Sometimes I get so focused on what is going on in my own corner of the world - I forget that folks are busy doing AMAZING quilty things in their own areas!
I received the following email from Petra in Victoria, South Australia sharing what she and her quilty mates have been up to!
Hi Bonnie from Victoria, Australia!
Each year at our annual Latrobe Valley Quilters Rawson retreat ( this was our Covid delayed 19th) , we encourage the retreaters to make a specific block which will then be made into donation quilts.
This year I got to chose the block... so.. I chose your String-X block !
Rather than have to make mega printouts.. so that the ladies knew where to find the directions for future use, I just made one in a folder ... then a "follow me" board.
A few of us supplied pre cut strips from our scrap bins... and the setting triangles are from a donated bolt of fabric.
Many blocks were made by some of the 65 attendees..and more were taken home to complete.
I / we thank you for your generosity and for sharing your knowledge.
Kind regards
Petra
This was such a happy mail to open! and isn't that green ombre setting fabric just the bomb?
If you haven't checked out String X yet - it's a favorite from the Free Patterns tab at the top of the blog.
The process is SUPER simple - and we all know we have an abundance of strips, strings, and small pieces at hand. Have you made one yet?
What is stopping you?
More string fun from Dawn!
Dawn and her hubby stopped by on their way to nearby Oak Hill Academy to visit her old alma mater and she brought some quilts to share!
I tell you - it is such a small world. She grew up in Virginia, and went to little Oak Hill "back in the day" and when she said "Only one of the staff who was there when I was a student is still there..." And I knew just who she was talking about!
"RHONDA!" I said!
"YES! You know her? She was my cheer leading coach!"
You have to understand how small Mouth of Wilson is - so this connection is just so wonderful. And to think that Dawn had been past Quiltville Inn when it was still in the hands of the original Fields family more than 20 years ago.
Dawn took up quilting a few years back and there is no stopping her. She used the Basket Weave Strings tutorial from the Free Patterns tab, enlarging the blocks and using this gorgeous cheddar gold to frame it. WONDEERFUL!
Going to School at Oak Hill meant that she also had to make Grassy Creek!
Guess who is firmly addicted to string piecing??
Dawn and her hubby (Such a patient guy while we talked and talked about all things quilting!) are staying in an Air B&B just across the NC state line and will head home to Massachusetts and home when their stay is over.
I'm so glad they made a stop!
In other news:
This thing is pumping out plenty of ice, but I found out quickly that the ice is WET. (No duh, right?) so it clumps together if you just put it in the freezer from here.
However, if I lay out out on a cookie sheet in the freezer and let it harden for about 30 minutes, it's then safe to bag it up without it becoming one big clump.
We are learning as we go. There is plenty of ice on hand for the Muddy Creek Misfits who began to arrive yesterday afternoon!
They must have brought the sunshine with them because the morning was cold and the drizzle continued until about 3pm. And then - TADA! Sunshine!
Temps aren't all that warm - in fact it was 37 this morning. Bbrrrrrr...but we should be 60s and sunshine this afternoon.
And really? We'll be inside sewing so does it matter? We really DO hope to get out for a walk or two.
And we will spend the next few days encouraging that big and beautiful rhododendron to BLOOM off the front porch.
Today I'm putting the finishing touches on BASKET TOSS!
Pull out those scraps and let's make baskets!
The printable PDF pattern for Basket Toss makes its debut in the digital pattern section of the Quiltville Store TOMORROW and we will be kicking it off with an introductory sale price AND a Gift-Away you won't want to miss!
How about your own Thursday ahead? How are things shaping up for you today?
Your blog is the first thing I read everyday. I love the little inspiration messages. I an now addicted to scrappy quilts. My first leader and ender four patches project is finished. My nine year old granddaughter helped sew many of the patches together. This quilt is going to her teacher. Thanks for all the lauhs and tears and wonderful instruction for even more quilts!

How wonderful to be able to visit with Dawn. What a treat.
ReplyDeleteLove this Ombre green fabric. It really made that quilt sparkle. Those tiny baskets: I would use the bonus triangles.
