Hello, Gretchen! Gift-Away!

Are you ready for some fun and exciting paper piecing?

Are your saved scraps overflowing and out of control?

If so - Hello, Gretchen! just might be the pattern you've been waiting for, the quilt you've been eager to dive in and make.

I was completely obsessed with making this quilt.  It uses EVERYTHING, even those cut-off corners you've saved from doing things like stitch n flip where you put a square on the corner of a base unit, stitch the diagonal to become a corner triangle, and trim the excess.

There is a lot of fabric waste in that excess!  Actually...I consider those to be BONUS triangles because there is so much you can do with them.

So many of my favorite scrap quilts start HERE.

The variety is the key to everything.  The more variety the better.  So I am always on the lookout for a quilt idea that will dig into what I've already got at my fingertips.

The scraps from everything else.

These little units have only 3 seams.

(So happy yo find a place for these racoons!)

Units are made in mirror image -

Half with colored corners, half with neutral.

They don't look that impressive, but when sewn together and multiplied:

Can you see it happening now?

Even the cows and pirates cot into the game!

And the secondary designs jump when when blocks are set together.

The biggest hint I can give for this block construction is to remind everyone that pins are your friend.

There is a lot of pin matching of points.  I use a 2 pin system to match things well.  Use the first pin to go straight through the two points. Just leave it skewered there.  Grab a second pin and pin with an in-and-out motion just above the skewering pin.

Remove the skewer (or anchor) pin leaving the second pin in place and move on to the next place to be pinned, repeating. Skewer first, then pin. It stops the fabric from shifting with the in-and-out motion.

Are those scrap bins any lighter?

I don't think so.

But they have to be, right?

I got this far with the center. But it just didn't look finished, so I set in to figure out borders.

And this is where these little ditties came into my life and kind of took over!

Hello, Gretchen! was quilted with baby pink thread in an edge-to-edge design called Nemish's Feather Grande by Bethann Nemish.

And didn't you just know that the binding would HAVE to be purple?

It just finishes the edge of the quilt just right.

And also looks great against the super scrappy use-it-all backing!

Yes, I even used a test block (in the wrong size) on the back because what else was I going to do with it?

What would I work on today? Pineapple Crazy! 6 blocks made, 218 to go. Scraps are everywhere, so I've got to sew this mess down.

I skipped a bag making class today due to heavy rain here in central Texas. I'm staying home and playing with my new Sweet 16! But first, I must clear up some space. Wish me luck!

  5. I love this review of Hello Gretchen, how it comes together -- and we all love a secondary design, don't we??

Let's see, if I had three hours at the machine...I'd catch up on my temperature quilt. But this is a good reminder that even with three MINUTES I can at least move it forward! Thanks for your near-daily posts, they're such good company for morning coffee. <3
