From Up Top to the Coast!

Our day trip around Christchurch New Zealand continued - this time by bus to get us a bit out of the main parts of the city and up to higher elevation where we could look at things from above.

I'd live here in a heartbeat!

There are walking trails, and gorgeous views -

Also - a clarification on yesterday's post. Details were misremembered, if that is a word.

We enjoyed learning some of the history of The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora site, formerly used by Canterbury College (now the University of Canterbury), and Christchurch Boys’ and Christchurch Girls’ High Schools. There are 23 buildings on site, of which 22 are listed by Heritage New Zealand with 21 categorized as Historic Place Category One. It was still marvelous, and I think understandable that I got the name of the place wrong.

Our guide telling us about native plants.

And from up top - Click to Play:

What a beautiful panoramic view!

Beautiful Christchurch!

From here it was a windy drive down to the shore.

Beautiful succulents!

Rocks and Caves and -

Xenia, Adventure Girl!

Shore! YAY!

Houses on the hillside reminded me of California.

There's a ship out there!

It was a bit overcast, but not really cold.

There was still time for ice cream!

Birds and ship and rocks and gentle crashing of the waves.

New Zealand, you are marvelous!

Quilting happened on Valentine's Day!

I'll have to look up the name of this once I get back to the studio - it's Swirl N' Hearts by Crystal Smythe. I thought this one was perfect for this quilt.

I finished the quilting!

But this is as far as I got as the B.A.D. Quilters (Bound and Determined!) are in the house -

There was much hustle and bustle of moving all the things from cars to the porch, moving cars so next cars could get up the drive to the unloading zone, and the bringing it all into the house.

I'm anxious to get over there this morning to see everyone settled in and sewing.

As for me, I'll be trimming this quilt and getting the binding/label on.

How about your Thursday?

  2. New Zealand is one of my favorite places. I visited there several years ago, but would love to go back for a longer time...like maybe a month. There is so much to see. And such great people!

  3. Amazing photos from your recent travels! This looks like such a beautiful place, thank you so much for sharing it all. I love to see all of your pictures and imagine which place or photos will inspire your next mystery quilt:) It was super fun to see a friend's name listed in your quilting design you used. I had Crystal's son in elementary school as a student, and that was many moons ago. Thank you for always sharing the process start to finish so that we can all also see a path to a complete quilt!

The panoramic view reminds me of the UK. And the houses on the hill remind me of Port Wen on Doc Martin. Beautiful places. I’m practicing on my relatively new long arm so I’m not afraid to quilt my nearly completed Indigo Way. Still haven’t got up the nerve to quilt last year’s Chilhowie. Fran in Pa.

  5. Thank you for taking us along on your travels, even if it's only vicariously. My Thursday was spent getting groceries and looking for discounted Valentine plush to put away for donation to Toys For Tots later this year. Love the pattern choice for your most recent quilt. Best to you.

Thank you for sharing your memories of NZ travels with us.
I am so pleased your trip was well before the fires on the Port Hills again, east of Christchurch towards the coast, with loss to homes and people again.
The Colleges remind me of England, especially those tiled floors.
I so enjoy reading your blog and quilting tips. The pets must have appreciated your return home.
