Making Webs – and loving the creative mess!
Workshop day 4 in Atascadero in conjunction with the Seven Sisters Quilt Show – String Spider Web!
We had a blast – and everyone got to choose their own block size, drafting their own kite template and deciding how they wanted to set their blocks – be it the traditional version from the free patterns tab, or the Serpentine Web uptake from my book String Frenzy!
My suggestion – gleaned from time I spent in the presence of Gwen Marston herself – “Don’t commit too soon!” Give yourself the opportunity to make blocks – MANY blocks – and then play with them, not deciding what was going to happen until the quilt itself lets you know.
I love how different these look – but from the same webby beginnings!
All the quilters, getting busy with the strings!
This one being made for a granddaughter’s “big girl” bed!
And this one being made on a machine purchased in 1971!
This one drafted in a smaller size -
With narrower kites!
Chery’s lovely neutrals with solid red! Yowza!
They look so much better after trimming!
I love the trimming part best -
Ooooh – HALLOWEEN! SO CUTE!
We really had a lovely day – and you can share in it all by watching our video below. Click to Play:
Last night was the perfect evening to drive on down to Morro Bay for a bite of dinner along the water, and to catch the sunset -
Morro Rock through the windshield.
MASSIVE.
We had a ways to go for sunset yet -
You can barely see the cars also lined up at the base of the rock –all of us doing the same thing. Waiting for that big ball to drop beyond the horizon.
As temps dropped – the fog started rolling in -
Pretty soon the sun was dropping behind fog, not into the water. But I did catch this in beautiful golden light –
So funny – watch to the end – my video is being photo-bombed!

And there she goes:
The end of another beautiful day!
We discussed today’s very busy and very full Straits of Mackinac workshop while waiting in the drive up line at A&W for root beer floats.
It’s going to be a crazy madhouse of creativity – and a great way to end this 5 day workshop series. Tomorrow my only job is to enjoy the show, and then I’ll be on my way home early early Sunday morning.
Quiltville Quote of the Day
In the words of Deepak Chopra:
Nothing is more important than reconnecting with your bliss.
Nothing is as rich.
Nothing is more real.
Happy Friday, Everyone!
I love the photo bomb! Couldn’t have been better planned.
