 nights will have our leaves on the ground and the tree limbs bare very soon. The late fall has produced an interesting incident - we found a monarch caterpillar yesterday! Too bad it won't survive to become a butterfly and migrate...
