Boating on a warm September Evening in the UP, Michigan?
AWESOME!
When Tammy told me she had twisted Mary’s arm to take us out in her 1947 HackerCraft for a sunset cruise around the area, I was all for it.
There is nothing like the smell of lake water mixed with fuel and oil and exhaust and the revvvvvv of a motor pushing you forward at high speeds!
Okay, not THAT high speed, more like a very relaxed end to a perfect day.
The lake was quiet, “The Season” is over. Boats are being stored away for the winter, and we only crossed wakes with a couple of boats who were out enjoying the evening bliss just like we were.
Let’s GO!!
What a sweet ride!
HackerCraft is the name given to boats built by The Hacker Boat Co., an American company, founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1908 by John Ludwig Hacker (known as John L. Hacker or just "John L."). The company moved operations to New York State in the 1970s and continues to produce hand-built boats in Silver Bay, on the shores of Lake George, New York.
But this 1947 baby was Michigan Made, and has Michigan Stayed!

Tammy, untying the lines!
Our flag is ready to fly!
This beautiful boat was “Brought Back from Death” ((My new favorite phrase from Janet!)) by Mary’s hubby. At one point it was so broken down it actually had a tree growing THROUGH it! What a labor of love and beauty, and oh what a sweet ride!
Let’s Roll, Sister!
Mary at the wheel!
Sunset behind the stern!
Michigan Beauty over the bow!
Evening reflections in the water.
Coming up on one of Mary’s other boats “The Courage!”
Early 1900s Life Boat!
From behind!
This old life boat has had quite the life and now lives on as a summer fishing boat. Mary told us the story of how many women she could pile into this thing all at once – something like 47! They were quite the spectacle motoring around on the water. We call that a party barge!
How would you like THIS for a retreat house?
Good bye, Sun!
The perfect end to a wonderful day!
Hoping to get my Box Kite quilt top together today, leaving time for hand stitching tonight solo! The Hubster will be on his way back tonight for work tomorrow, but I’m staying up here until Tuesday morning for some extended solo retreat time. Got to get these projects DONE!
Have a great Sunday, Everyone!

ReplyDeletean old family friend of my parents had a boat just like that - and they lived on Lake George. I wonder if it was the same "hacker" boat. small world :)
ReplyDeleteNow that would be my ideal end to a perfect day, especially with such a beautiful sunset. Photos are great.

ReplyDeleteSo glad you were in Michigan the weekend of Sept. 27th. After you left, we have had rain and cold. Isn't Michigan the best? You certainly got quite the tour with the Soo ladies - locks, maple syrup, boat trip, Charlevoix. We are so happy that you got to see Pure Michigan!!
ReplyDeleteYoou out did yourself with these pictures of that sunset. Beautiful. I knew how you felt on that ride. Had one last Sunsay on the sound at the Outer Banks.
